Living in Southern California, I have many New Year’s memories centered around the Rose Parade – going to it, my daughters helping decorate the floats, watching one of the local floats being built every day on my drive to work between Christmas and New Year’s…but a memory that really stands out was the first year they had the B2 stealth bomber fly over the parade. Not only did they do practice runs at tree top level in the long, wide arroyo behind my day job a few days before….. on the day of the Parade, they flew directly over my house (at a higher altitude). VERY exciting and thrilling.

Merys stood carefully in one spot. She pushed her hair
out of her eyes roughly and sighed in frustration,
checking her neck one more time, not quite accepting
the loss of her necklace. The slithering sensation
against her skin as the old leather thong parted and the
amulet fell had been so startling, she had not grabbed
for it in time. Peering uselessly into the murk of the
Nile, Merys blinked back tears. The only possession of
my great-grandmother’s I had left, the symbol of my
being a priestess—gone. I’ll wait for the silt to settle
and then hopefully I can find it.
