We Have to Help Him Weekend Writing Warriors

Sharing now from my newest scifi romance Mateer (A Badari Warriors SciFi Romance Novel): Sectors New Allies Series Book 2. Yup, a mouthful LOL!

I’ve moved ahead again. The alien scientist in charge, Lampergg, has ordered the humans taken outside. Mateer, who has been undergoing torture in a separate area, is brought to join them for the first time, but has passed out from the severe treatment. Harker is a blow hard human prisoner with whom Megan, who’s a medical doctor, has already had one run-in. Punctuation a bit wonky to meet our rules – sorry! Slight differences from the published version, to fit the rules here.

The excerpt: 

“We’re setting you free for a while,” Lampergg said, making an expansive gesture toward the horizon, “Fourteen days to be exact. I expect you to explore the area, show us how capable you humans are of surviving in the wilderness, and get acclimated to the planet.” He grinned, “See if there are any holes in our perimeter – I’ve heard it said your species is quite clever. You will take him with you during this experiment,” the scientist said next, pointing at the injured prisoner, who lay unmoving.

Harker shook his head and objected loudly, “Man’s literally dead weight. We’re not going to carry him – Why should we? He’s nothing to us.”

“I’ll have him executed right now where he lies if you don’t.” In response to a signal from the scientist, a guard stepped to the invalid and rested the lethal tip of his pulse rifle against the man’s skull. Raising his bushy yellow eyebrows and running his gaze over the assembled people, Lampergg said, “What manner of beings are you humans?”

Outraged, Megan confronted Harker, “We can’t leave him here to be killed in cold blood – we have to try to help him.”

He’s also been ordered by his leaders to search for Megan and save her life at all costs. Tortured by the enemy, he’s offered one chance at survival – convince Megan to become his mate and assist the Khagrish with further experiments.

As the situation at the lab grows worse, Megan struggles against her deep attraction to Mateer, while she does her best to shield the other humans from the terrible Khagrish experiments. For his part, Mateer knows she really is his fated mate and despairs of being able to keep her safe, as the rebel attack is delayed and she fights the truth of their bond.

Will they be able to work together to defeat Khagrish plans and preserve human lives until the promised rescue happens? And what of their future together – will Megan accept Mateer as her true mate, or walk away if she’s freed?

7 Items I Can’t Live Without

Depositphotos_18988089_l-2015 sevenI was reading People magazine at breakfast and there was an article with “7 Products Kate Hudson Can’t Live Without.” Now since she’s an A list, jet setting actress, her choices ran toward Diptyque candles and La Mer skin crème (well, to be fair, also it was an article in the beauty section). But it started me thinking – welcome to author brain, folks – what would be the seven items I’d pick that I “can’t live without”? Of course if the zombie apocalypse hits tomorrow, I’ll exist without some of these and others I’ll scrounge from the ruins of countless stores as I wander with my fellow band of hardy survivors….WAIT, do I sound too much like a character from any version of ‘The Walking Dead’ or ‘World War Z’?

I promise to compose a new list should the End of the World As We Know It happen, but for now, here’s my set of choices, in no special order:

The microwave

My cell phone – well, duh.

My Kindle (all those books on my TBR, the shows to binge watch, the movies I haven’t gotten to yet!)

The electric toothbrush/floss/those tiny interdental brushes. (OK more than one item but it’s a category.)

Coumadin (AKA warfarin) because I do have a heart condition and am more prone to stroke-causing clots than most people would be.

A sweater, any sweater – I’m always chilly and am almost never seen without a cozy sweater, usually black, sometimes brown, gray or dark blue. Pockets preferred. I like to wrap up in it. Cozy is a big thing for me. I really should try writing a cozy mystery while wearing my cozy sweater…

Reading glasses!!! I’m blind as the proverbial bat without them and I probably wouldn’t even see the apocalypse in front of me if I don’t have those at my side. The other items would also tend to be useless without the glasses on. I could be taking Coumadin or vitamin C or Sweetarts for all I’d know. I’ll always remember the horror in the apocalyptic book Alas, Babylon when the bad guys break the doctor’s one pair of glasses. NO!!!!! (Thank you, author Pat Frank, for more or less clearing up that loose end at the book’s closing.)

I didn’t include my laptop but yeah, without it I can’t write my novels very well (or blog posts like this one), so that’s an eighth item for sure.

Jake the Cat was only mollified about not being included when I explained to him he wasn’t an ‘item’.

I decided my car was too big to be on the list, plus it ‘lives’ outdoors.

VS Note: So I debating whether to add this one because of a dearth of reviews on most of this new-to-me author’s books, and I went to the Look Inside feature.  When I realized I was reading on and on, drawn into the world building, wanting to know what would happen next…ok, onto this week’s NR report it went LOL. It’s on my TBR, no idea if I’d like the entire plot, etc., but the sample was intriguing.

It was supposed to be an easy assignment. Retrieve one lone human from the first realm and bring him back to the Council for questioning. Nothing too complicated for Amberstone to handle. Even though this particular human was his sister’s lover and the reason she was arrested and about to be executed. Such things do not matter to a Guardian.
What he didn’t expect was to find two second realm fugitives, both of whom were believed to be dead, alive and living with the humans. And that was only the beginning of his problems.

Sharing now from my newly released scifi romance Mateer (A Badari Warriors SciFi Romance Novel): Sectors New Allies Series Book 2. Yup, a mouthful LOL!

I’ve jumped ahead again.  Still in the cell, a day or two later. The evil alien scientist Dr. Lampergg has unexpectedly sent a new group of prisoners to join the humans already imprisoned with Megan. The newcomers are quite ill from the way they’ve been released from stasis. Harker is a blow hard human prisoner with whom Megan, who’s a medical doctor, has already had one run-in. Punctuation a bit wonky to meet our rules – sorry!

The excerpt: 

Megan moved, helping another man limp with her toward the center of the room,“I need supplies to treat these people,” she said over her shoulder to the guard, “Please.”

“Dr. Lampergg has sent you an allotment,” The guard gestured and a robo drifted into view, carrying a container Megan hoped was full of the promised medical necessities.

Harker stepped forward, “I’m in charge here, and I’ll take those.”

Mouth open in disbelief, Megan glared at him, “Those are for the people suffering.”

“Might be more useful for those of us who are already recovered,” he said, “Give us extra energy and calories lacking in the junk they’re feeding us. Besides, some of the sick are too far gone anyway.”

Anger burned through her body in a sheet of fire, “And giving them the right energy bar might save them – who the seven hells do you think you are?”

Walt interposed himself, “Lampergg sent the supplies to Megan and he’s the guy in charge – am I right?” he asked the disinterested guard.

“I’m to give them to the one you’ve named as being a doctor,” the Khagrish said, “What you do with the bars after I leave isn’t my concern. I will tell you Dr. Lampergg doesn’t react well to his orders being disregarded.”

Megan Garrison, a doctor at the Sectors Amarcae 7 colony, goes to sleep one night as usual only to wake up in her nightgown, strapped to a table in an alien lab, destined to be the subject of terrifying experiments. He’s also been ordered by his leaders to search for Megan and save her life at all costs. Tortured by the enemy, he’s offered one chance at survival – convince Megan to become his mate and assist the Khagrish with further experiments.

As the situation at the lab grows worse, Megan struggles against her deep attraction to Mateer, while she does her best to shield the other humans from the terrible Khagrish experiments. For his part, Mateer knows she really is his fated mate and despairs of being able to keep her safe, as the rebel attack is delayed and she fights the truth of their bond.

Will they be able to work together to defeat Khagrish plans and preserve human lives until the promised rescue happens? And what of their future together – will Megan accept Mateer as her true mate, or walk away if she’s freed?

Who To Trust? Weekend Writing Warriors

Sharing now from my newly released scifi romance Mateer (A Badari Warriors SciFi Romance Novel): Sectors New Allies Series Book 2. Yup, a mouthful LOL!

I’ve jumped ahead again.  Megan and the other humans are taken to a large bunkroom-style cell and left alone. As they all eat, she ponders which people she can trust – some seem too willing to help their captors if it will get them better treatment. Walt, a man unknown to her, seems like a good guy, however. Punctuation a bit wonky to meet our rules – sorry!

The excerpt: 

Megan lingered at the table after dinner, treating raw scrapes one of the women had gotten on her wrists while restrained.

Walt walked up, a box in his hand, “We have first aid type stuff, figured you ought to have it, doc.”

“How can you tell what an alien first aid kit looks like?” The prize was revealed to be a standard—if cheap, low end—Sectors first aid kit, taken from a freighter perhaps. “Better than nothing,” she said with a smile, “I hope I’m not required to remove anyone’s appendix while we’re here.”

Walt sat down, “I wonder how many other humans have been through this place.” He took in the spartan furnishings and the drearily painted walls and floor, “The room appears unused, like most of this facility we saw on the way over here  but the existence of the prisoner we encountered earlier implies there are problems in their system, escapees maybe.” Raising one eyebrow, Walt leaned close, “Did he really speak gibberish to you?”

Megan stammered, “It was—um, he said—”

Walt patted her hand, “Never mind. I like your discretion.”

mateerThe Blurb:

Megan Garrison, a doctor at the Sectors Amarcae 7 colony, goes to sleep one night as usual only to wake up in her nightgown, strapped to a table in an alien lab, destined to be the subject of terrifying experiments. Granted a brief reprieve, Megan and the other kidnapped humans are released in the middle of a forestlike enclosure on this unknown world and told to survive as best they can for now.

Her only hope is Mateer, the genetically engineered alien warrior imprisoned with the humans. He knows more than he’s sharing about this planet, their captors and the fate of other humans, including perhaps her own sisters. Turns out everyone from her colony has been kidnapped by the Khagrish, a ruthless race of alien scientists. Working for enemies of the human-led Sectors, the Khagrish have created the Badari to be super soldiers.

Mateer, a tough Badari enforcer, now a rebel, is captured while infiltrating the lab to help his pack bring it down. He’s also been ordered by his leaders to search for Megan and save her life at all costs. Tortured by the enemy, he’s offered one chance at survival – convince Megan to become his mate and assist the Khagrish with further experiments.

As the situation at the lab grows worse, Megan struggles against her deep attraction to Mateer, while she does her best to shield the other humans from the terrible Khagrish experiments. For his part, Mateer knows she really is his fated mate and despairs of being able to keep her safe, as the rebel attack is delayed and she fights the truth of their bond.

Will they be able to work together to defeat Khagrish plans and preserve human lives until the promised rescue happens? And what of their future together – will Megan accept Mateer as her true mate, or walk away if she’s freed?

I’ve jumped ahead again to right after the moment when Mateer and Megan first met, as prisoners in the Khagrish lab, and he said her sister’s name. I’ve skipped a bit where he tried to escape, was paralyzed by the guards ands taken away. Punctuation a bit wonky to meet our rules – sorry!

The excerpt: 

The guard who’d struck her earlier grabbed Megan by the shoulder, “What did the Badari say to you?”

“The who? The wounded man?” She shook her head, “I don’t know—nonsense syllables – maybe his own language?”

The guard stared at her for a moment longer before releasing her with a shove. Gesturing to the entire group with his weapon, he said, “Move out, prisoners – I don’t have all night to waste escorting you to your new home.”

As they walked, Megan’s head whirled with speculation about the prisoner she’d seen and how or when he’d met Lily. Was his knowledge of her twin a good thing or a bad thing? Megan wished she could have a chance to talk to him. Even wounded and in the obvious grip of battle rage, he’d been compelling, his astonished expression when he looked at her intriguing…but she’d probably never see him again, not in this chamber of horrors.

VS Note: From February. Normally I wouldn’t list a book with only one two-star review but that reviewer seemed to focus largely on a discussion of opinion re Cthulhu and Lovecraft mythos etc., with a few comments on the book itself. I looked at the “Look Inside” sample and the prose flowed pretty well, so here it is. As always, sample and decide for yourself! I have not read this book. I did express to the author that I would include the book in this week’s post but with basically this note and she was fine with that.

When Father Michel Emeric and Dr. Ray Benson warn young widow Kate Jacobs of occult danger stalking her, she dismisses them as deranged fanatics. The eerie disappearance of her four-year-old daughter, Sara, changes her mind. Ray and Father Mike rescue Kate’s child, but the fight has only begun. Dark powers from beyond our world want to destroy Kate and Sara and prevent the birth of a future child foretold to have extraordinary psychic powers and a destiny as a great warrior against evil.
