Wednesday New Releases in SciFi and Fantasy Romance for August 31

descendedI have not read most of the new releases listed (although I always end up one-clicking a bunch as I prepare these posts LOL) and as always I recommend sampling before you buy!

I put them in the order in which they come to me from authors or I find them myself in the previous week, so it’s a mix of the genres…(usually giving priority to the books brought to my attention by the authors.) Also the term “new” is generally plus or minus a week or two. And I catch up on ones I missed in recent months.

(NOTE: If the author provides me with buy links I insert those; otherwise I default to Amazon.)

Also, I usually include only the beginning of the book blurb…

Killjoys Cast Quick Interviews

killjoysDuring the second season of ‘Killjoys’, I’ve been fortunate enough to interview some of the actors who portray key supporting characters for my SciFi Encounters column at USA Today Happily Ever After. With the season finale this week, I thought it might be fun to collect the interviews in one place for you, so here they are, reblogged – Pree, Alvis, Fancy and Lucy! (With permission from USAT/HEA.)

No spoilers but cool to hear from the actors!

Unfortunately I didn’t get  chance to connect with Khlyen, Bellus or Pawter.

(I also interviewed Michelle Lovretta, the amazing creator and showrunner, at length before the season began, which can be found here on USAT/HEA, as well as Part I of my notes from a group interview last week with Aaron Ashmore (Johnny) and Luke MacFarlane (D’avin), which are with my episode recap here. For my Archive with links to all the episode recaps and more, go here.)

Have added their twitter handles since the #killjoys cast actively tweets

PreeThom Allison – Pree           @ThomAllison

Veronica: What are the good, bad and fabulous about working on a science fiction show?

Thom: GOOD: The fan base is huge for the genre and they are sooo committed. When they like you, they really like you.  Our fans have embraced us so warmly, it’s been a little overwhelming.

BAD: The need to be original is crucial because there seems to be so much good Sci-Fi out there.

FABULOUS: My wardrobe and make-up. I mean, come on. Our designer Trysha Bakker gets to go to town on Pree’s looks.

Veronica: I must totally agree about the wardrobe!  What was your favorite scene (either season) and why?

Thom: The scene at the gambling table with Aaron Ashmore in Eulogy in S2 Ep1. When we had our fake lovers’ quarrel, we could barely get through it. Everyone was laughing and in such an extra great mood that day.

Veronica:  That scene in the casino was hilarious for sure and it really felt organic to the two characters, as if they just decided WTH and took off with the spat, escalating the insults, which of course is a testament to the skill of the acting, in my  opinion. And when Johnny dissed Pree’s mother and all the bad guys were so horrified – quite the fun moment.  As an actor, what is your favorite aspect of the character you play?

Thom: I love that Pree is so forthcoming yet he still has so many secrets. Having a secret is great fun as an actor. I can lay in nuances that will pay off later, even if a secret hasn’t been written yet. I also love that Pree is so sassy. He has the greatest lines which is a gift.

Veronica: Great lines, great delivery! Since we’re primarily a book blog, what book or books are currently on your To Be Read list?

Thom: Been given Andrea Martin’s Lady Parts. Love her and looking forward to reading it.

You can learn more about Thom Allison and his projects at the Internet Movie Database  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1047709

Tamsen McDonough_blueT_large_DLTamsen McDonough – Lucy         @redTamsen

Veronica: What are the good, bad and fabulous about working on a science fiction show?

Tamsen: Good: the endless and unpredictable creativity of characters, situations, plots, creatures, etc, etc.

Bad: waiting to see all the SPFX

Fabulous: two words. THE FANS

Veronica:  What was your favorite scene and why?

Tamsen: Veronica, as you’ve had a preview of all the episodes in Season 2, you know that there are some exciting scenes coming up that will be really fun for the viewers!

Veronica: Fair enough, no future spoilers, but in this episode I personally loved the Lucy-Johnny kiss and the fireworks she set off! As an actor, what is your favorite aspect of the character you play?

Tamsen: I just love playing ‘Lucy’ the Killjoys’ AI spaceship as, not only is it an amazing challenge to play a non-human character, she’s sassy, loyal and unapologetic about her like and dislike of various characters.  I’m also convinced she desperately wants to be human, so her dreams and insecurities are really fun nuances to play.

Veronica:  Since we’re primarily a book blog, what book or books are currently on your To Be Read list?

Tamsen: Actually, just a few days ago, I was forcing my love of Christopher Moore novels (especially Lamb) and  The Princess Bride by William Goldman onto a friend, and he retaliated by suggesting The Martian and Fight Club. Otherwise, American on Purpose by Craig Ferguson and piles of other comedic biographies are at the top of my list… The Life and Loves of a He Devil by Graham Norton and Yes, Please by Amy Poehler were my most recent reads and now I’m completely hooked on comedic bios.

alvisMorgan Kelly – Alvis the Scarback Monk       @Morgansam

I’ve been fascinated by the character of Alvis the monk since the first season and recently had the chance to interview actor Morgan Kelly who portrays this multi-faceted man.

Veronica: What are the good, bad and fabulous about working on a science fiction show?

Morgan: That’s a tough question. There’s a lot to love about being on a science fiction show. The incredible sets, the space-gadgets and weapons etc but for me personally, one of the best things about Alvis is his costumes.  I get to wear a cape.  For work.  All of Alvis’ costumes are hand made by the incredible costume department so every single piece of clothing is made with love….I guess wearing a cape to work probably falls into the “fabulous” category.

Veronica: No argument about the cape! What was your favorite scene (either season) and why?

Morgan: I have a couple favorite scenes.  As an actor I’m all about the “connection”.  Sure it’s fun doing fight scenes and running through the sewers but I really enjoy the one-on-one scenes where there is some sort of emotional connection.  The scene in ep. 3 season 2 where Dutch is hallucinating from the mossipedes and Alvis has to pull her out comes to mind.  That being said, I also really liked the scene in season 1 ep 08 where Alvis runs through the acid rain to save John.  That was badass.

Veronica: Both of those scenes you mentioned are favorites of mine but I particularly remember the run through the black rain as a jaw dropping moment for me as the viewer – it was GREAT. Badass indeed 🙂  That whole season one episode was thought provoking, for what it showed us about Alvis…. As an actor, what is your favorite aspect of the character you play?

Morgan: My favorite thing about Alvis is that he is this dark, brooding character with the weight of the world on his shoulders but he also has a wry sense of humor that has been a lot of fun to play.  What I appreciate about the show so much is that there aren’t any two dimensional characters, everyone has a clear motive and point of view which is all an actor can really ask for.

Veronica: Since we’re primarily a book blog, what book or books are currently on your To Be Read list?

Morgan: I’m actually reading two books at the moment.  A couple years back my sister gave me East of Eden by John Steinbeck and it changed everything for me.  I’ve systematically been going through all his books and right now I’m at Sweet Thursday.  I am also a HUGE fantasy fan.  My library is probably 95% fantasy right now.  The other book I am reading is Fool’s Quest by Robin Hobb.  I’ve been reading her books for over 20 years now and think she’s great.

You find out more about Morgan Kelly and his projects on the Internet Movie Database at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1225457/

Fancy_LeeSean Baek – Fancy Lee        @SeanBaekTO

Veronica: What are the good, bad and fabulous about working on a science fiction show?

Sean:

  • The good: I think that story-telling is one tradition, perhaps the longest tradition in human history, that every race, culture, creed, faith/religion, etc., shares. So, it is good to be a part of telling a story that is set in such a unique science fiction world, such as “The Quad” in KILLJOYS, where, really, ANYTHING is possible.  You really get to go along with the creator’s and the writers’ imagination and get to be on the “creative ride” together, which is A LOT of fun.  I’ve always wanted to work on a Sci-Fi show, so playing Fancy Lee in KILLJOYS has truly been a blessing thus far in my career as an actor.
  • The Bad: Honestly, I really can’t think of any! (At the moment, anyway! LOL!)
  • The Fabulous: Being able to work with many different, amazingly talented writers and directors for the show. It’s really fantastic to work with unique visions that enhance the through-line of the show as a whole.  Also, being able to enjoy the experience along with the fans of KILLJOYS – the intelligent, caring, and wonderfully committed fans – is pretty fabulous. Nowadays with social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc.), there are more opportunities to connect with people who are like-minded, globally.  I think that is quite neat – instantly AND closely connecting with people. With this “story-telling,” we all become a part of a community.

Veronica:  What was your favorite scene (either season) and why?

Sean:  I have to say that my favourite scene is from Season 1, Ep. 106 (“One Blood,” written by Annmarie Morais), where my character, Fancy Lee, executes the Level 5 Warrant.  Throughout that episode, I got to show who Fancy Lee was quite a bit more than before. In the final moments of that episode, fulfilling that Level 5 Warrant on a former RAC Agent named Big Joe (I believe Fancy Lee did it for his fellow Killjoy, Dutch, really) and stating, “The warrant is all,” I think, really captured the essence of being a Killjoy, as well as Fancy Lee as a character.  There was honour, respect, care, and commitment in that decisive act of Fancy Lee’s, in my humble opinion.  (Note: Big “sorry” to Tony Nappo – a wonderful, talented actor I know who portrayed Big Joe so well.)

Veronica: I agree, that was the episode where we came to understand a lot more about Fancy than just his amazing skills and expertise.  I really love the character, who intrigued me from the very beginning. I still tend to think of him as similar to the character Paladin from the classic TV show “Have Gun Will Travel” in my own head ….just something about the cool way Fancy operates. High class all the way!  As an actor, what is your favorite aspect of the character you play?

Sean: I really like the mysterious aspect of my character.  In Season 1, Ep. 101 (“Bangarang,” written by Michelle Lovretta), Fancy Lee’s first appearance, for example, is quite mysterious.  There isn’t much expositional introduction; he just appears in a scene, has a brief talk with Dutch.  But, in that short moment, without much exposition, we sense that there is history between those two characters and that Fancy Lee could be “bad news,” depending on who you ask.  Brilliant writing, if you ask me.  Even in Ep. 106 (“One Blood”), where Fancy Lee is featured more, we get a glimpse of what Fancy is capable of, but we don’t necessarily get the “whole picture.”  As a huge fan of mystery myself, I quite like that about my character – we know there’s “more than meets the eye.”  I also love that within Fancy Lee’s badass self lies a tech geek that likes to build and modify gadgets and weapons.

Veronica:  Since we’re primarily a book blog, what book or books are currently on your To Be Read list?

Sean: What We All Long For, written by Dionne Brand, was recently recommended to me by a good friend of mine, so I’m planning on reading that.

** If there’s room in the article – I would love to give a special shout-out to all my KILLJOYS family, starting with our super talented and hard-working creative team helmed by Michelle Lovretta, the producing company, Temple Street Productions, all of our wonderful writers & producers, Space Channel, Syfy, my talented fellow cast mates, and our awesome crew. **

Veronica: Always room to acknowledge the team!

We’ve moved on to Hostage To The Stars, which released in June. Edited from published version. I’ll do a few more snippets from it and then move on to my NEW book, released this week (details below the excerpt).

“You never know with pirates,” said the woman, ill at ease, but not afraid,  “Our line pays the pre-negotiated ransom on the spot, credits transmitted to a bank on New Switzerland. Routine expense of doing business in this part of the Sector.”

She’d arrived at the cafeteria and Sara saw the other passengers clustered at one table in the front of the room.

“You’d better go join them because you can’t sit with the crew,” said the stewardess giving her a not so gentle push, “Good luck.”

Sinking sensation in the pit of her stomach again, Sara grabbed her arm, “Why do I need luck? You said there’s a preset ransom for us. Routine.”

She received a pitying stare now, as the crew woman broke her grip, “For the ship and the crew – you’re on your own. I hope you have good K&R* insurance.”

As Johnny and Sara traverse the barren landscape, heading for an abandoned base where they hope to call Sectors Command for help, they find villages destroyed by battle and stripped of all inhabitants. A lone survivor tells a horrific tale of the Sectors’ alien enemy, the Mawreg, returning after being pushed out …

Searching for evidence to give the military, Johnny is captured. He regains consciousness in a Mawreg cage–with Sara next to him. NEW: Trapped On Talonque SciFi Romance

Trapped on Talonque Final-FJM_High_Res_1800x2700I’m so happy to announce my latest new release Trapped on Talonque (A Sectors SF Romance),  with gorgeous cover by Fiona Jayde!

Lose, and they die, sending a mysterious, alien beauty to an even uglier fate. To survive, these soldiers must win the game and find a way to free the dangerous prisoner from her locked chamber.

She’ll give her aid, but in the end their courage and strength must win the contest.

Space Pirates Arrive Weekend Writing Warriors

Warriors logo revisedHere’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

We’ve moved on to Hostage To The Stars, which released in June. Edited from published version.

“Excuse me,” Sara said, “Was the earlier announcement about pirates on the level?”

The crew member didn’t stop walking but she gave Sarah an odd look, “It’s not a rare occurrence in this quadrant. Unfortunately for us, we were stopped to make minor repairs on the engines in this old bucket and the pirates were out hunting.” She stepped into the gravlift and Sara followed. “I’ve been through this before.”

Sara digested the information as she ascended next to the stewardess. “So what happens next?”

“The pirates are mostly interested in our cargo – probably offloading it now in fact,” Her companion shrugged, “Everything’s insured.”

This incident would make an exciting tidbit to tell people about when she got home. “So the raiders don’t bother the passengers and crew?”

Bad assumption on Sara’s part….more next week!

Hostage ToTheStarsFinal-FJM_High_Res_1800x2700The story:

He rescued her from space pirates … but can he keep them both safe from the far greater evil stalking a deserted planet?

Space travel without Kidnap & Ransom insurance? Not a good idea. University instructor and researcher Sara Bridges can’t afford it, so when pirates board her cruise liner, she’s taken captive along with the mistress of a wealthy man, and brought to a deserted planet. When a military extraction team sent to rescue the mistress refuses to take Sara too, she’s left to the mercies of a retired Special Forces soldier, along as consultant.

Reluctantly reactivated and coerced into signing up for the rescue operation to the planet Farduccir where he once was deployed,  Sgt. Johnny Danver just wants to get the job done. But when the team leader leaves one captured woman behind, he breaks away to rescue her himself.

Death is preferable to what the aliens will do to them… And even if they do escape their captors, can they alert the military in time to prevent another invasion of the Sectors?

Standalone sequel to Mission To Mahjundar (mild spoilers for Mahjundar in this story.)

Veronica Does a Magazine Book Quiz

Entertainment Weekly magazine runs an occasional feature where they ask famous people about books or pop culture in their lives, so I’ve decided to tackle a sampling of their fun questions!

kids booksBook I Loved As A Child: Can’t possibly stick to just one! As a little kid I loved Golden Books. You can see a certain theme in the ones I’ve photographed (yes, I have a handful of books from my childhood, more than I can get into the picture). I also loved Heidi and Swiss Family Robinson.  There was also a very old 1901 book saved from my grandmother’s childhood, Galopoff the Talking Pony by Tudor Jenks, which  I LOVED. Not only did the pony talk (but just to the two girls), the illustrations were gorgeous AND at the end the main character meets the Russian Prince that Galapoff used to belong to, and love ensues. Sigh. When I got older,  Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw became a great favorite, also all the ‘series’ books but especially Trixie Belden…and then of course I discovered science fiction.

What I read in secret as a kid: Nothing really. I was highly encouraged to read everything 004and anything. My mother didn’t approve of comic books so I always felt a bit defiant when I was reading them, but didn’t have to do it in secret.

Book I read to my children: Since we read books together all the time when they were little, it’s hard to narrow it down to just one. We loved anything to do with cats, anything by Jan Brett, with her beautiful illustrations, especially The Wild Christmas Reindeer. Berenstein Bears. Angelina Ballerina. One sort of off the wall choice was this odd book we got at a yard sale, The Giant Jam Sandwich by John Vernon Lord.My late husband especially loved reading this one out loud to the girls, as fast as he could go. The whole thing is one long rhyming poem and at one point in time my entire family (including me) had the entire thing memorized and would shout it out in unison. It starts  “One hot summer in Itching Down, Four million wasps flew into town…”

Book I hated as a student: Anything by Charles Dickens. Ugh. Too long and too dreary for me. Also Moby Dick.

Classic book I tried to read: War and Peace. I always felt that somehow one was required to read that  before leaving the planet but I could NOT get through it. Again, long and dreary.

three musketeersMovie adaptation I loved: The Three Musketeers, pretty much any version, except maybe the one starring Gene Kelly (?!). My favorite is the 1973 version by Richard Lester. Perfection IMHO.

Imaginary place I dream of moving to: (but only on my own terms): Anne McCaffrey’s Pern or Andre Norton’s Witch World.

Genre I’d read if limited to one: Romance obviously!

TrixieFictional friends I’d love to have: I CRAVED to be a member of Trixie Belden’s family and friends. Bob Whites forever! Nowadays, probably Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changelings.

Last novel that made me laugh and last one that made me cry: I’m tough on the laughing bit but Georgette Heyer’s Cotillion and Talisman Ring both crack me up. I cried over one death in Anne McCaffrey’s world of Pern but no spoilers.

My literary crush: Nalini Singh

Character I’d want on my side in the zombie apocalypse: Daryl Dixon of ‘The Walking Dead’, obviously. Hey the show started as a comic book even if Daryl as he is today is really the TV creation and Norman Reedus’s wonderful acting!

Book people might be surprised I read: Burn Down the Night by  M. O’Keefe. I’m not usually into motorcycle gang romance at all, but her main characters really got to me.

Book I’m currently reading: Actually I just went on a little binge of rereading Lisa Marie Rice’s Midnight Man and her other SEAL romances. Before that I read the ARC of Ilona Andrews’ Magic Binds.  But waiting on my kindle is Finn, by Anna Hackett and I’m always hot to read the next Lindsay Buroker Fallen Empire novel. Don’t get me started on scifi romance LOL!

Book I’m eagerly awaiting: Archangel’s Heart by Nalini Singh

Next book from me: Trapped on Talonque, at the formatter now, out in early September! Can’t wait to share…it’s a scifi romance twist on Sleeping Beauty, with a lot of action and adventure of course. Cover reveal and details SOON!

Book I’m currently writing: the long awaited sequel to Wreck of the Nebula Dream, picking up the story for Khevan the D’nvannae Brother, and Twilka, the Socialite. Thank you to everyone who’s been asking for this book since Wreck was released in 2012 and I just hope readers will enjoy the way the story plays out. Nick and Mara do make an appearance. Hoping to get it written and released before the end of 2016, but we’ll see.

THE DREAM QUEST OF VELLITT BOE by Kij Johnson

VS NOTE: I don’t know that there’s any romance in this one, it’s not categorized as one, and it seems very dark, but fascinatingly so…I’m including it just because!

Professor Vellitt Boe teaches at the prestigious Ulthar Women’s College. When one of her dream quest of vellitt boemost gifted students elopes with a dreamer from the waking world, Vellitt must retrieve her.

“Kij Johnson’s haunting novella The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe is both a commentary on a classic H.P. Lovecraft tale and a profound reflection on a woman’s life. Vellitt’s quest to find a former student who may be the only person who can save her community takes her through a world governed by a seemingly arbitrary dream logic in which she occasionally glimpses an underlying but mysterious order, a world ruled by capricious gods and populated by the creatures of dreams and nightmares. Those familiar with Lovecraft’s work will travel through a fantasy landscape infused with Lovecraftian images viewed from another perspective, but even readers unfamiliar with his work will be enthralled by Vellitt’s quest. A remarkable accomplishment that repays rereading.” —Pamela Sargent, winner of the Nebula Award

Guest Author Liza O’Connor THE CRIMELORDS’ WAR

Crimelord book 7 bk final 400x640Veronica: Because I don’t exclusively talk about science fiction and fantasy! Liza is back to introduce her characters and give us an excerpt:

MEET BARNS

Barns is a mixture of high intelligence and petulance. Almost all of his fellow officers at Scotland Yard hold him in contempt. They believe the only reason why Barns received a place and is given the most interesting cases is because he’s related to some big-wig in parliament. (This is all conjecture on their part, but it’s pretty accurate.) Barns is the son of the head of External Affairs, Lord Berringbarn, who has never had a nice word for his worthless son. Fortunately, the Director of Scotland Yard thinks more highly of the young man, so when someone died while attempting to shoot Vic, he sends Barns.

blurb Liza

Chaos abounds in Late Victorian England. Xavier goes off on a mission without Vic because her protector, Tubs, is not well enough to keep Vic from harm right now. In fact, Tubs is dying and the doctor doesn’t expect him to live for more than a week. Upon discovering Tubs’ dire situation, Vic sets about rescuing him instead.

Good thing too. To all appearances the two strongest crime lords of London have declared war on each other. Only the two attempts on Vic’s life tells her this is all a clever plot by a third party—worse yet, a female villainess.

To stop the crime lords from destroying one another, leaving their territories open to the Russian spy, she must bring Seth and Samson together, share what is really going on, and get them to agree to work against this third party. Not an easy task since Seth Sojourn thinks Vic is nothing but a foolish sop. Unfortunately, Xavier has gone missing, so it’s up to her to convince the angry crime lord that her plan is best. Otherwise, this villainess will kill everyone who gets in her way and bring England to its knees.

BarnsThe Excerpt:

Vic peered through the window. “Can I help?”

“No, you are involved in the crime.”

“Barns,” she growled. “I did nothing that was even close to criminal.”

“I didn’t mean it that way. I meant you were the intended victim, thus you cannot participate in the scene evaluation. It could compromise our case against the murderer.”

“The driver is already dead. He doesn’t require prosecution.”

“No…yes, I see your point. But you still may not assist.”

“Why not? I’m quite sure he’s murdered people before. No sane person shoots someone for cursing at their bad driving.”

Barns sighed. “I’m going to need help on this.” He climbed out of the carriage and gripped Vic’s arm. “Let’s go see the crime scene.

Once inside, he smiled at Tubs. “Mr. Tubs, Vic said you were recovering, but this is a grand sight. I could use your help on this if you are willing.”

“I can tell you the dead man’s name, his profession, and who he works for,” Tubs offered.

Barns smiled. “Well, I know his profession, but I would like his name and who he works for.”

“Robbie Conrad, assassin, Sojourn Seth.”

Vic snorted. “No wonder he was such a terrible driver. And see I was right. He has murdered before.”

Barns filled with pride, pulled out his notepad and showed it to Tubs.

Tubs nodded. “You’re learning fast.”

Vic grabbed the notepad and tried to read his scrawl. “Your handwriting is terrible. What does this say?”

“It says ‘Assassination attempt. Failed at accidental carriage death, died during second attempt. Target: Victor Hamilton.”

Knowing what he claimed it said, she was able to make out the words. “Why would Seth want me dead?  Oh… uh oh.” She looked at Tubs. “Do you think he knows about the Tilly disguise?”

“The what?” Barns demanded.

“Nothing to concern you,” Vic said.

“It does if it’s related to this case.”

Tubs gave the matter thought as he rubbed his bald head. “I don’t think the two are related. That’s a very good disguise. This is something else.” He looked to Barns. “I’ll interrogate Vic and then let you know what his motivation might be. In the meantime, you need to let your boss know about this immediately.”

Barns frowned. “I know that. It’s why I was taken away from something important and sent to investigate this instead of some idiot on the force. And trust me, we have a great deal of those.”

Tubs chuckled. “You probably shouldn’t say that out loud, but I’m not arguing with you.”

There she worked for the meanest man on Wall Street, while her psychotic husband tried to kill her three times. (So much for finding nicer people.) Then one day she declared enough, got a better job, divorced her husband, and fell in love with her new life where people behaved nicely. But all those bad behaviors has given her lots of fodder for her humorous books. Please buy these books, because otherwise, she’ll become grumpy and write troubled novels instead.
