Six Sentence Sunday

From a WIP in process short story, set in Ancient Egypt:

“I wish to enlist as a soldier in the army, now, today. “ He swallowed hard and forced the next words out, blushing with embarrassment. “And I need the first month’s pay in advance.”

A ripple of laughter went through the assembled nobles, soldiers and commoners.

Pharaoh quelled the merriment with one upraised hand, leaning forward to study the boy’s face. “You must have some compelling need for such an – unusual request?”

  1. My hubster will like this — he loves ancient Egypt! What a daring request to utter before the Pharaoh! Definitely intrigued as to why he’s enlisting — and asking for money in advance!
