From a WIP in process short story, set in Ancient Egypt:
“I wish to enlist as a soldier in the army, now, today. “ He swallowed hard and forced the next words out, blushing with embarrassment. “And I need the first month’s pay in advance.”
A ripple of laughter went through the assembled nobles, soldiers and commoners.
Pharaoh quelled the merriment with one upraised hand, leaning forward to study the boy’s face. “You must have some compelling need for such an – unusual request?”

My hubster will like this — he loves ancient Egypt! What a daring request to utter before the Pharaoh! Definitely intrigued as to why he’s enlisting — and asking for money in advance!
Thank you for the comments! Glad the snippet intrigued….!
Thanks for the comments! Glad to hear I hit the intriguing part on the mark.
I can’t decide if he’s really really brave or just desperate.
A bit of both actually, you hit the motivation on the head!
Desperate and brave. I admire him for speaking so boldly in front of Pharoah – that takes guts.
Yes, Senebkai is taking quite a gamble but he’s got a powerful motivation. Maybe I’ll put that as next week’s six! Thanks!
Lots of intrigue, which produces lots of questions about why the boy is so determined to enlist and needs money now! Great six.Really enjoying this.
Thank you, glad you’re enjoying this set of snippets. Next week I’ll probably put up his reply to Pharaoh.
Ancient Egypt? I am so there! Unusual requests, and all!
Thank you, I love ancient Egypt as well!
I like it! Embarrassed + bold = brave, and that’s exactly what a hero should be. 🙂
He’s pretty highly motivated, thank you! Appreciated the comment!
I want to know more!
Next week I’m thinking I’ll put the snippet that reveals what’s behind his request. Thank you!
Brave boy, definitely a sympathetic character. Good job.
I really appreciate the compliment! Thank you!
Great writing!
Great six!! I always enjoy your posts!! 🙂
Quite a hero already, bravely declaring in front of pharoah. Great six!
Sounds like a really good story. Can’t wait to read more.
