How Many Oxygen Breathers Weekend Writing Warriors

This week I’ve switched books to WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM,  my “Titanic in space” scifi romance novel. The 111th anniversary of the Titanic on Earth striking the iceberg was the 14th of April.

The excerpt: I’ve jumped ahead a little bit and in the absence of any crew members Nick takes charge of loading a lifeboat. The D’vannae Brother helping him is an assassin/bodyguard serving an alien goddess of flames.

“Quiet down now,” he said, watching the people in the front row of the mob, getting eye contact, to personalize his commands, make them feel like responsible individuals, not a mindless, panicking herd.

The blaring sirens and recorded emergency warnings cut out, resumed briefly and then died away in a slowly fading gibberish. The lights in the corridor flickered, causing gasps here and there in the crowd.

“Are there any SMT officers or crew here?” Nick said.

Desperation, fear, and puzzlement on the faces in front of him. Many sidelong glances, mute head shakes.

Silence.

“All right, then. I’m Captain Jameson, Sectors Special Forces. I’m taking charge of this LB portal. I need four volunteers besides this man,” nodding at the D’nvannae, “to help me keep order here. You can’t all get into this LB. No one’s going to make it off unless you keep your heads and we go about this calmly and quickly.” He pointed at some likely candidates. “You, you, you and you.”

He’d picked out a quartet of fairly good-sized men, who seemed calmer than some of the others ringing him. Pointing at the Brother, he said, “What’s your name?”

“Khevan.”

“Fine, Khevan, you and these four gentlemen form a ring. No one gets by until I say so. Watch my back while I open this damn portal.”

Nodding, the D’nvannae and the four men linked arms and established a perimeter. Nick gave his attention to the locked access. Damn, there should have been at least one SMT crew person at each LB by now, with the unlock code, getting the civilians safely off the ship as fast as possible. Nick spared a second and a small part of his mind to swear at the inefficiencies and lax discipline of this ship’s captain. Lucky for all these nice people I know how to open the thing.

Nick scanned the portal info display as he keyed in a code on the access panel. “Capacity one hundred sentients,” the label declared in Basic and the other five languages. Okay, Jameson, quick, calculate what the limit really means, what the margin of design safety probably was. How many extra oxygen-breathers can I shove onto the thing without killing them all?

As the door cycled open, Nick assessed the waiting throng. The crowd, even larger now, probably in excess of two hundred men, women and children, pressed forward. They were pushing his ring of volunteers closer to him before the men dug in and shoved resolutely back.

“This LB can only support one hundred and twenty-five,” Nick announced to the assembled passengers, pitching his voice to carry to the edge of the crowd. “I’m not allowing one more person to board beyond the limit. I’m taking children and their caretakers first, followed by as many other adults as possible. Anyone with children, come forward now. We’ve got no time to lose. No luggage! No pets!”

WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM

Traveling unexpectedly aboard the luxury liner Nebula Dream on its maiden voyage across the galaxy, Sectors Special Forces Captain Nick Jameson is ready for ten relaxing days, and hoping to forget his last disastrous mission behind enemy lines. He figures he’ll gamble at the casino, take in the shows, maybe even have a shipboard fling with Mara Lyrae, the beautiful but reserved businesswoman he meets.

All his plans vaporize when the ship suffers a wreck of Titanic proportions. Captain and crew abandon ship, leaving the 8000 passengers stranded without enough lifeboats and drifting unarmed in enemy territory. Aided by Mara, Nick must find a way off the doomed ship for himself and several other innocent people before deadly enemy forces reach them or the ship’s malfunctioning engines finish ticking down to self destruction.

But can Nick conquer the demons from his past that tell him he’ll fail these innocent people just as he failed to save his Special Forces team? Will he outpace his own doubts to win this vital race against time?

I’m now taking snippets from  STAR CRUISE STAR SONG.

The excerpt – Addy ignored a message from Ryder in favor of preparing for her first day on the new job. So he came to find her. I’ve jumped ahead during their first dinner date and Addy is trying to draw a representation of how the engines ‘song’ looks.

“I’m not used to eating such rich food.” She sipped her water and for lack of anything else to fill the silence with, picked up the paper and concentrated. Trying to remember exactly what the engines had sounded like in her head, she let her hand drift across the paper and lost herself in the sensation.

Addy had no idea how long she was in the flow but slowly she became aware of Ryder watching her with an awed expression. He reached over and took the paper, studying the whorls and loops she’d drawn, some pressed deep and others fainter, or even dotted. “Amazing,” he said. “And now when I see what you drew, it speaks to me—I start to hear music.” Rotating the page this way and that, he studied her doodle. “I can see how the tune would progress. I don’t have lyrics for it yet but they’ll come. Maybe.” He let the page drift to the table and his mood changed on a dime. “Did you want dessert? Or an after dinner coffee maybe?”

She shook her head. “I hardly made a dent in my dinner. It’s been lovely but you didn’t owe me a meal, especially not here, in the top of the line restaurant. I feel guilty not eating.”

“Don’t worry about it. It was my pleasure. Let’s go for a walk maybe?”

“Sounds good to me.” Addy was curious about the passenger areas of the ship, which was an area she’d probably rarely venture into, since her job was strictly behind the scenes. She reached for the drawing but Ryder beat her to it.

“I’d like to keep this, if I may?” he said.

VS: The hasbeen rock star may have found a new Muse…more to come.

Here’s the official blurb:

Addy Tryndall is a fresh graduate from a highly respected engineering college in the Sectors, on her way to a plum job on the Nebula Zephyr cruise ship. She knows she’ll be on probation but she’s determined to succeed and nothing is going to distract her.

Ryder McRhodes is a has-been interstellar rock star, on his way to reunite with his fellow band members to see if the lightning of mega success will strike twice for them. He isn’t sure he wants to be in the spotlight again and he hasn’t been able to write music since the band broke up.

Addy has secrets. Ryder needs a muse to unblock the creative flow…could her tightly guarded past be the answer  to his problem?  When the two are thrown together in an attempt to avoid the interstellar paparazzi he’s intrigued. She’s wary.

And someone is sabotaging systems on the Nebula Zephyr. Addy unwittingly finds herself in the middle of the situation while juggling her increasing attraction to Ryder and her challenges on the new  job. Can she trust him with her secret? Or will he break her heart?

I’m now taking snippets from  STAR CRUISE STAR SONG.

The excerpt – Addy ignored a message from Ryder in favor of preparing for her first day on the new job. So he came to find her. I’ve jumped ahead and now they’re on their first dinner date.

“So how was the first day on the job?” he asked. “Did the engines meet your expectations?”

“Oh my gosh, yes. They’re magnificent and perfectly in tune too,” she said with enthusiasm. “The energy in those chambers is off the charts.”

“So I know what it means for me to be in tune,” he said with a grin, “But what does it mean for engines?”

Trying to decide whether she could trust him with the truth, Addy decided to take the risk. “The harmonics of all four were synced and meshed and it was like standing in the eye of a hurricane with a symphony going on all around me. I loved it.” Words failed her and she focused on her appetizer.

“Wow, doesn’t sound like a technical term at all. I was expecting a complicated discussion of physics. Now I’m curious—if I went down there, could I hear it?”

She shook her head, sorry she’d mentioned her joy. “No, it’s um not something a person can hear with their ears.”

Head tilted and eyes narrowed, as if he was trying to determine whether she was joking, he  asked, “So how do you hear it then?”

“In my head.”  She swallowed hard. “I can hear the harmonics of most modern technology, especially if I concentrate. I don’t talk about it though because no one understands. Well except my Dad, he has the same ability. He taught me how to control when and where I hear it. He said it’s the star song and only the most blessed of our lineage can tap into it.” Addy smiled, missing her family and a bit embarrassed to be sharing the story. Her father could be whimsical, especially when he’d had a few too many feelgoods.

Ryder was intent, leaning forward over the table. “Truly amazing. What does it sound like?”

“I can’t describe it.” Desperate, she chewed her next bite of hors d’ouevre and considered. “I could draw it for you because it makes a pattern if I close my eyes.”

“Oh yes absolutely because I’m totally intrigued here.” He got the attention of their waiter and when the man came over, asked for a writing instrument and paper. Perplexed, brow furrowed, the server rushed off.

“But it has to be our secret,” Addy said.

The excerpt: Addy ignored a message from Ryder in favor of preparing for her first day on the new job. Jumping ahead, she’s finished the day’s work and is in the employee break room with her assigned mentor, Barbra.

“What’s he doing here?” Barbra said suddenly, rising with a frown. “Passengers aren’t allowed on this level without special permission and certainly not unescorted.”

Addy turned in her seat and saw Ryder standing at the door of the small space. When he smiled she felt warm all over, almost the same happy sensation she’d had in the engine room but for a different reason.

“Here you are,” he said, advancing to their table, ignoring the glances from a few other crew members at a far table.

“Hi,” she said, tongue tied.

Barbra wasn’t so reticent. “Sir, passengers aren’t allowed down here. I’ll need to escort you to the gravlift immediately or else we’ll have to call Security.”

Not at all abashed, he transferred his attention from Addy. With enthusiasm so infectious Barbra blinked and seemed as if she might swoon, he said, “But the Ship told me I could find my friend Addy here. I had the Ship’s permission.”

Seeing her mentor was becoming a little upset and not wanting a scene or any trouble with her new co-workers, Addy rose, tossed the remnants of her midafternoon snack into the recycler and said, “I’ll escort you to the gravlift. She’s right—you’re not in the right place for a passenger.”

“Well you never answered my message so what’s a guy to do?” He stood aside with a grin, allowing her to precede him out of the break room.

I’m now taking snippets from my newly released novel STAR CRUISE STAR SONG.

The excerpt – We’re back to Addy, who is settling into her new quarters on the Nebula Zephyr. Addy is still unaware of Ryder’s identity as a former rock star and thinks he’s just a nice guy she helped get aboard the shuttle to the ship after some trouble at the spaceport.

“You have messages in your queue,” the ship announced unexpectedly.

“Anything I have to deal with? Anything from the Chief?” she asked.

“No. One is the standard welcome to the ship from the captain, one is a reminder of various crew guidelines for general comportment and one is a personal message from passenger Ryder McRhodes.”

Briefly Addy considered listening to the one from Ryder but it was all simply too much. What could he want to say anyway except thanks again? She preferred to keep her encounter with him as a nice memory. “Can you bring up the technical manuals for the engine nacelles?” she asked as she moved to the couch. “I want to go over them again, including any revisions, before my meeting with the Chief tomorrow.”

As the complicated schematics and accompanying text popped into view in the middle of her living room, Maeve said, “The chief doesn’t customarily give new employees a pop quiz on my specifications. Not on the first day anyway.”

Fidgeting from impatience, Addy said, “I want to hit the ground running though.”

Forgive and Forget Weekend Writing Warriors

I’m now taking snippets from my newly released novel STAR CRUISE STAR SONG.

The excerpt – We’re leaving Addy for the moment and getting Ryder’s perspective on his arrival on the Nebula Zephyr.

Ryder closed the portal to his Level A suite behind him and dropped his satchel to the lush carpet. Much more carefully he unslung his guitar case and set it off to the side before venturing further into the lavish accommodations. Although luxurious, the Nebula Zephyr’s top cabin reminded him of every other first class hotel he’d ever stayed at or ship he’d flown on. Nothing like where I’ve been for the last year. Strolling toward the bedroom beyond, he paused at the piano for a moment, clenching his fists. He wasn’t surprised to see the vintage instrument there, since he’d specifically requested one. And the damn candies better be in the dish beside the bed, he thought savagely. He supposed all rock stars since the original days on old Terra itself had had strange requests in their contracts. It was a tradition whose roots were lost in time.

He was pleased at this sign his management team had picked up the old threads smoothly and ensured he was getting the treatment he was used to. “Lords of Space it’d be so easy to slide right back into it all.”

Unable to force himself to step away from the piano, he rolled back the cover over the keys and touched one, without depressing it enough to make the hammer strike the strings and produce sound. “Those days are over,” he said softly as he replaced the cover. “Never to return.”

Now he did proceed to the bedroom and flopped on the bed, staring at the ceiling. What in the seven hells am I doing here? Was he really going to return to the stage and sing and dance the oldies like a washed up has been fool, for presumably ecstatic audiences? Could he forgive and forget what had been done to him by his former best friend? “I haven’t agreed to anything yet.” His declaration was defiant and echoed a bit in the lonely stateroom.

But merely by being here on this ship, flying at hyperspeed toward a reunion he’d sworn would never happen, he was more than halfway to accepting the request.

I’m now taking snippets from my newly released novel STAR CRUISE STAR SONG.

The snippet is from close to the beginning of the book. Pretty much everyone guessed what the next line would be after last week’s snippet – “He’s not my boyfriend” or words to that effect – can’t imagine how you knew that LOL – so I’ve skipped ahead a bit.

Picking up her backpack, she headed toward the landing bay exit and the crew gravlift beyond. Addy loved antigrav and the sensation of flying, so she was keenly anticipating taking the one which ran through the entire vessel. She had no fear of heights or of antigrav and stepped out into the silvery stream with confidence.

At the next level she stumbled off, shaking and sure she was probably white as a sheet. She leaned against the corridor bulkhead. What do I do? Who do I talk to? Fumbling with the chip linking her to the ship and its coms she said, “Ship? Ship? We have a bad situation developing in the main gravlift. Please—”

“There is no report of an incident, Ensign Tryndall,” said the Ship’s deep voice in her ear, making her jump.

“Something’s wrong with the mechanism,” Addy said frantically. “It’s cycling way too fast and it’ll overload in less than an hour. It’s been set to the wrong specs. Please, you have to evaluate it.”

I’m now taking snippets from my newly released novel STAR CRUISE STAR SONG.

The snippet from close to the beginning of the book. Addy is at the spaceport on her way to join her new spaceship, the Nebula Zephyr cruise liner. I’ve jumped ahead a little bit and Addy and Ryder are on the shuttle flying to the cruise ship in orbit above:

Luckily, Ryder seemed determined to carry the conversation. “Where do you work on the ship?”

“The engine room. It’s my first day actually. I recently graduated from the institute and did the online orientation to CLC Lines and now I’m shipping out. I’m an Apprentice and an ensign,” she said proudly, fingering her badge. “The Nebula Zephyr has top of the line engines and I’ve been told there were enhancements made by the ship’s AI to produce even higher cycles so I’m eager to get a peek at the specs and…other stuff.” She’d almost said to listen to them and after years of endless teasing and bullying, she knew better than to mention it. Ryder was so easy to talk to though. “And there are other cutting edge tech features of the ship’s abilities—”

“Sounds like a real opportunity for you then,” he said easily.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I get so excited—I must have been boring you.” Crushed, she shrank in her seat.

“Not at all.” He shook three more of the tangy candies into her hand, holding it steady as he did so. “I can relate to a person’s enthusiasm.”

Fingers tingling from his touch, Addy swallowed the candy without chewing and nearly choked.  Ryder patted her on the back and gave her water from his own bottle and by the time she was restored to normal breathing, they were already approaching the ship. Her attention was riveted on the vids as the shuttle closed in on the majestic interstellar liner. “I’m so lucky,” she said. “Everyone in my class wanted to get this job but I had the highest grade point average by five points.”

Ryder was watching her, not the vids. “I wish I could get as excited about anything as you are about working on this ship.”

Addy led the way to seats at the rear.

“Afraid of a crash?” he asked as he stowed his gear and hers. “I don’t think any of us would survive, sitting at the back or not.”

She wasn’t about to explain any of her various reasons for the seating choice, not her anxiety, nor her desire to hear the engines more closely nor…well, anything else. “What brings you to the ship?” she asked instead, a little desperately. The employee orientation had suggested the question as a surefire conversational gambit when encountering a passenger.

He frowned as he sat next to her and offered her three pieces of red-and-white striped candy, which he’d fished out of the satchel while storing it in the overhead bin. “I’m meeting a few old friends at the next planet and then we’re going to do a gig together. Maybe. I haven’t quite decided. I kinda like the solitary road.”

“Oh.” She didn’t know where to go from there. She was having flashbacks to every school she’d ever attended, where even if she was lucky enough to have another person want to be friends, she never knew what to say. Engines and any high tech system were so much easier to understand but other kids weren’t interested in talking about those.

VS: Next week we’ll see where the conversation goes…

Distracting Weekend Writing Warriors

Here’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

I’m now taking snippets from my newly released novel STAR CRUISE STAR SONG.

The snippet from close to the beginning of the book. Addy is at the spaceport on her way to join her new spaceship, the Nebula Zephyr cruise liner. A man asks her to help him get on board and avoid a waiting crowd of reporters by acting as his girlfriend:

They walked together as if they actually were a couple and Addy was acutely conscious of his muscular body close to hers. He smelled like clean fresh citrus, underlaid with a darker spice and the mere thought surprised Addy, who wasn’t used to thinking in such sensory terms. She liked the sensation of being pressed close to him and she loved not being alone. All of which was confusing. This person was a total stranger and he was taking liberties in the way he held her so shouldn’t she be outraged? Indignant?

But her body was having a completely different reaction and the unaccustomed feelings were distracting.

They’d walked past the bulk of the raucous crowd with no problem but one man split off and accosted them. “Are you Ryder McRhodes?” he asked her companion.

“Naw, man, although I’m flattered.” As he lied, the passenger laughed as if he was without a single care in the world. He hugged Addy closer and said, “Just trying to get back to my ship on time with my girl here, after a day sightseeing.” He lifted Addy’s badge, which was hanging on a lanyard around her neck and flashed it. “See? We’re crew.”

“Engineering,” she said with the conviction of truth. Although she was puzzled by the whole encounter, Addy smiled and kept walking as Ryder did and they went through the gate to the restricted crew only area with no problem.  The man heaved a huge sigh.

“And we’re golden now,” he said. “I can’t thank you enough.”

The danger on board comes ever closer to Addy as the cruise continues…
