HIGH FLYER (VERDANT STRING) by Michelle Diener
VS Note: I love her books and have been impatiently waiting! Had this pre-ordered.
Flying the head-of-planet around isn’t a job for the faint of heart. Especially not on Faldine, the planet in the Verdant String whose magnetic fields actively fight against technology, bringing down the ships of the unwary or the incompetent.
Hana thrives on the challenge, though. Thrives on everything about her job. It keeps her from thinking too much about what happened to her during the war, and what she is becoming. A relationship with the head-of-planet himself, though, is more than she wants to deal with.
Iver Sugotti feels like he fell into the role of head-of-planet by default. He knows he’s good at the job, and he’s enjoying the challenge of making tech work on a planet that eats tech for breakfast, but the one thing he really wants–Hana–seems out of his reach. His pilot has made it clear she’s not interested, and he can only respect the boundaries she’s set. But when someone wants him dead, he and Hana are plunged into an all-out race for their lives. Iver discovers those closest to him have betrayed him, but also, that his pilot is not as disinterested as she seems. As they try to outwit their enemies, they discover they are far better together than they are apart, and that Hana really is at her best when she’s flying high.
An alien assassin. A forgotten human. A planet determined to claim them both. Since being kidnapped from Earth, Hanna has been treated as little more than a performing animal. Her latest indignity is being displayed in a cage in a seedy bar. When a massive alien warrior stops to examine her, she expects the worst. To her shock, the warrior frees her instead. Scared and alone, she doesn’t hesitate to turn to him. But there are more surprises to come… Aidon is running out of time. Although eliminating galactic scum is a profitable occupation, it takes a toll on his unique skills. He needs to return to his planet immediately. Acquiring a human female, no matter how tempting, was not in his plans. Yet now that he has her, how can he let her go?She looks at him so trustingly – but his planet is a dangerous place, and she’s about to find out he’s the biggest predator of them all.
I’ve ruined everything. I had a mate. Resonance. Happiness. But then T’chai’s attacked by ravenous sky-claw and almost killed. To help him recover, I tell the healer to turn off our unfulfilled resonance. It’s temporary…or so I think. Big mistake. Because now my khui acts like it’s dead and it hates T’chai. But I still love him. How do we move forward when I can’t bear his touch? Is there a way to get back our happiness together, or is it time to give up on what we once had? T’chai has other plans, though. He’s not giving up on us. If it means crossing the world, he’s ready to do it at my side.
In the future a united Earth, to deal with the problem of population control, divides its population into classes of citizen and non-gratis. To be born a non-gratis means a life of little freedoms and the constant possibility of being assigned to work on a colony. Lacking citizenship, every aspect of their life is controlled from where they live, down to marriage and childbearing regulations. The only possible escape from life as a non-gratis is to qualify for one of the limited slots available for entrance into the military. For most, however, it is the only life that they will ever know.
Charlie has prepared all her life for the possibility of being shipped off to work in a colony, so when she is selected for part of the initialization phase colony laborers she is determined to make the best out of a new life on a very different and hostile planet. Assigned as a labor assistant in the exploratory lab seems like a step up in the right direction for her. Caring for the wildlife specimens is far preferable to working as a laborer preparing the first of the fields or in any of the common industries.
That is, until a vaguely humanoid specimen is captured and brought in. The promise of death that clings to it is fulfilled when it breaks out from containment and she finds herself hostage to a being with a thirst for vengeance. Far away from the colony, Charlie is forced to carve out a new life for herself in a dangerous world, but will she be able to safeguard her heart from the biggest threat of them all?—A male who is determined to claim all of her.
She’s not about to trade one cage for another. After being stolen by sex slavers at a young age I’m not expecting to find prince charming. Even when a client buys my freedom and sets me up with a new home and sympathetic friends, I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop. Then one day a moody but sexy blue alien shows up to complicate this new life. Yehven’s not familiar with humans. He’s also rude and if he thinks I’ll jump his bones just because he’s hot and showing interest, he’s more clueless than I thought. If he wants me, he’s going to have to earn me. After all, I’m no one’s slave any longer.
Kerylis Delgado is a top ranked fighter pilot for the Terran Republic Asteri Elite. She’s got a dream assignment working with sentient ships and a sexy, alien co-pilot named Nyin. His muscular body and long blue hair stir up all kinds of lustful thoughts — ones that he might be able to hear. Nyin feels an attraction to this vibrant, rough-around-the-edges human woman. Stronger than he’s ever felt with any other. Working so closely with her each day makes him struggle to keep his feelings to himself — not so easy when you’re a telepath. As they both work to get a hybrid ship up in the air, they will discover that there are some thoughts that run deeper than telepathy.
It’s been over a year since Vicky Ortiz left her abusive ex-boyfriend, and she’s been on the run ever since. No matter where she goes, Thomas tracks her down. She barely escaped last time—and she’s certain that the next time he finds her, he really will kill her. So she escapes to the one place he can’t follow her: the Alien Warriors’ Reparation Brides Program. Draakvhed warrior Qhaal doesn’t really want a mate. Not yet. But if he doesn’t accept his place in the program now, he may never get another chance. So when he’s matched with a human woman who wants nothing more than safety, he jumps at the chance to create a detailed nuptial contract. No emotions and very few strings—protection for her and heirs for him. It seems like the perfect arrangement. Until he meets her and realizes he wants much more than their contract allows. Now he has two weeks before their mating ceremony to convince her that he could be more than an alien of convenience—or their contract will be enforceable for the rest of their lives.
Preforming a speech in front of thousands was only the beginning of my worries…My life with my clan was starting to fall into place, as my relationships with my mates continued to settle into our new normal routines. But I keep hearing a mysterious voice, and it is sending my mates into fits of worry. As if that is not enough for me to worry about, I received a summons from the Aldawi Sovereign, wanting to meet the one who captured his son’s heart. Not only is he the ruler of one of the most powerful territories, but he is the sire of my children’s father. The problem? He won’t take no for an answer. Who knew this visit would forever change all of our futures.
VS Note: Not a romance but sounded intriguing. A release of note last week…
Far in the future, human beings have seeded themselves amongst the stars. Since decoding the language of the universe 8,000 years ago, they have reached the very edges of their known galaxy and built a near-utopia across thousands of worlds, united and ruled by a powerful organization known as the Ascendance. The peaceful stability of their society relies solely on their use of this Deep Language of the cosmos.
But this knowledge is a valuable secret, and a holy order of monastics known as the First House are tasked with monitoring its use and “correcting” humanity’s further development. Elyth is one such mendicant, trained as a planetary assassin, capable of infiltrating and ultimately destroying worlds that have been corrupted, using nothing more than her words.
To this end, Elyth is sent to the world Qel in response to the appearance of a forbidden strain of the Deep Language that was supposed to have died out with its founder over seven hundred years prior. What she finds on the backwater planetoid will put her abilities to the test and challenge what she knows of the Deep Language, the First House, and the very nature of the universe.

Especially when her people abducted his sister?
The plan was for Reign to ride off into the sunset with her harem of Xytyl warriors—Kilan, Iruda and Halo. Ride off into the sunset as in escape XT2 on the first spaceship they could get their hands on, of course. The boys were more than willing to give up all that they’d worked for to start afresh with her. But, oh, what if their sacrifices were for nothing? Before the boys could kick off the first step of the plan, they were arrested for a crime they didn’t even know they’d committed. A crime no other warrior had ever been arrested for. In the blink of an eye, the boys became the most despised people on their planet. A dark fate awaited them. Until Reign received an offer that would change her life—and the future of XT2—irrevocably.

It’s fall 2007. A well-timed leak has revealed that the US government might have engaged in first contact. Cora Sabino is doing everything she can to avoid the whole mess, since the force driving the controversy is her whistleblower father. Even though Cora hasn’t spoken to him in years, his celebrity has caught the attention of the press, the Internet, the paparazzi, and the government—and with him in hiding, that attention is on her. She neither knows nor cares whether her father’s leaks are a hoax, and wants nothing to do with him—until she learns just how deeply entrenched her family is in the cover-up, and that an extraterrestrial presence has been on Earth for decades.
Realizing the extent to which both she and the public have been lied to, she sets out to gather as much information as she can, and finds that the best way for her to uncover the truth is not as a whistleblower, but as an intermediary. The alien presence has been completely uncommunicative until she convinces one of them that she can act as their interpreter, becoming the first and only human vessel of communication. Their otherworldly connection will change everything she thought she knew about being human—and could unleash a force more sinister than she ever imagined.

He’s not like anything Lana has ever encountered. Asset X: Massive, deadly, a little terrifying to say the least. A devilish warrior. And a killer. She shouldn’t think of him like that. He is an alien after all. And possibly their enemy. For Xerus claims he is on a mission. A mission to destroy. And he cannot afford to fail. If he dares let Lana get close, dares open his cold heart to her, she could compromise everything.

After ten years of living on an isolated, tech-free ranch with her mother, sixteen-year-old Hedda is going back to the world of the Glare — her word for cell phones, computers, and tablets. When you get sent back from a planet because you don’t want to bed a vile Alien, you get sent to the Salt Mines… and if you are me… you find a way out of them. Call me crazy, but I’m the only girl on this rock who doesn’t want to just put out for a new Alien master because they paid “good coin” for me. I prefer to pick my tryst. Which is probably why I got sent back to Earth, and with debt from my interstellar journey, I landed right in the salt mines. An indentured servant for the bastard TerraLink program and all their empty promises. I’ve been trying for years to suck it to the man, which is why when I saw a ship fall from the sky, I knew it was more than my ticket off this rock. If only it wasn’t inhabited by an Alien with steely eyes, throbbing muscles, and an injury that my friend back at mines referred to as being in the sexy zone. Good gravy! Sexy zone indeed…Darnit! I got to stay on task. Steal this guys ship, screw over TerraLink, get off this rock for good. Easy. If only mister Abs for days Alien was lying in my way looking like he and his abs could solve all the problems in the world.
Life in the city of Lumen is filled with secrets, especially if you’re a scavenging tinkerer from the Mids. Lumen was made to keep us safe from the world beyond our walls, but this oasis quickly turned into a totalitarian hellhole where the government monitors our every move. From cyberkinetic spies to QR coded tattoos and an overly involved city guard, Lumen’s technological advancements make it all too easy to keep the city’s ‘lowers’ where they belong.
With my best friend Wade, a tech guru, by my side, we do the best we can to survive, but when one of our under the table scavenging jobs goes wrong, we dig far deeper into one of Lumen’s secrets than we’d ever wanted to tread. Starting a new life in the high-security Lumen Correctional Facility doesn’t mean we escape our city’s secrets, and life only gets more dangerous when the warden takes a particular interest in me. At his order, Wade and I are entered into a special work program, and we find ourselves waking up in a strange underwater prison that’s not supposed to exist. As if that’s not enough, we’re tasked to protect four dangerous men who are unlike any I’ve ever met before. The Suit, the Alpha, the Goth, and the Daddy. The more I’m around them, the more I’m drawn to them…and seeing Wade in a whole new light. I hope there’s time to figure this all out before the mysteries surrounding us before we dig our graves. I thought Lumen had secrets, but it’s nothing compared to Eden.
One determined, lost brother. One hell of a confused human female. The last thing Lexi remembers is a bright light flashing before her eyes before she’s thrown into a cell with an enormous blue-skinned alien with black horns, a bladed tail, mountains of muscles and told to breed. Rase can’t believe his fated mate is in his arms. He also can’t believe he crash laded on the last planet he’d ever want to be on – that of the crime lord that wants himself and his brothers dead. He also won’t bring himself to do the one thing that burns his blood to do and make love to his fated human female. Life doesn’t last long here and he won’t die and leave his mate possibly pregnant, helpless, alone and subject to the whims of the crime lord. Life hasn’t been fantastic for Lexi, but being trapped in a cell with no privacy is the pits. Add to that a strange pull of attraction that’s harder and harder to deny with an alien who tells her he is her fated mate and she’s downright screwed. Figuratively and literally. Survival is doubtful, but Rase must act. He must escape the breeding cell, survive the fighting pits, save his exotic mate and end the reign of the biggest crime lord the ten Quadrant has ever known.
Being abducted by aliens was nothing compared to being unabducted by them… unabducted is a word, isn’t it? Let’s start with the overgrown feral rat people. Or maybe it’s overgrown feral mole men…Either way, let that sink in for a moment. Not a pretty thought, right? Not so long ago the only thing I had to worry about was overcooking someone’s steak. Now it’s all bloodthirsty beasts, brooding warriors, and being passed from one alien to another like a popular trading card. Did I mention brooding warriors? That’s the roughest part of all of this. Well, one particular brooding warrior, I guess. In the space of a day and a night the guy has gone from ignoring my very existence to stalking me across the face of the planet. And if I can’t shake him, I don’t know what he’ll do to me.
Rus would have preferred to die in the apocalypse, but he made a promise to stay alive. But staying alive isn’t the same as living. For the past year, Rus has shied away from the outside world, avoiding humanity and brooding in the tragedy of his former life. When Polly, the young and fearless wild-card, stumbles upon Rus while out scavenging for supplies, her instincts tell her to run. But she quickly discovers that in a world crawling with death, there is something about this man that makes her feel alive. As her walls slowly crumble, Rus believes the world might have something left to offer besides death. If they can survive.
I’m stuck on a pleasure planet with a crazy alien warrior who is supposed to be my mate.
This is waaaaay beyond FML. If I knew when I woke up this morning that I was gonna find out there are honest to god aliens out in space and they’re taking human women as mates and I was gonna be next… well, I would have just gone back to sleep. The worst part? He thinks I’m a human warrior that’s just as crazy as him. See, I’m an actress. I’ve been stuck doing action movies. And someone somewhere made a mistake. They thought I did my own stunts. So they matched us, and stuck us together. I mean, what are two supersoldiers supposed to do on a date? Kill cyborgs? Raid outposts?
I’m more used to mini golf and cocktails. I better figure out a way for us to work together. And soon. Because he’s got a whole month planned out for us. Love really did turn out to be war.
The black market thief is about to be royally screwed. Being a lower in Earth’s society isn’t a walk in the park. I survive by stealing and selling the Draax healing juice on the black market. Did I mention he’s the freaking head of the King’s Guard and the King’s best friend? Now, a war between two alien races has me trapped on the Draax planet until they can send me back to Earth to await a far worse fate. I need an escape plan. Instead, I can’t get Galen out of my head. It’s his job to protect the king from people like me, but our attraction could put both our lives at risk. We’re growing closer every day, but the clock is ticking. Our love story can’t have a happy ending. Or can it?

One problem—this place isn’t abandoned. Miners actually live here. And she’s chosen Zayzon’s bed. And muttering something about mating compatibility. Whatever. She’s just that desperate, so she offers to become their housekeeper if they’ll let her stay. The brothers accept, and Lila cleans up their freaking mess, relieved to have somewhere safe to live. Meanwhile, Zayzon keeps insisting that she continue to sleep on his bunk. And she keeps accepting! Because it’s getting harder and harder to deny her attraction for his possessive gaze, razor-sharp claws and his large… um, personality? But Lila can’t fall for anyone, even a scary male who turns out to be cuddly. Not when demons from her past are about to return for their down payment. Can a human save an alien miner’s life, without breaking his heart?

My savior is a chaotic, bat-wielding punk with a bubble gum pink mohawk and a killer smile.
In a mad dash to escape the thieves, my knight in studded armor sweeps me across the country while hitting every tourist trap along the way. While smuggling a fossil, might I add. Oh, and did I mention this pink punk can shift into a dinosaur?

Noir Rose, a horror and thriller author, always believed that the fictional monsters that she wrote about were just that – fictional. The true horror of the hideous beasts resided only within the gruesome tales she wrote. She never dreamed that reality could be just as cold and cruel as the monsters writhing inside her mind. With the mysterious arrival of a personal invitation to a masquerade ball, Noir’s life takes a page out of one of her stories. The Crows have come home. Men cloaked in secrets and hidden behind white masks, earning them their chilling nickname the Faceless. Noir should’ve ran while she had the chance, but the Faceless have set their sights on her. Now that they’ve found her, they’ll never let her go. They’ve waited an eternity for her, intent on using her to save themselves from the dark fate of their cursed immortal lives. Can Noir find a way to stop her fate being tied to their own? Or will she succumb to their dark desires and break through their black hearts, lifting the curse forever? One thing’s for sure, she won’t come out of this the same person. Because sometimes there’s beauty in the beasts within.

I needed to know if there was anyone else like me out there, and I needed to know now. The only problem was that when I got my wish, well…Let’s just say things didn’t quite turn out the way I had expected. Then again, when did they ever?

With unlimited wealth at his disposal, Albert uses experimental technology to banish ghosts to an eternal darkness forever. To achieve his vicious ends, Albert plots to manipulate Eve and twist her abilities into a psychic weapon—a weapon that not only poses a threat to spirits but to everyone she cares for, including her beloved Detective Horowitz.

Fresh out of prison, Frost had still been finding his way in post-battle Birmingham when Banshee walked out of the clubhouse for the last time. He didn’t know how much he was going to miss her until she was gone. He’d had use of the fiery little sweetbutt anytime he wanted, so he hadn’t considered turning her into something more. Now it was too late. She’d turned her back on the club, and it’s nearly impossible to come back from that.
Banshee couldn’t bear being around Frost without being seen by him another day, so she’d walked out instead of accepting consequences for being a brat. Most days, she’s certain she made the right decision. She’d been the club’s plaything while she figured out where her life was going, but she was back on track now, and it didn’t matter how much she’d cared for Frost, because he hadn’t cared enough to tell her not to leave. Besides, there was no going back — not only because of what the club would require for her to make amends, but it would destroy her if Frost treated her as a faceless sweetbutt, no matter how badly she craved having him in her life.

LINKS TO RECENT NEW RELEASES POSTS from Veronica:
“New” is generally plus or minus a week or two. I try to catch up on ones I missed in recent months. And I may mention ‘special items’.
I do NOT cover every single new release in SFR/FantasyR/PNR. I never have. That would be an impossible task for any human! I assemble my list by hand every week based on various informal inputs, and I do curate the list to some extent…
I check and verify all the buy links at the time I create the post but after that I’m not responsible.
