Go Now Ensign Weekend Writing Warriors

Here’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

I’m now taking snippets from my newly released novel STAR CRUISE STAR SONG.

The excerpt: Addy believes there’s something wrong with the ship’s antigrav transport system and has alerted the Ship’s Artificial Intelligence.

“There is a tech doing routine maintenance on the central impeller now,” the Ship said. “On Level  20 sublevel 3. I’m scanning the readouts and I concur this is quite alarming. You need to go and correct the technician immediately.”

Swallowing hard, Addy looked back into the gravlift, seeing crew members rising and descending in great numbers. All these people are at risk if I don’t take immediate action. “But shouldn’t we tell the Chief Engineer? Or the captain? Or—“

“Go now, ensign.” The ship was relentless.

Addy took one step and another, clutching her backpack and leaped into the sparkling stream, heading toward the bottom as fast as she could go. Fortunately she was accomplished at riding antigrav, had won a number of races in her intramural days at the Academy and made it to the central mechanism terminus in record time. She stepped off onto the platform and yelled at the startled technician kneeling there. “Stop! You’re doing it backward,” she said. “Never spin the ancillary nubs in the reverse direction. And you’ve got the finbusters set too low.” Dropping her bag, she stepped forward and elbowed him aside. “Let me fix this.” As she adjusted the mechanism and tweaked the parameters she could hear the harmonics of the antigrav generator settle down from the terrifying ragged edge she’d been assaulted by when she’d stepped into the stream twenty odd levels above. The urge to close her eyes and submerge herself in the beautifully restored rhythm was nearly overwhelming but she couldn’t indulge her gift in a public setting.

VS Note: What a start for her first day on the ship! More next week…

Here’s the official blurb:

Addy Tryndall is a fresh graduate from a highly respected engineering college in the Sectors, on her way to a plum job on the Nebula Zephyr cruise ship. She knows she’ll be on probation but she’s determined to succeed and nothing is going to distract her.

Ryder McRhodes is a has-been interstellar rock star, on his way to reunite with his fellow band members to see if the lightning of mega success will strike twice for them. He isn’t sure he wants to be in the spotlight again and he hasn’t been able to write music since the band broke up.

Addy has secrets. Ryder needs a muse to unblock the creative flow…could her tightly guarded past be the answer  to his problem?  When the two are thrown together in an attempt to avoid the interstellar paparazzi he’s intrigued. She’s wary.

And someone is sabotaging systems on the Nebula Zephyr. Addy unwittingly finds herself in the middle of the situation while juggling her increasing attraction to Ryder and her challenges on the new  job. Can she trust him with her secret? Or will he break her heart?

The danger on board comes ever closer to Addy as the cruise continues…

  1. Wow! Looks like Abby just helped avert a major disaster. I wonder who the tech was who was messing it up and whether it was a test of their new crew member. Gripping excerpt, Veronica.

  2. Disaster avoided, thank goodness! She’s terribly good at her job, which is a blessing in this instance. I hope she’s going to get some rest now. She’s had a busy day! Great snippet! Tweeted.
