This or That?

You know I LOVE magazine quick questionnaires, so today I’m answering the Glamour “This or That” challenge (with a few of my own thrown in)! Here goes:

Tom boy or girly girl? Girly girl ¾ of the time, but I went fishing and hunting too.

Straight leg or flared jeans? Actually, I like boot cut…

Grand Theft Auto or World of Warcraft? Waiting for Colonial Marines…

Mascara or lipstick? Mascara! I love cobalt blue the best…

Ballet or hiphop? Am I dancing it or watching it? I’m always in awe of anyone who can dance, knows their left from their right…can we talk Channing Tatum and his pals in Magic Mike?

Mashed potatoes or French fries? Sweet potato fries!

Star Trek or Star Wars? Ooh, hard one, so many aspects to consider! Maybe if Lucas had never done the prequels or messed with the originals – Han did shoot first….JarJar Binks was awful….who can resist, Chris Pine in the Star Trek reboot……and what about Battlestar Galactica???

(VS sez: I think Glamour magazine probably likes their celebrity guests to have more monosyllabic answers but hey, I am a WRITER LOL)

About the men, great kisser or great dancer? I can work with either, no problem!

Lions or tigers? Tigers….I love Hari, the tiger shifter in Marjorie Liu’s Tiger Eye (pardon me a moment while I swoon…)…although I also enjoy Shelly Laurenston’s lions….oh, this question wasn’t about shifters???? Well then, my bad, moving on…

Funny guy or hot guy?  I believe you can have both in one package, she said primly.

Cats or dogs? Cats rule!!!! (But I have known some very nice dogs.)

Sharks or dolphins? What, no octopus love?

Catsup or mustard? Used to be catsup, trying to avoid sugary stuff now but can’t eat catsup that doesn’t have sugar, so mustard. Except on my sweet potato fries…. (Long answer!)

Flowers or candy? Currently flowers, they’re better for my diet.

VS sez, SOOOO many more questions I could answer but it’s your turn, Dear Reader, what “This or That” question have you been dying to answer?

My Favorite Military Authors for July 4th & G.C Giveaway!

July 6th: Namia was the randomly selected winner for the gift card giveaway and thanks to everyone for stopping by to look at the book list!

Although I’m a big reader of romances, science fiction, nonfiction and more, I also enjoy reading military fiction and nonfiction. Thought today I’d mention some of my favorite military authors, as a tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces, who sacrifice so much to keep us safe in this big, scary world. Some have been guests on my blog in the past, some are my twitter friends, all are people I admire and whose books I enjoyed. Alphabetical order, not playing favorites!

Billy Allmon, WHEN THE BULLET HITS YOUR FUNNY BONE: THE ESSENCE OF A NAVY SEAL, Amazon. Here’s the partial blurb:

“…a collection of true events about the author’s time in U.S. Navy SEAL Teams and how SEALs use their humor to cope with all sorts of tragic events that they experience in their professional careers. This book offers the reader a personal glimpse into the minds of America’s most elite warriors. The stories explain how SEALs bond with each other to become brothers-in-arms through their difficult training and tactical missions. This book also explains why SEALs use extreme humor, on themselves and others, in order to cope with a job that places these professional warriors face to face with death on almost a daily basis...”

J. Robert DuBois, POWERFUL PEACE: A NAVY SEAL’S LESSONS ON PEACE FROM A LIFETIME AT WAR, Amazon.

“In Powerful Peace, J. Robert DuBois takes on a crucial, unprecedented mission for a U.S. Navy SEAL: the relentless pursuit of interpersonal and international peacemaking. With gut wrenching candor and surprising moments of comedy, he narrates a personal journey through decades of conflict, its often-absurd origins, its ever-present innocent victims, and its potential solutions. Most importantly, Robert delivers practical recommendations for private citizens and policy makers alike. He offers rare context for students of international relations, community leaders, and soldiers bound for unfamiliar lands.”

Chris Kyle, AMERICAN SNIPER: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE MOST LETHAL SNIPER IN U.S. MILITARY HISTORY, Amazon.

From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan (“the devil”) and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle earned legendary status among his fellow SEALs, Marines, and U.S. Army soldiers, whom he protected with deadly accuracy from rooftops and stealth positions. Gripping and unforgettable, Kyle’s masterful account of his extraordinary battlefield experiences ranks as one of the great war memoirs of all time. (VS sez, his wife also wrote portions of the book and her strong viewpoint is an amazing addition to the narrative.)

Jack Murphy, REFLEXIVE FIRE (A DECKARD NOVEL), Amazon. A little about Jack: “…an eight year Army Special Operations veteran who served as a Sniper and Team Leader in 3rd Ranger Battalion and as a Senior Weapons Sergeant on a Military Free Fall team in 5th Special Forces Group. After growing up in New York, Jack Murphy enlisted in the US Army at 19 years old. Completing Infantry Basic Training, Airborne School, and the Ranger Indoctrination Program, he was assigned to 3rd Ranger Battalion. As a Ranger he served as an Anti-Tank gunner, Sniper, and Team Leader and he also graduated from Ranger School and Sniper School.”

And the book, which is only one of several novels Jack has out:

An assassin who is in over his head.
A cabal that wants him to lead a secret army.
A conspiracy decades in the making.

Brandon T. Webb, THE RED CIRCLE: MY LIFE IN THE NAVY SEAL SNIPER CORPS AND HOW I TRAINED AMERICA’S DEADLIEST MARKSMEN, Amazon.

“…Brandon Webb’s experiences in the world’s most elite sniper corps are the stuff of legend. From his grueling years of training in Naval Special Operations to his combat tours in the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan, The Red Circle provides a rare and riveting look at the inner workings of the U.S. military through the eyes of a covert operations specialist.

Yet it is Webb’s distinguished second career as a lead instructor for the shadowy “sniper cell” and Course Manager of the Navy SEAL Sniper Program that trained some of America’s finest and deadliest warriors—including Marcus Luttrell and Chris Kyle—that makes his story so compelling. Luttrell credits Webb’s training with his own survival during the ill-fated 2005 Operation Redwing in Afghanistan. Kyle went on to become the U.S. military’s top marksman, with more than 150 confirmed kills.”

Scott A. Zastrow, THE DeGUELLO: THE A TEAM THAT STARTED A WAR, Amazon. A little about the author:

“…an Army Veteran with more than 23 years of service. Most of his career was spent in Special Forces with an incredible operational tempo which has taken him to more than 25 countries around the World. He has numerous combat deployments as well as both humanitarian and non-combat missions. After leaving Special Forces in 2007, he went on to finish his Masters Degree as a Physician Assistant at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and now works as a PA full time…”

And the book:

“…We simply call it 9/11 now. That day means something different to so many people, but for ten Green Berets, it means even more. Just days after the horrific attacks in New York, a handful of Green Berets from the decorated 5th Special Forces Group were secretly inserted deep behind enemy lines in Northern Afghanistan to set the stage for the upcoming War on Terror. Their mission was to seek out and kill as many Taliban and Al Qaida forces as they could find. Go inside the legend of one of Americas most elite units in this exciting and sometimes humorous account of their avenging the most horrific terrorist attack we have ever experienced.
Written as a fictional story and firsthand account of the actual events that transpired for the first Special Forces A-Team into Afghanistan after 9/11, The Deguello pulls the reader into the actual Team. You get the feeling you are right there with them as they infiltrate Afghanistan…”

If the novels and nonfiction accounts I’ve mentioned above are right down your alley, I’d also recommend  checking out SOFREP: Special Operations Forces Situation Report website run by Brandon and Jack http://sofrep.com/ . SOFREP features articles, videos and lively discussions on the US and Allied Special Operations Community.

Happy Fourth of July to all, with a special thanks to the men and women of the Armed Forces who won and continue to preserve our Independence.

A Writer’s Day at Suits & Spooks LA

How on earth, you may ask, did I end up at an event entitled Suits & Spooks? Being neither….

I do go to plenty of conferences for the day job but they’re all about science and Mars Rovers and process improvements. I go to conferences as an author too, of course, and learn to hone my skills, improve the plotting and heighten the tension…but the purpose of Suits & Spooks per their website is “to bring members from…the U.S. Intelligence Community together with innovative thinkers from a wide variety of disciplines including technology, finance, entertainment and science, for a day of frank discussions and innovative problem solving.”

Not exactly a description of SF and Paranormal Romance Author me, although I do pride myself on being an out of the box thinker, but Jeffrey Carr, the organizer of the event, was kind enough to add me to the attendees.

I went primarily because it was a rare opportunity to hear Rob DuBois speak. Rob is the author of the soon-to-be-released book Powerful Peace: A Navy SEAL’s Lessons On Peace From A Lifetime At War (due to be released on July 4th). He and I have been twitter friends for quite a while and I’d been privileged to read an advance copy of the book. Here’s part of the book blurb from Amazon:

In Powerful Peace, J. He offers rare context for students of international relations, community leaders, and soldiers bound for unfamiliar lands.

I’ll be having Rob on the blog in the future for an interview (and I tweet about the book and related topics fairly often). For now I’ll simply say it was a privilege to hear him speak to the concepts in the book and to have a chance to discuss Powerful Peace with him.

But I also enjoyed the other speakers (unfortunately missed a few due to being caught on the 405 Freeway “Rampture” gridlock on the drive down). It was fascinating to watch as each person spoke, how others in the room discovered possible synergies or connections – the networking was amazing. The ground rule for the day is nonattribution so I can’t go into detail but I came away with my mind buzzing about some opportunities for future involvement, with Jim Hake’s Spirit of America, for example.

From their website:

We provide whatever our troops need to help the local people: sewing machines, blankets, clean water, job training, expert solutions and more. This builds goodwill. It makes our troops safer and more successful in their mission…

Me being me, I gathered up a few kernels of potential plot ideas here and there during the day, for the future of course!

But as a concerned citizen of our country and the world, perhaps the most encouraging thing this civilian Mother and Grandmother came away with was a renewed feeling that individuals can contribute to solving the world’s problems, to tackling some seemingly behemoth problems facing us…we can all make a difference. I was encouraged by the caliber of the men and women in the room, and the things they’ve undertaken in various areas I can’t mention in the blog! My brain is still whirling, two days later, over all the topics that were discussed and the possibilities and ramifications.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day and actually, if they ever have another Suits & Spooks in the LA area, I’ll be signing up to attend again.

Six Sentence Sunday – SF Adventure Continues

Going back to my SFR , STILL out on submission, set in the same universe as my recently published WRECK of the NEBULA DREAM. Andrianda (Andi) Markriss, a planetary representative for Loxton Galactic Trading, has been spending a lazy summer with her best friend in the highly exclusive summer compound of the planet Zulaire’s ruling nobility, networking. On a day when a number of strange  and disturbing things have already happened, Captain Tom Deverane, Sectors Special Forces, unexpectedly shows up with a troop of soldiers and demands she leave with him. Immediately.

Andi doesn’t take this very well….in fact, she refuses to go. Later in the evening, all hell has broken loose, as the captain predicted.
Trying to avoid spoilers here, after certain “events”, she and the soldiers are on the run.

In the excerpt three weeks ago Tom was taken suddenly ill. Last week Tom and Andi discussed his illness. The conversation continues…:

Eyebrows drawn together in a small frown, he studied her face. “You look tired – tell me you aren’t sitting in the chair all night. I’ll have to reprimand Mitch for letting you pull the hard duty.”

“I’m fine,” Andi said. “In fact, you should probably try to get some more sleep.”

“I’ve slept enough.”

Promise I’ll pick up from here for next week’s six…

I LOVE and appreciate your comments….
