We’re onto a new story of mine, a WIP that still needs a lot of work. Mark, an ex-Special Forces soldier in the Sectors, has been hired by the Outlier Empress to rescue a kidnap victim who’s been taken to the border planet Freemarket, where anything goes and the authorities are usually hands off. Kind of like Las Vegas…he’s broken into the house of  Barent Kliin, the kidnapper, persuaded Alessandra to go with him and fled in a stolen car, pursued by the bad guys and the planetary police. They collided with a cargo hauler…Mark knocked the driver out and assisted Alessandra from their wrecked vehicle, after which the couple flee into the crowded marketplace but are now trapped…until a strange little being showed up, offering to help…having no choice, Mark and Sandy flee with the creature and fall into a tent. The owner of the tent is an extremely mysterious being, who prevented him from shooting at their pursuers. She’s offering them the opportunity to Travel…not in a groundcar or a spaceship…last week she showed them the Globes of Amarkana. Mark is speaking:

           “What do we do?”

“Pick the Globe meant for you,” Lajollae said, “You’ll know which one is your destiny.”

“What if we pick differently?” Sandy clutched at his sleeve, “I can’t lose you again!”

Lajollae shook her head. “You can each choose your own destination or one may decide for both.”

“This mad escapade is because I trusted you,” Sandy said, “Decide for us.”

Mark took a step toward the Globes, studying them, trying to decide which to pick, not sure what was going to happen next – there was no going back, no other way to end this.

(Note from me: maybe 2-3 more weeks of this scene to share…thanks for all the kind comments last week on the happy occasion of my daughter’s wedding!)

  1. Congrats!

Great dialogue and setting building in this excerpt, Veronica, I can’t wait to learn more!

  2. What a place to stop! As usual, you lead us right to the edge of our chairs! Those globes present so many possibilities. Am super curious how Mark is going to decide, and of course what happens then.

Congrats on your daughter’s wedding, and very happy Easter to your whole family!

  3. Hehehe it must say something about me that I would’ve said “you chose last time, I’ll decide for us both this time.” Great snippet, Veronica. 🙂

  4. How did I miss the wedding news!?!? Congratulations – I hope it was a lovely day and wonderful time.

What pressure to put on Mark – having to chose the right destiny – can’t wait to see what happens next.

  5. So much depends on such a seemingly small choice…I’m very happy I’m not Mark. I can imagine a lifetime of relationship angst if he gets this wrong!

  6. “This mad escapade is because I trusted you,” Sandy said, “Decide for us.” — Wow, she really does trust him. If she trusted him a bit less, I can imagine her saying something like “You got us into this, you dumb jerk. No way I’m going to let you decide for me!”

And congrats on becoming a mother-in-law!

  7. Nothing like upping the stakes here. LOL At least he shouldn’t doubt her if she’s letting him pick their destiny. Pretty romantic when you think about it. Great 8!

  8. Ooh, what a fascinating little idea for traveling. Makes it feel a bit like the TARDIS actually…I’m anxious to see what Mark picks!

    Thanks so much for sharing!

  9. Of course she’s not putting any pressure on the guy, is she? I certainly wouldn’t want to be him right now. Very curious.

& Mazel Tov on your daughter’s wedding!

  10. That’s quite a big leap to take. Let’s hope they both get out of it alright. It sounds like a bad choice on his part may cause some strain on their relationship down the line.

    Congrats on your daughter’s wedding!
