Continuing with science fiction romance today. Here’s an excerpt from Lady of the Star Wind, an epic portal fantasy, which is undergoing a final edit and will be released after Star Cruise: Outbreak sometime early next year.

Sandy and Mark have been transported to an unknown world after breaking the Globe of Amarkana (you may remember those excerpts earlier in the year?). This snippet is from  quite a bit further in the novel, after Mark and Sandy have left the mysterious mountain oasis (which wasn’t a zoo after all), in the company of some new friends… Sandy was bitten by a snake, went into the green light with a woman unknown to her and now is sitting in a room she’s never seen before, with four women who seem to think Sandy is someone else…(the Rothan mentioned here is a local, traveling with Sandy and Mark.)

“I told you she wasn’t who we believed her to be,” The diminutive redhead spoke, voice triumphant, “We’ve made a mistake.”

“She has the key,” answered the blonde, sinking into one of the empty chairs.

The first woman who’d led them into the room made a shushing gesture. Turning to Sandy, she said, “We’re the Moon Sisters who watch over this world—Amrell, Terali, Lifnid, and Tresa.” She raised her eyebrows, “And you are?”

“Alessandra of the Outlier Empire.” She thought at least one of the names in the introduction sounded familiar – hadn’t Rothan made some reference to Amrell a few days ago?

“A name we’ve never heard before and a mortal we don’t know.” Tresa, the redhead, poured herself a drink, “We’re going to regret this rash proceeding.”

I’ll keep going with this scene for a few more weeks – there’s quite a bit more. I started the search for stock photos for the cover last week.

And in other news, I’m a new contributor to Amazing Stories, with my emphasis on science fiction romance. Here was my first post: http://amazingstoriesmag.com/2016/01/veronica-scott-talks-science-fiction-romance/

I’ll be blogging there twice a month, in addition to my USA Today/HEA SciFi Encounters column.tarantula nebula

  1. Kudos on Amazing Stories!

This snippet sounds a bit like Alice down the rabbit-hole, these ladies have attitude. It does make me curious who they are exactly and why she is there.

  2. Big congrats on your new gig! I’m glad you have more to post from this scene, I sure am curious where this is going. I like that there’s uncertainty over who Sandy is, makes this scene more interesting than an all-knowing group who never trip up.

  3. Congratulations on 1. The Amazing Stories gig and 2. Always keeping us guessing on what’s going on, who these people might be, and where the heck is Sandy anyway? Very interesting story.

  4. Congratulations on the new gig! And what a curve ball–they’ve taken the wrong person. But what did the snake bite have to do with it then? Did they send the snake to bite her and that’s how they took her? Amazing series of events here. Can’t wait for more!

  5. Congrats on the gig! And I am very interested to see exactly who these crazy women (who apparently make very poor decisions) are and what they are planning. Thanks so much for sharing!

  6. Wait, key? What key? I’m even more intrigued now. And oooh, I could barely comment on the snippet without blurting this out: CONGRATS on the Amazing Stories gig!! And have fun with the cover art search. Sometimes I find it oddly entertaining, sifting through stock photos. (Other times maddening, but we won’t go there, ha.) At times those images give me story or scene ideas.

  7. Congratulations on Amazing Stories! Happy news to start a new year. 🙂 Enjoyed the snippet. I wonder what will happen now that they realize she isn’t who they thought. But how is it she has the key?

  8. I’m with Elaine, is she in trouble now? She probably doesn’t have the key they want unless it’s not a physical key and something she might know. Intriguing. Congrats on Amazing stories!

  9. Congrats on blogging for Amazing Stories! That’s wonderful! And a very intriguing snippet. Well done! 🙂

  10. Thanks for all the comments and kind words on the snippet and also my new blogging opportunity. I do love talking about science fiction romance and hopefully finding some new readers for all of us who write that genre! I’ll keep going with this scene for WeWriWa, which has a lot more to go, since everyone seems to be not-bored yet LOL.

  11. Love the intro to the characters. Moon Sisters– I’m intrigued to know more about them. Congrats on Blogging for Amazing Stories.

  12. Oh now this is just leaving me with more and more questions. Who do they think she is? And what’s this key? Key to what? I love their title as Moon Sisters. Can’t wait to see where this is going.

    Congrats on Amazing Stories!
