One final excerpt from my story ‘Star Cruise: Stowaway’ in the PETS IN SPACE anthology, which is still doing pretty well in sales – thanks again for the support🙂 This is the last week to get a copy and have a portion of the proceeds go to Hero Dogs Inc. Next week I’ll move on to another book.

Edited a bit from the published version.

Owen has gone to visit the stowaway in sickbay and finds the pets are keeping her company.

Midorri chirruped and slithered to the floor, going to the portal, where she scratched at the door with two of her six feet.

Owen rose to let her out.

Moby promptly entered, jumping to the bed and rubbing Tyrelle’s face, arching her spine and purring loudly.

“When one leaves, the other arrives. You’re the keeper of the animals?” she asked.

“Moby’s mine. I rescued her from kids in a rough port town as a kitten a few years ago and brought her with me to the Zephyr. Midorri belongs to the entire ship, but she spends a lot of time in the cargo bay, with Moby, hunting vermin.” He sat, trapped in the small chair, “The Zephyr’s not  infested or anything, we run a tight ship, but there’s always a few space rats.” I can’t believe I’m talking to this beautiful woman about rats.

Here’s the blurb for the anthology, followed by the blurb for my story:

Cargo Master Owen Embersson is shocked when the Nebula Zephyr’s ship’s cat and her alien sidekick, Midorri, alert him to the presence of a stowaway. 1. Space rats? Somehow that sounds worse than Earth rats. Great snippet! 🙂 I’ve started reading this anthology and mentioned in in my newsletter that went out earlier today.

  2. Space rats don’t sound very good, but it’s nice to know there are cats around to get rid of them. Rescue animals are so special, no matter what they do after getting a second chance.

  3. Enjoy the snippet. Loved the last line. Talking about rats with a beautiful woman is probably not a great topic to get to know each other better. lol

  4. What are space rats? Normal rats who are aboard a star cruiser, or some new species of rat? And yes, rather bizarre to be talking to a woman about rats. LOL Love the drawing of Midorri and Moby.

  5. Owen has such a way around the ladies. LOL He’s a mechanic not suave. Love how he changes in the story. Moby and Midori are great character, too.

  6. I sort of described a space rat – briefly – in Star Cruise: Outbreak. I had no idea everyone would be so fascinated with the critters LOL! Poor Owen’s just not accustomed to making small talk with anyone…Thanks for the comments, always much appreciated… 🙂

  7. Haha, nothing will turn a woman on like talk of rats. 😉 Great excerpt, Veronica! I’ve really enjoyed reading bits and pieces of this story and hope the anthology continues to do well! 🙂

  8. I’d be all scratched up having a pet with 6 legs- I have trouble not getting scratched by my 4 legged furry pet. Tweeted.

  9. Rats do pretty much get anywhere. And if you have space rats, you need space cats! (Or something similar.) And you never know, she could find this conversation very interesting.

  10. I love cats and cat like creatures so I really appreciate your description of the 2 pets. very amused at the direction his conversation has gone.
