If you haven’t read any of my Badari Warriors series: Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens.
The excerpt, continuing on from where I stopped last week:
The scuffling sounds of the Khagrishi’s faltering steps came closer, audible over the faint buzz of the force barrier. There was a thump and Mandy’s eyes flew open, to see the tech crumpled on the floor outside the cell, “Oh, no, no, no!” Her voice rose with each syllable and she reached out instinctively to the fallen tech, “You have to help us.” She wanted to cry but her eyes were too dry.
The alien woman convulsed and her eyes flew open, staring directly at Mandy, who held her breath. A faint glimmer of intelligence shone deep in the feverish eyes but then the other fell into coughing, rolling onto her back and lying limp.
Mandy sensed her fellow prisoners coming toward her. She turned her head, “Stay back,” she said in a low hiss, making feeble hand gestures, “Let me handle this.” Focusing on the tech again, she leaned forward toward the dangerous barrier. Making her voice calm, encouraging even, she said, “Is it time for the experiments? Did the scientist send you to collect me? I’ve been waiting right here the way the guards told me to.”
The tech coughed again, rolled over and grabbed at the wall. “Time. Tests,” she muttered in Basic. She clawed her way to her feet, Mandy rising slowly inch by inch with her as if to lend the woman strength.
VS: We’ll keep going with this scene next week! LANDON’s blurb and buy links are at the end of the post but I also just released a Badari Warriors novella, featuring Jill and Aydarr (the couple in the first book of the award winning series…)
The blurb: Thrown together as helpless prisoners in the punishing conditions of a Khagrish lab, Jill and Aydarr fell in love. Claiming each other as mates despite only having one night alone in a cell, they formed a deep, loving mate bond. Now, a planetary year later, after escaping the lab and leading the ongoing rebellion against the enemy together, Aydarr longs for more. He wants a chance to show Jill how much she means to him.
He decides to risk everything to take his mate away from it all for a few days. But will the Khagrish, the threats lurking in the planet’s unexplored wilderness and the Badari goddess allow them to complete A Honeymoon for the Alpha?

And of course LANDON is still new!
The blurb: When unexpected circumstances give her a chance to escape from an alien scientist’s lab after she’s been tortured, Mandy Rennegar knew she should run for the hills with the other prisoners. There’s one more special captive who hasn’t been freed, however, and she decides to risk everything to help him. Mandy’s not leaving anyone behind.
Captured by the enemy on a scouting trip, Landon of the Badari has been pushed beyond his limits of sanity and strength by the Khagrish experiments and waits to die…until the human woman sets him free and takes him into the wilderness with her on a desperate trek to freedom. If he could only regain his memory, he’s sure there’s a sanctuary on the planet where his people could help them both.
As Mandy and Landon flee the pursuing Khagrish new challenges arise, including secrets from the past which could destroy the growing attraction between them. Difficult choices have to be made, putting Mandy’s life at risk and Landon discovers the Khagrish have left a lasting mark on his mind.
Will they reach the Badari sanctuary in time? Can their love survive Mandy’s revelations? Will the Alpha of the Badari give them a chance to be together or will he allow her to die when Landon risks everything to save his fated mate?

Wonky is it? I crack up every time I see that word. Veronica, week after week I so enjoy your snippets. Hugs always, dear friend.
It seems that duty is bred into the bones of the Khagrishi tech — and it’s a good thing Mandy is smart enough to use that to manipulate the woman.
She’s a smart one! It’s going to work. 🙂 Great writing, Jean! Best wishes on the new novella, too. 🙂
So, what’s going to happen next? Can’t wait to see.
Nice manipulation. Keeping her calm will save them all. Nice tease, Jean!
Clever trick! But will it work?
Duty is deep in the tech. Hope the calmness can overrule duty.
Tweeted.
Very clever indeed. Looking forward to the continuation next week. Knowing you, things won’t be as easy as they might seem. 🙂
Very smart to take advantage of her delirium rather than to plead for help! The tension in this scene, especially the last line, is terrific.
Thanks as always for visiting and commenting!
Mandy is very good at being a calming influence, both for the Khagrishi tech and her fellow prisoners. She seems a natural leader. Great snippet!
I felt like I wanted to stand up slowly with them as if I could help, too. lol Great scene.
Very clever. I think it’s going to work.
Despite being starved and dehydrated, Mandy can think on her feet. I admire that about her. Love the line about not being able to cry. Sure shows how dehydrated she is. Congrats on the new release.
Yikes! I believe in aliens and UFOs. I can’t even imagine being captured for tests. Your characters are brave.
Keep smiling,
Yawatta
