If you haven’t read any of my Badari Warriors series: Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens.

The excerpt, continuing on from where I stopped last week. On the building’s security vidscreen Mandy has seen a person strapped to a table in the medlab:

Sinking into the chair, she rolled the cool water bottle over her forehead and sighed. She’d have to go investigate or she’d never forgive herself, even if there was a high risk the Khagrish would show up. What if it had been her, restrained in the medlab? She could not leave someone else in those circumstances. Taking a deep breath, Mandy forced herself to approach the dead guard, who’d fallen between the console desk and the wall and died there, curled up. The weapons had already been looted so she double-checked the building floor plan at the side of his desk, ignoring the flashing red lights she assumed were dying calls for help from Khagrishi in their rooms or offices, now days old. Those callers were long past any help. The medlabs were in the wing opposite the cells, so she set out, wondering how much longer the automated systems and the power would continue to operate.

Passing through the main portion of the complex, she saw signs of hasty looting everywhere and at one point stopped to check out what was obviously a storeroom, where she grabbed ration bars and nutrient drinks and stuffed her pockets. The other humans had left a wealth of food and gear behind but she understood how driven they were by fears of the Khagrish rescue party arriving. She was too but she was realistic about her own physical weakness. Besides, she had a mission. Leave no one behind sounded damn good to her, worth running a risk.

landonThe blurb: When unexpected circumstances give her a chance to escape from an alien scientist’s lab after she’s been tortured, Mandy Rennegar knew she should run for the hills with the other prisoners. There’s one more special captive who hasn’t been freed, however, and she decides to risk everything to help him. Mandy’s not leaving anyone behind.

Captured by the enemy on a scouting trip, Landon of the Badari has been pushed beyond his limits of sanity and strength by the Khagrish experiments and waits to die…until the human woman sets him free and takes him into the wilderness with her on a desperate trek to freedom. If he could only regain his memory, he’s sure there’s a sanctuary on the planet where his people could help them both.

As Mandy and Landon flee the pursuing Khagrish new challenges arise, including secrets from the past which could destroy the growing attraction between them. Difficult choices have to be made, putting Mandy’s life at risk and Landon discovers the Khagrish have left a lasting mark on his mind.

Will they reach the Badari sanctuary in time? Can their love survive Mandy’s revelations? Will the Alpha of the Badari give them a chance to be together or will he allow her to die when Landon risks everything to save his fated mate?

  1. She is so brave to do it alone when the others already abandoned her. I hope she’ll fine someone good down there.

  2. As always, you have brought your character to life. I feel as though I should make room for her right here in my home. Hugs to you from me, dear friend. Take care, wash your hands and pray this will be over.

  3. Eek! I fear this is taking too long. But, I would do the same in her position. Glad she was able to find some food on her way.

  4. You can tell her character is strong and will go to many lengths to do what is right. Hoping to see her make it out of this situation in good spirits and by doing she she set out to do.

  5. Great scene to cement her character. Even though she knows the danger, even though she knows her own weakness, she also knows she can’t live with the idea of not trying to rescue the person in the medlab. One of those watershed moments when your integrity is put on the line and you have to choose who you really are. Excellent scene!

  6. Good for Mandy! Food and water, necessities for the hike away from that place. Love the no one left behind, even after the others did just that to her. I hope they regret it.

  7. True colors always come out in a crisis, and people often discover previously unknown strengths and talents. I hope Mandy is able to rescue everyone who’s still alive.

  8. Worth running the risk . . . that says everything about our smart, compassionate and brave heroine!

  9. Your character’s a good person, not wanting to leave anyone behind. I applaud her bravery and hope if I was in that situation I’d do the same.

    Keep smiling,
