Whose Side is He On? Snippet from RENNYR SciFi Romance Gladiator

Sharing from my second scifi romance gladiator novel RENNYR.

Jaine, the Female Main Character, as she and her fellow prisoners are being marched to their cell. She passes the cell where Rennyr, a genetically engineered warrior is held:

As she marched through yet another corridor, Jaine glanced into one of the cells she was were passing. An extremely large, well-built humanoid was inside. He looked up and their gazes locked for a moment before she blushed. The men behind her shoved her and she realized she’d stopped walking so she hastily moved on.

Their destination was a large cell at the end of the hall, big enough for the entire group. As she went through the doorway, she was handed two ration bars and a container of fruit flavored survival drink by a bored guard. Jaine headed for the corner of the room, taking an upper bunk. With her back to the wall she watched the others spread out while she wolfed one ration bar and slid the other into her pocket. Although the conditions here were better than in the hold of the pirate ship, she couldn’t let her guard down nor quell the unease in her gut.

Her thoughts going wild in a spiral of despair and fear, she took a deep breath. A vision of the large man in the individual cell came to her mind’s eye and she blushed again as she remembered how handsome he was, even under the grime. What she’d seen of him was impressive. A man built for fighting, who could survive in this horrible place.

I’m as far removed from being a killer like him as it’s possible to be.

Would he be among those sent to the arena with her and her companions?

The idea was repugnant. His eyes had been kind, deep brown, maybe even with a tiny bit of amber glow if her imagination hadn’t been playing tricks on her, being under all this stress. Jaine wished he was going to be on her side.

VS Note: So although they didn’t actually meet, Jaine and Rennyr have now encountered each other.

RENNYR (BADARI GLADIATORS SERIES BOOK 2) by Veronica Scott

Rennyr was a genetically engineered senior soldier in his Badari Warrior pack until one day he woke up on a strange planet naked, disoriented and about to be sold into the gladiator arena for the rest of his life. Unscrupulous guards faked his death in the lab where he was created and sold him into slavery in the galaxy’s hinterlands. Kill or be killed is the rule in his new life and a Badari never gives up. He’ll fight to stay alive until the Badari goddess sees fit to decree his death and release him from the wretched existence.

Jaine Mitchel of the Sectors was on her way to an exciting research internship until pirates seized the spaceship on which she was a passenger and took her to feature in a gladiator ‘death match’ in the galactic hinterlands. She has no hope of surviving in the arena until a man she only glimpsed in passing breaks out of his cell and saves her life, declaring her to be his fated mate. Given to Rennyr as his reward for winning the death match, Jaine must share a cell and a bed with the handsome, not human, gladiator and together they have to find a way to survive in this merciless world of violence and death. Their mutual attraction is off the charts. Falling in love is the easy part, finding a way to escape or even to remain together is the challenge. At any time their mutual owner could decide thumbs up or thumbs down on one or both of them, or sell them separately.

Their only hope is a mysterious gladiator master from offworld who may be coming to buy Rennyr. Will he take Jaine as well? Could Rennyr win freedom for them both if he does well enough in the arena? Badari Warriors claim their mates for life and Rennyr has no intention of losing Jaine…RENNYR is an 80K word novel and can be read as a standalone. KYDEN is the first book in the series.

  1. Nice snippet, Jean! She’s in a bad bad place but relies on her analytical assessments . . . except when it comes to our hero. She doesn’t quite know how to categorize him. Yet.

  2. Ah, will be interesting to see what happens when these two are in the ring together. They’ve obviously made an impact on each other from a simple glance, but things may be different when it comes down to survival. Great snippet!

  3. I’m glad I caught this week’s snippet! Fantastic way to encounter each other. I’m already fanning myself….or maybe that’s because of my covid fever, lol.

    • Feel better soon! Yes and I edited this snippet to make it less steamy because WeWriWa is a mixed audience, not all romance readers. He was, shall we say, without apparel when she saw him.
