I’m now taking snippets from my newly released novel STAR CRUISE STAR SONG.
The snippet from close to the beginning of the book where Addy was on her way to join her new spaceship. I’ve jumped ahead a little bit and Addy and Ryder are on the cruise ship Nebula Zephyr in orbit above:
She hated debarking from crowded vehicles but Ryder got her pack out of the overhead bin for her and guided her through the aisle and down the ramp and before she knew it she stood on the deck.
“Ensign Tryndall?” A uniformed crew member came up to her, giving Ryder a quick smile too. “I’m Kareen from HR and I’ve got your orientation material here. If you’ll excuse us, sir.”
To Addy’s disappointment, he gave her a mock salute and picked up his own gear. “I’ll be going. I’m sure you have a lot to do. Thanks again and don’t forget dinner tomorrow.”
And then he was gone, merging into the crowd of other passengers from their own shuttle and one which had landed right before theirs. Addy felt the loss of his presence keenly, surprising herself. She had a hard time concentrating on the instructions the other crew member was trying to provide. The person kept adding details and Addy was increasingly lost and not taking in more than one word in ten.
She became aware there was silence from the other woman. “Sorry, you seem distracted,” she said to Addy kindly. “Fight with your boyfriend?”
VS: More next week…
Addy Tryndall is a fresh graduate from a highly respected engineering college in the Sectors, on her way to a plum job on the Nebula Zephyr cruise ship. She knows she’ll be on probation but she’s determined to succeed and nothing is going to distract her.
Ryder McRhodes is a has-been interstellar rock star, on his way to reunite with his fellow band members to see if the lightning of mega success will strike twice for them. He isn’t sure he wants to be in the spotlight again and he hasn’t been able to write music since the band broke up.
Addy has secrets. Ryder needs a muse to unblock the creative flow…could her tightly guarded past be the answer to his problem? When the two are thrown together in an attempt to avoid the interstellar paparazzi he’s intrigued. She’s wary.
And someone is sabotaging systems on the Nebula Zephyr. Addy unwittingly finds herself in the middle of the situation while juggling her increasing attraction to Ryder and her challenges on the new job. Can she trust him with her secret? Or will he break her heart?
The danger on board comes ever closer to Addy as the cruise continues…
That would be a good reason to be distracted. I sense a “he’s not my boyfriend” moment coming. Nice snippet, Veronica.
It’ll be interesting to read her reply, will she go with honesty or as karen said the “he’s not my boyfriend” reply.
I can feel her confusion. She has to be so overwhelmed.
I’d be overwhelmed with a lot of instructions/details coming at me at once, too. Great snippet
I suspect she doesn’t usually get distracted like that.
Getting off any flight at a new place is disorienting enough – then having someone giving you instructions – the line about her hearing only 1 word in 10 is accurate. Tweeted.
I bet the question didn’t help her confusion, either?
I agree with the comments about a “not my boyfriend” moment coming up. That kind of brain-overload confusion is real and humbling too. Good snippet!
That last line was a little …. rude? Thoughtless?
