Why I Wrote STAR CRUISE IDOL’S CURSE with Excerpt

The events in STAR CRUISE: IDOL’S CURSE, now available separately since the anthology is over, takes place on my interstellar luxury cruise liner, the Nebula Zephyr. I always have so much fun revisiting my ship and having new adventures there.

This time my jumping off place for the plot was legends about bad luck hitting tourists who steal rocks from certain locales.

bad luck hot rocks coverI’ve always been fascinated by these myths and the tales of bad luck people believe they incur if they ‘steal’ a rock from a certain place. (And when I was researching this topic, I discovered there are various tourist spots where this belief flourishes, not just in Hawaii. The Petrified Forest in northern Arizona is another area where people frantically return rocks to the park after thinking their illicit souvenir has brought them bad luck.) I wanted to be sure I wasn’t doing cultural appropriation if I took this basic concept for my story, so I was relieved to find the modern legend arises in various places and is believed to have been begun in one locale by a tour bus driver who didn’t want volcanic ash and grit from purloined chunks off the beach or mountain messing up his vehicles. Another variation on the story says because it’s against the law to remove anything from a national park, a ranger invented the story to add an additional layer of ‘scariness’ to deter would-be souvenir hunters.

One of the more interesting pieces of research I did was reading Bad Luck Hot Rocks by Ryan Thompson, dealing with the issue as it relates to the Petrified Forest in northern Arizona.

Of  course since I’m writing science fiction, I then took the entire topic a step further and gave my ‘rock’ some scary attributes, the ability to do real harm and a bit of carving to justify referring to an idol’s curse in the title.

It seemed to me the idea of tourists and souvenirs fit in very nicely with my luxury cruise ship, and then since an entire deck of the ship is devoted to recreating a beach from the planet Tahumaroa Two, it was logical for the rock or ‘idol’ in question in my story to have come from that planet and need to go back there. This led me to ponder who in the crew would be likely to become involved with returning a rock and I decided it was time for the Cruise Director, Juli Shaeffer, to get her story. She’s been referenced many times in other STAR CRUISE stories but we really never met her.  I got to do all kinds of fun research into what exactly a cruise director does on Earth and then embellish and enhance for my starship.

Veronica Scott - Charrli

Charrli, drawn by ADRIAN

My next challenge was how to put a pet front and center in the story (since this was originally written for a Pets in Space anthology), and to engage them in a meaningful fashion with the action. I decided Juli and Third Officer Steve Aureli had unfinished romantic business, and that Steve has an elderly aunt traveling aboard this particular cruise. Every time I thought about the character of Aunt Dian, I saw one of the Gabor sisters in my head, dressed in pink and a froufrou feather boa, clutching a tiny dog. (The Gabors were famous actresses in their day and Eva from the ‘Green Acres’ TV show is kind of who I was going for, although ZsaZsa did play Queen of Outer space once in a movie.)  Of course Dian and Charrli, her dog, have a lot more backstory and aren’t what they seem on the surface. For one thing, they’re veterans of the Sectors Special Forces Z Corps, which means Charrli is very smart and telepathic with Dian. Charrli bonds with Juli and has an affinity for the rock or idol of the novel’s title.

Then I let the events unfold from there!

The blurb: An unusual bequest….

Juli Shaeffer, the Nebula Zephyr’s cruise director, receives a mysterious bequest from the estate of a longtime passenger – a lump of rock taken from a reef on the planet Tahumaroa. Legend states anyone who steals from the ocean gods will be cursed. The passenger’s will requests the rock be returned to the beach so his heirs won’t be affected by the bad luck he believed he’d incurred. Juli doesn’t believe in superstitions and she agrees to carry out this small favor on the ship’s next stop at the planet in question.

Until the rock disappears from her office…

When the rock disappears and reappears in various locations around the ship, and seems connected to a steadily escalating series of mishaps, Juli turns to Third Officer Steve Aureli as the only one she feels she can trust. Along with Steve and his elderly Aunt Dian – a passenger aboard the Nebula Zephyr for this cruise – she investigates the strange series of malfunctions plaguing the interstellar luxury liner. Steve and Juli enlist his Aunt Dian’s dog, Charrli, a retired Sectors Z Corps canine, to help them track the missing rock as it moves about the ship.

Juli and Steve must find the rock, hang onto it and transport it to the planet’s surface, before the alien idol’s curse turns deadly. The attraction between the two of them grows as the threat to Juli becomes more and more focused. Can she carry out her task while he keeps her safe from the alien curse? Will the capricious alien idol bring them good fortune…or disaster?

This is a re-release of the 42,000+ word novel I included in the Pets in Space® 4 anthology, which is no longer available. No revisions or additions have been made to the original novel for this re-release. I have also now included a 4,000 word prequel story Butterfly Hair, in which the diva Azlaya arrives on board the Nebula Zephyr. This short story was a free reader magnet available only in the time before the anthology was originally published.

The excerpt:

“I’m Steve’s Aunt Dian,” said the lady in the front seat, swiveling to study Juli. She extended her gloved hand.

Juli tried not to stare. Dian was elderly but wearing full, expertly applied makeup and her syntho hair was coiffed into a confection of pink and blond a trideo star might admire, accented with a glittery star-shaped barrette. Her pink and cream woven suit was by a high end fashion designer, or else a very good knockoff and she presented an altogether glamorous and retro picture. This is practical, stoic Steve’s aunt?  Juli detected no family resemblance although of course that didn’t mean much. “I’m so happy to meet you and glad you’ll be sailing with us.”

Next instant, a barking ball of golden brown fur sailed over the seat, landing in Juli’s lap with a thud. With a startled scream she tried to fend off the pet, which fortunately seemed intent on getting into her purse, rather than actually attacking her personally.

“Charrli, don’t be rude,” said Dian, snapping her fingers in annoyance. “No one asked you to do a search and destroy mission on Juli’s belongings. Get back here where you belong.”

Hand on the controls, Steve studied Juli. “Do you have a snack in your purse?” he asked. “Charrli’s a real chow hound.”

“What an inelegant way to describe my champion purebred miniature Deskaza dog.” Despite her offended protest, his elderly relative didn’t sound too offended. “I’ll have you know they’re a rare breed.” She snapped her fingers again and the doglike creature made one final attempt to open Juli’s purse before obeying his mistress’s command and returning to the front seat with a sniff. “I apologize for Charrli,” Dian said, cuddling him close so all Juli could see were the tips of his triangular ears and his intense brown eyes peering at her over his owner’s shoulder. “Although I must say you and he are obviously going to be great friends while we’re on your ship.”

Apparently satisfied peace had been restored, Steve put the car smoothly into the traffic flow.

“There’s nothing in my purse attractive to a dog,” Juli said. She reached in with both hands and fished out the scarf-wrapped box holding the rock. “Maybe he likes the smell of the straw in this old basket?”

Charrli wiggled his hindquarters, escaping his mistress’s hold and crouched beside Dian on the seat, growling. His ears flared out wide and Juli tried not to laugh because he really was adorable despite his best efforts to act menacing.

“What is that?” Steve asked, eyes wide as he took in the dilapidated, colorful container. “A souvenir?”

“Someone’s souvenir, not mine.” With a chuckle she put the package away again. “And not from this planet. It was a passenger’s good luck charm, I gather, until it started bringing him bad luck. Or so the story goes. The Line’s been asked to return the thing to Tahumaroa Two and I’m the stuckee.”

“Why doesn’t the owner take it himself?” Steve navigated through the traffic effortlessly but of course he was the Nebula Zephyr’s chief pilot and a former military fighter jockey so even rush hour on an alien planet didn’t faze him.

“He’s dead.”

Last snippet from STAR CRUISE: TIME LOOP,  which is in the Pets in Space 6 anthology. Next week I’m switching to my new release KYDEN: BADARI GLADIATORS SERIES BOOK ONE (details below excerpt).

Excerpt: I’ve jumped ahead to the end of the first time Raelyn lives through the day and then the first morning when she awakens:

She was buffeted by a force so powerful she couldn’t stand, couldn’t think, couldn’t breathe—heat enveloped her, light blinded her…and the Nebula Zephyr blew up. There was no time for a final thought…

CHAPTER THREE

Five perfectly modulated crystalline notes, designed to bring the deepest sleeper to consciousness with no disruption…

With a gasp Raelyn sat upright, heart pounding. Hand on her chest where she felt her heart beating way too fast, she took a deep breath and stared wildly around her cabin. Eyn chittered at her from a precarious perch atop the door frame, evidently frightened by her dramatic awakening.

“Oh thank the Lords of Space, I must have been dreaming,” she said, collapsing into her pillows. “What a nightmare!”

Carefully she coaxed Eyn to come sit on her arm, which he did eventually and then she got up to have her morning synthcaff and get ready for the day. As she went past the table she saw her carryall was open and various items were strewn around the surface.

“You’ve been searching for treasures again, haven’t you?” she said to the pet, stroking his head gently. “Sorry, nothing for you this trip.”

Raelyn took one more step and stopped, pivoting to survey the mess on the table again. Where was the glass globe? She pushed aside the various items without finding what she sought and knelt carefully on the deck to search under the table, also to no avail. “I did buy the damn thing, didn’t I? I know I did. Of course in my dream you broke it and I had to pay Maeve to decontaminate because of the weird smelling air inside it.”

Eyn hopped from her shoulder and made a circle on the table where Raelyn had expected the glass ornament to be. He uttered small anxious trills and seemed to be looking for something. Watching the moyed, she got goosebumps but shook them off.

Realizing she was going to be late, Raelyn rose to her feet and proceeded into the bathroom but the issue of the globe bothered her. She was positive she’d paid the vendor twenty credits but where was the damn ornament? Had there been sleight of hand? Or a pickpocket? But why would anyone steal a quaint glass ornament? “Because for sure it wasn’t any Ancient Observer relic,” she told Eyn. “Lucky for you, since you broke it. Well, only in my dream apparently.”

VS: I hate to tell her but this is not a dream or a drill. If you’re curious to know more, the book is avaiable on all major ebook platforms!

The book blurb:

Raelyn Cantorini, senior stewardess on the interstellar cruise ship Nebula Zephyr thinks the alien artifact she bought on the last planet the ship visited was just a pretty glass orb…until her pet Eyn knocked the ornament off a table, shattering it and sending her into an infinitely repeating time loop.

Stuck reliving the same day over and over, Raelyn has only hours to try to save the ship and everyone on board from dying in a terrible catastrophe. As she tries to solve the mystery of what happens to the ship right before midnight each time the day repeats, Raelyn meets Kev Stevens, the former Special Forces soldier turned actor and finds herself falling in love with him. Each time the day repeats, she learns more about him while he has no memory of her. Can she persuade him they’ve met before? Will he trust her enough to help stop the Nebula Zephyr’s destruction?

And if they do save the ship, will that reset time for Raelyn?

***********NEW RELEASE!!!***************************************************************

KYDEN: BADARI GLADIATORS SERIES BOOK ONE by Veronica Scott

Kyden is the top ranked gladiator in the Five Systems but he’s hardly there by choice. Unscrupulous guards faked his death in the lab where he was created and sold him into slavery in the galaxy’s hinterlands. He has no idea where his home is or how many years have passed since he was condemned to a life of endless combat. Kill or be killed is the rule and a Badari never gives up. He’ll fight to stay alive until the Badari goddess sees fit to decree his death.

Elara Vasclavian is the daughter of a senator, as far removed from the life of a gladiator as a noblewoman can be until through the machinations of a political enemy, she ends up in terrible jeopardy. Abducted and given to a group of drunken gladiators for their amusement the night before the games, Elara vows to put up a fight but there’s no real hope of saving herself. Until Kyden steps in, responding to the goddess’s commandment to protect those who are smaller and weaker. And discovers she’s his fated mate.

Rescued, Elara returns to her life of privilege but she can’t forget the man who saved her life. The gulf between their places in the Five Systems is unbridgeable, no matter how much Kyden longs for even a glimpse of her in the arena audience. No matter how much she feels the pull to be by his side. As matters stand, they cannot be together…Or can they?

KYDEN is the first book in a new series, spun off from my ongoing Badari Warriors series. Kyden is a Generation Five Badari whereas the main characters in the long running series are from a later time and are Generation Eight. This new series stands alone and you don’t have to have read any of the other books to enjoy this one. I couldn’t resist the temptation to tell a few other Badari stories, set in the galaxy’s Hinterlands, and who can resist gladiators?

Nothing But Air Weekend Writing Warriors

Here’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

May be edited a bit from published version.

I’ve switched to my new release STAR CRUISE: TIME LOOP,  which is in the Pets in Space 6 anthology.

Excerpt: From the beginning of the novella. I’ve skipped ahead a bit from last week and Raelyn and her pet are back on the ship, with the odd glass bauble. She was warning Eyn not to push the orb off the table…

She hadn’t even finished her sentence when the moyed ducked, trying to avoid her and as he moved with his usual sudden speed, the ornament rolled in the opposite direction, plummeting to the deck. The cabin was carpeted but as if in slow motion Raelyn saw the bubble land on a stack of other items from her shopping trip and shatter into dozens of pieces.

A burst of oddly scented air struck her, smelling of hot desert and vanilla and other pleasant things she couldn’t place. For a moment she was dizzier than ever and actually staggered a step or two as the room whirled around her. Chirping, Eyn jumped onto her arm and scurried to her shoulder, rubbing his head against her chin.

“I’m fine but that piece of old glass isn’t. Twenty credits, totally wasted. When will I learn not to give in to impulses? Maeve,” she said, addressing the Ship’s AI, “Can you have a robo clean this up? I’m running late today.”

“Of course, although if decontamination is required there will be a small charge to your account.”

“Fine, although I don’t think there’s any issue with a chemical spill. There was nothing but air inside.” She sat Eyn on top of his shell, stepped carefully around the mess and rushed into the bathroom. It’d be worth a credit or two not to have to start her day cleaning up a mess.

VS: So Raelyn thinks it’s a mere minor problem of a mess and a few lost credits but….many more events will unfold…there’ll be one or two more excerpts from this book but then I’ll have a new release and we’ll move on. You can get the story in the Pets in Space 6 anthology now though!

The Alien Turtle Is Naughty Snippet from STAR CRUISE TIME LOOP “Groundhog Day in Space”

Eyn the alien turtle (or moyed)

May be edited a bit from published version.

From  STAR CRUISE: TIME LOOP, my “Groundhog Day in space story)

Excerpt: From the beginning of the novella.  Raelyn and her pet are back on the ship, with the odd glass bauble that may or may not be an ancient alien artifact. Her alarm wakes her…

Five perfectly modulated crystalline notes, designed to bring the deepest sleeper to consciousness with no disruption…

In the morning, Raelyn ignored the gentle chimes from the Ship’s Artificial Intelligence even though she’d selected the sound of the alarm specifically. In a futile effort to deny reality she tried to stay in bed. Her head ached from overindulging a bit at the crew party the night before. She asked the Ship for headclear and once the inject popped up on the bedside table, promptly took the full dosage. As the ache in her temples stopped pounding, and her thinking became clearer, she took a look at the time and swore.

“Damn it, I’m going to be late.”

Rising to her feet, she was a bit dizzy but headed for the bathroom. As she went she noticed her carryall was open and various items were strewn around the table. “You’ve been busy and naughty,” she said to Eyn, clucking her tongue. The moyed loved glittering objects and was known to haul small things away to secret caches.

Eyn was standing with his front paws on the odd glass bubble she’d bought on impulse at the end of the trip. He was staring fixedly into the misty center and his tongue flickered in and out as if he was trying to taste the captured air inside. Disconcerted by how intent her pet was, Raelyn reached for him. “You’ve seen your reflection before for star’s sake. Be careful or you’ll push it off—”

VS: So what do we think will happen next?

NOTE: The turtle was a tribute to my brother, who has always had pet turtles and who does turtle rescues where he lives today.

Don’t Drop the Orb Weekend Writing Warriors

Here’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

May be edited a bit from published version.

I’ve switched to my upcoming new release STAR CRUISE: TIME LOOP,  which is in the Pets in Space 6 anthology, releasing October 5th.

Excerpt: From the beginning of the novella, continuing on from last week when a glass bauble at a vendor’s stall caught Raelyn’s eye:

She was surprised to feel warmth against her palm rather than the cool surface of a glass object but it had been in the sun. Gazing into the orb, she saw what looked like iridescent mist floating. Everything about the object was pleasing and she thought maybe she’d keep it for herself. “Ten credits,” she said.

A passerby in a hurry jogged her elbow and she nearly dropped the glass knickknack. Juggling it, she managed to avoid the disaster.

The seller hissed between jagged, discolored teeth. “Careful, honored visitor. Bad things will happen if the orb shatters.”

“I’d have to pay you for nothing, you mean,” she said in good humor. Digging in her purse, she came up with a ten credit token. This planet dealt in metal money, which was a charming throwback and a bit inconvenient.

“Twenty.”

Oh no, now she wants to bargain. Frustrated at being drawn into the negotiation she’d hoped to avoid, Raelyn ground her teeth, loathing the idea of leaving a unique find behind.

“Hey, Cantorini, we’re leaving.” The shouted admonition came from one of the Nebula Zephyr’s other stewards. He stood beside the ground shuttle, holding the door and gesturing to her urgently. “The captain said not to be late getting back to the ship, remember?”

Pets in Space 6 Authors Share Story Inspirations

Note: This post first appeared on the AMAZING STORIES MAGAZINE blog.

As one of the original co-founders of the Pets in Space® science fiction romance anthology, I’m happy to announce the collection is back with all new stories for a new year of adventures!

I took the opportunity to interview the authors about their pets and the inspiration for their stories, as well as what is next for them in their writing career and what books are on their To Be Read list. I always think it’s amazing fun to give a group of writers the same story prompt – pets in space – and then sit back and wait to see what a wide variety of tales get written.

ESCAPE FROM NOVA NINE by Carol Van Natta, who also managed and edited this year’s anthology:

Escape from Nova Nine is part of my Central Galactic Concordance space opera series. There’s a big damn story arc going on, but this story is a side trip to a forgotten corner of the galaxy. Yes, galaxies have corners.

The story features a space pirate clanswoman, Julke, who has vital information for her people. And Zade, a jack-of-all-trades spacer with enemies hot on his afterburner. Trouble is, they’re both prisoners in a secret mine on a hidden asteroid. No one has ever escaped, but Julke and Zade aren’t going to let that stop them. And they have unexpected allies: space griffins.

Two sparks came together to create this story. First, I’ve wanted the chance to introduce the secretive Volksstam, otherwise known as the pirate clan. People in the settled worlds romanticize them. The military would like to eradicate them. Space hijackers think of them as the competition. The actual people are much more interesting.

And second, I saw an educational program about crows. They’re really clever, social, and learn from each other. In my universe, designers create genetically engineered pets for the wealthy. In the case of griffins, they modeled cute, four-legged birds to look like miniature griffins from Western mythology. No one knows how they got to the asteroid mine or why they’ve flourished in the harsh and lethal environment. But they might just be the key to what Julke and Zade need most: escape from Nova Nine.

Next for me is Spark Transform, the long-awaited next book in the big story arc mentioned above.

ESCAPING KORTH, Kyndra Hatch

What was the inspiration for my story? Honestly? The Pets In Space® idea itself was the inspiration. I wanted to be a part of Pets In Space so badly that the organizers decided to give me a chance in Pets In Space 3. With their guidance, I learned how to write a story worthy of the franchise. Now, here I am in my fourth Pets In Space anthology and I’m still inspired by the whole ‘alien pets bring couple together in a science fiction romance setting’ idea. I have had so much fun coming up with the moghas and molks, and now skyders. My story in Pets In Space 6, Escaping Korth, is the third book in the Pets In Space inspired ‘Before The Fall’ series. There is also a fourth book, After The Fall, which was the story in Pets In Space 3 that started it all. I plan to write 9 books in all in The Fall Universe that will span three series; Before The Fall, After The Fall, and Beyond The Fall. I am eternally grateful to be a part of Pets In Space. It is the catalyst for my author career and continues to be my inspiration and motivation as a writer.

TRADE SECRETS by Cassandra Chandler

I’m so excited to share Trade Secrets, book 15 of my popular Department of Homeworld Security series, with readers in Pets in Space® 6! When I was given the opportunity to participate in this amazing anthology again, I jumped at the chance. The perfect story was right in front of me—sharing the secret behind the “space kittens” that have appeared in several of my previous stories.

Of the three kittens, Bandit stood out as the purrfect candidate for my pet in the anthology. I can’t wait for readers to learn the truth behind these super-smart cuties, as well as getting to know them better as a result of their secret!

I also had a scene floating around in my head about what a technologically advanced Vegan might do if it met one of the many explorer robots Earthlings have sent to Mars—and what might happen if their interaction was recorded by a curious Earthling. Adding these together and throwing in a Coalition pilot who was waiting for his Happy Ever After, and Trade Secrets was born!

With fifteen books in the series already, there’s a lot to explore in these quirky, optimistic novellas. I plan to keep moving the Homeworld stories forward and have expanded the universe with a spin-off series called Cygnian 7. Everything connects in this universe, so be sure to check out Trade Secrets so you don’t miss out!

I’m also excited that now I get to read Cara Bristol’s Kiss of Fyre series and S.E. Smith’s The Dark Prince’s Prize as soon as it comes out.

METAMORPHOSIS by Deborah A. Bailey

I’d had the idea for my novella, Metamorphosis, for a few years. But I wasn’t sure if the story would be a standalone so if it would be part of another series. Since I wasn’t quite sure what it was going to be, I took some notes and set it aside. When I came up with the idea for the portal worlds, things fell into place. This story could be connected to other stories instead of focusing on one set of characters for each book. So, I decided that this story could go into some background of the Alchemists who monitor the portals. It gave me a way to tell the story I already had in mind, in addition to adding a pet for the hero. The heroine is part of the Alchemist world, and the hero is from one of the portal worlds. We get to see the contrast in cultures and some of the magic and science that unites them.

This novella Is part of the Worlds of Fire series which is about different worlds that are connected by portals. It will be the first book in the series with another book coming soon.

The next book in the series, Blood Red Moon, is in edits. I have ideas for other books in the series and perhaps a standalone book or two.

SURI’S SURE THING by S. J. Pajonas

When I was asked to write for Pets in Space®, I immediately thought of the world I built in the Nogiku Series where animals and people pair up with the aid of an animal translation chip. I thought this would be a fun way to introduce new readers to the universe I had already built. I have always included animals in my stories, and I was looking forward to writing about them again. Then I watched ‘Bridgerton’, and I was inspired by the large family and how every one of the siblings had their own story. That gave me a great idea! I would create a large family with plenty of sisters to write about. Each story would be about one sister finding love and would also be about their family. I started with the oldest sister, Suri, and I plan to write about Myra, Tilli, Winta, Demi, and Rosa too. I’ve already begun writing on Myra’s story!

Suri’s Sure Thing is the first book in a new sci-fi romance series. In the Kimura Sisters Series, we’ll follow each of the Kimura sisters and their paired pets as they fix past mistakes, learn independence from their overbearing father, and find love along the way. I am now working on the next book of the Kimura Sisters Series, Myra’s Big Mistake, and I’m also working on Book 2 of the Amagi Series. I hope to have them both published in 2022.

STRANDED ON GRZBT by Melisse Aires

‘Star Wars, A New Hope’ hit the theaters when I was in college. I spent that summer in Kalispell, MT, a small resort town, at the family home. My younger brother was home, too, and we both loved scifi and fantasy books, so we saw the movie. We agreed it was the best movie ever, and dragged the whole family to it. Later in the summer the theater dropped the price to fifty cents, so we went many, many evenings. I never got tired of it.

Last winter hubby and I rewatched all the Star Wars movies and I thought it would be fun to write in a many-aliens universe, instead of an all-humanoid universe. I thought an alien abduction romance where the abductors were so gross no one could romance them, might be fun. I had stinky worms do the abducting in Stranded on Grzbt. I also wanted to write something that didn’t really veer into grim or violent, but still had adventure. And  a sweet little pet! Soon Mimi meets the handsome, humanoid Kyre with the flashing eyes. She knows a good alien when she sees one!

Stranded on Grzbt is the first book in a new romance series, Far Stars. Mimi, Hannah, Acacia and a young teen named Chloe were abducted at the same time. I want a scifi romance about each of the abducted women. You might note that straight-laced Hannah meets a wild and crazy (but hot) scientist in the final scenes of Stranded on Grzbt. Her crazy new life is about to get insane.

My writing plans are still in the works, just delayed due to a health situation. Melisse and wildfire smoke are incompatible! But this will pass and I’ll be back. I have a Diaspora Worlds romance and a Cyborg Nations book both in the works. One might be ready toward the end of this year, or next winter.

THE CYBORG WITH NO NAME by Honey Phillips

The Cyborg with No Name is part of the Cyborgs on Mars series, but it actually takes place before the other books. There has been a consistent thread throughout the books about the cybernetic horses, and the fact that they seem to be much more than they appear. I wanted to explore that more closely and the logical place to start was with the creator, Dr. Rose Abbott. So what does an ethical scientist do when she sees those hints of sentience? In Rose’s case, she chooses to leave the corporation which chooses to ignore it. But of course, as a scientist, she can’t stop exploring the possibilities and thus Otis is born – a small canine built with the limited resources available to her. An encounter with one of her horses and a wounded cyborg provide some of the answers she is seeking.

What’s next for me: Later this month, I am releasing another book in my Alien Abduction series and in November, another book in the Treasured by the Alien series. These are two of my favorite series and I revisit them every year. I’m also working on a holiday story for December and a surprise for the end of the year. It’s going to be a busy few months!

On my TBR list: Way too many to name – I call it my TBR mountain! I am looking forward to reading all of the other Pets in Space stories, of course! And I’m eagerly waiting for the third book in Tiffany Roberts’s Spider’s Mate trilogy before diving into that. And following along with Bex McLynn’s web serial. And the list goes on…

SEE HOW THEY RUN by JC Hay

The mice in my story started, as a lot of things do for me, from research. In this case, knowing I had a story that would be set in a majority of microgravity environments, I had started researching how various animals responded to being in near-weightlessness and what research had been done on the impact. In the process, I found an article that described mice as “creating a new game” by expanding their runs to include three dimensions (up one wall, over the ceiling, down the other wall, and back) while being kept on board the ISS. After they confirmed it wasn’t a stress response—something April also wonders about in the story—they realized the mice had incorporated the behavior into their interactions.

It sounded so adorable I had to include it in the book, and that meant mice needed to be me pet. I went with three because lab mice tend to form triads instead of pairs (domestic mice tend to pair up), and built a lot on my own experiences with pet rodents—mice and rats of course, but also hamsters and gerbils. They have a surprising amount of character for such small creatures, and I tried hard to translate their differences to the page.

I have two projects going right now. In my Smugglers universe, I’m finally getting around to hashing out the complex relationship between Captain Barnes, Pilot Minami Hicks, and First Mate Zion Sanderson. The three of them spend a lot of time together, and are each as different as night and day, but for some reason keep getting pulled into each other’s orbits.

I’m also working on a bit of a vanity project – I’ve wanted to write a wolf shifter book for a while, and had developed what I hope is an interesting mythology for the world. It’s been a fun change of pace to right what is effectively contemporary after all the science fiction, and we’ll see where it goes.

My TBR is so big, it might as well have its own ZIP code at this point! Pulling a few of the ones from the very top (or which will be on top when they release) – I’m absolutely looking forward to Jesse Mihalik’s Hunt The Stars when it comes out in February (which feels like forever away). I finally have time to get around to Denali Day’s Hollen the Soulless, which I’ve heard nothing but good about and can’t wait to dig into. And lastly there’s Starbreaker from Amanda Bouchet, which is the sequel to Nightchaser and one I’m looking forward to making some time for.

THE THUNDER EGG by Greta van der Rol

My Pets in Space story started as an opening scene probably a year ago. I was doing the writer’s equivalent of doodling, playing around with ideas. I started off with a female freighter captain walking back to her ship after making a delivery. She was regretting taking the short cut to the spaceport through the oldest, seediest section of Old Port as one of the frequent fogs descends. It’s a haven for thugs and muggers and she was grateful for the pistol in her pocket.

That looked promising, so I asked the Muse what happened next. “Ah,” said the Muse, “As she walked, something hit her chest.”

“But what hit her?” I asked the Muse.

“Let’s see. What about some sort of animal? It can fly but it isn’t a bird or a bat. Something cute and alien.”

“But what is it?” I wailed. “Where does it come from?”

The Muse wasn’t happy. “Come on. You’re a writer. Work it out for yourself. She’s – I don’t know – a cross between a Pern dragon and a pterodactyl.” Then she flounced off for a Bex and a lie-down, but flung over her shoulder, “But it’s small.”

I took it from there and ended up with little Neyru’s unexpected adventure. By the end of the story you’ll know what Neyru is and where she comes from. The story is set in my Dryden Universe but it is absolutely stand-alone, with all new characters.

For my next book I’m working on a new Dryden Universe story called The Search for the Crimson Lady. It’s about a mysterious spaceship (the Crimson Lady) that disappeared a century ago. An artefact is found, leading to a search. Yes, there’s a romance – between the finder of the artefact and the captain of the ship she hires to do the searching.

And next on my reading list is Michelle Diener’s Wave Rider. I love oceans and whales so deep sea leviathans on a watery moon pushed my buttons. I’m looking forward to it.

‘Eyn’ – my alien turtle

STAR CRUISE TIME LOOP by Veronica Scott

I’ve always loved the ‘Groundhog Day’ type movies and novels, where a character is caught in a time loop and has to figure out why the day is repeating itself and what they can do to resolve the problems which arise. Very serious problems in this novella! So this year I decided to write my own story in the genre but as a science fiction romance. My pet for this star cruise adventure is an alien form of turtle, inspired by my brother and his lifelong love of terrestrial turtles as pets.

The novella is the latest in my Star Cruise Series, set aboard a luxury interstellar cruise liner.

I’m currently working on the first book of a new SFR series, entitled Kyden and hope to release that by the end of Ocotber. Next up will be another book in my Badari Warriors SFR series.

My To Be Read list is huge but I think the next one I’ll be reading is Anna Carven’s latest Darkstar Mercenaries novel, Hyperspeed Dreams.

The anthology also includes BEHR’S REBEL Marastin Dow Book 2 by S.E. Smith

Introducing My Newest Pet in Space Eyn the Alien Turtle

This is the sixth year of the award winning, best selling Pats in Space scifi romance anthology, which is done to benefit Hero Dogs, a nonprofit organization providing service dogs to veterans and first responders in need. The anthology is up for pre-order now and releases OCT 5.

Some years the story idea comes first for me and other years the pet concept is first and drives the story. This year they arrived together, which made things easy. My family has always enjoyed turtles as pets. We’ve had a lot of the common green turtles and many red-eared sliders over the years. My brother is especially keen on turtles and not only has several as pets, he also does rescues and has hand raised baby snapping turtles until they were old enough to be re-released into the wild. I decided to make my space pet a turtle this year in honor of my brother, who is one of my most devoted readers and fans.

Eyn is an alien turtle of course and he can and does leave his shell most days. I always felt a bit sorry for terrestrial turtles that they had to carry their shell around all the time and couldn’t go out  unencumbered at least occasionally so Eyn has that freedom. He returns to his shell nightly and can close it up tight, and while he sleeps the biological mechanisms in the shell structure replenish his energy. He belongs to Raelyn, my heroine, who is a senior stewardess on board the Nebula Zephyr interstellar luxury cruise liner and is also a symbol of her home world and its belief system.

He can also function as a piece of living jewelry for her. Eyn not only sets off the events in the story, he’s also quite involved in dealing with bad guys along the way to the plot’s resolution and the Happy Ever After ending. It’s a fun challenge to me each year to ensure the pet is more than just a pretty set decoration but is also important to the events. I think Eyn manages all of that quite nicely although he’ll probably need a nap in that shell by the end of the novel.

Did I mention he has three eyes?

Of course we see other members of the ship’s crew from past stories but this can be read as a standalone.

VS: Here’s the blurb for STAR CRUISE: OUTBREAK:

She saved countless soldiers in the wars … but does she have the weapons to fight an outbreak?

Dr. Emily Shane, veteran of the interstellar Sector Wars, is known as “The Angel of Fantalar” for her bravery under fire as a medic. However, the doctor has her own war wounds–severe PTSD and guilt over those she failed to save.

Persuaded to fill a seemingly frivolous berth as ship’s doctor on the huge and luxurious interstellar cruise liner Nebula Zephyr, she finds the job brings unexpected perks–a luxe beach deck with water imported from Tahumaroa II, and Security Officer Jake Dilon, a fellow veteran who heats her up like a tropical sun.

However, Emily soon learns she and Jake didn’t leave all peril behind in the war. A mysterious illness aboard the Zephyr begins to claim victim after victim…and they must race against time and space to find the cause and a cure. Trapped on a ship no spaceport will allow to dock, their efforts are complicated by a temperamental princess and a terrorist–one who won’t hesitate to take down any being in the way of his target. If anyone’s left when the disease is through with them…

Sharing excerpts from STAR CRUISE: RETURN VOYAGE, my full length novel in the Pets In Space 5 anthology for 2020! My next Badari Warriors novel JAMOKAN is in edits now but with the holidays coming, not sure exactly when I’ll release it. Hopefully in the next two weeks! So probably only another one or two snippets more from this current book.

The excerpt: Gianna was harassed by a conspiracy theorist passenger. Trevor arrives after the incident is over.

“He’s not the most unbalanced conspiracy theorist I’ve ever met, let me put it that way. Verlaine was close to biting him and then I’d have been in trouble with the captain. And the jerk would have sued me no doubt. I only want him and any others like him to leave me alone,” Gianna said.

“Oh we can definitely arrange that.” Trevor sounded grim and she imagined the lieutenant carting Mr. Lanloring off to the brig. Surely the ship had a brig? “I’m not leaving you alone again, although I’m puzzled why you didn’t call me if you wanted to go out. The damn reports can wait. The queues of administrative work have waited weeks already. I was only tackling them to fill in my shift while you were supposed to be resting in your cabin.”

“I wanted to window shop and I didn’t want to bore you,” Gianna said as they proceeded toward her cabin. She raised the cream-and-blue shopping bag to show him. “There was an item I wanted to see at one of the shops we passed earlier today. Really, it was all fine. Verlaine enjoyed the outing, we had a nice chat with Juli, I spent lots of credits and had fun.”

He opened the suite portal for her and allowed her to walk past him. As he entered the room and saw the stack of shoe boxes which the ship’s robos must have delivered earlier, Trevor whistled and raised one eyebrow. “I guess you did have fun.”

Sharing excerpts from STAR CRUISE: RETURN VOYAGE, my full length novel in the Pets In Space 5 anthology for 2020!

The excerpt: I’ve skipped ahead again and Gianna has gone to do some shopping on the Level A promenade deck without Trevor. She is with Juli, the ship’s Cruise Director when she runs into a conspiracy theorist with wild ideas about the wreck she survived as a child.

Verlaine growled and pushed in front of her.

There was no other warning as an excited man rushed up to her. “It is you! Gianna Nadenoft! I can’t believe my luck—we need to talk.” He stuck his hand out, stepping back a little gingerly as Verlaine bared his fangs. “Jerrd Lanloring, at your service. You’ve probably seen my trideo documentary about the wreck? Or maybe the recent—”

Juli was doing her best to run interference and get between the other passenger and Gianna. “Sir, please, it’s obvious Ms. Nadenoft has no interest in speaking with you so if you could move along.”

Lowering his voice and stepping around Juli, although keeping what he probably assumed was a safe distance from Verlaine, Lanloring babbled on, spitting in his excitement. “Have you seen the struts in the landing bay? If those stamped serial numbers aren’t proof of everything I’ve ever said, I don’t know what is. Listen, I’ve sent you message after message—”

Gianna drew herself to her full height and held up one hand imperiously. “I have nothing to say to you. I was three, my mother died, my father almost died, I barely remember anything about the experience and I have no knowledge which could help you with your demented theories. Please don’t bother me again.” With that she walked away, Verlaine maneuvering every few steps to check whether Lanloring was following.

Juli remained behind for a moment, lecturing the man and then rushed to catch up.“I’m so sorry. We’ll make sure he doesn’t get near you for the rest of the cruise.”

VS Note: Trevor isn’t going to be happy she went out of her cabin without notifying him…
