The excerpt – Juli has gone to a lawyer’s office on the planet to pick up an item at the request of her shipping line. This will fulfill a deceased passenger’s dying wish.:

Juli stared as the lawyer brought out a gaudy package—a cheap, woven straw box approximately  6” by 6” by 6” high, tied shut with a pink and green scarf, whose frayed ends had been chopped off—set it on the polished desk and gave it a shove in Juli’s direction. The item had no place in this sophisticated, high end attorney’s office.  Instinctively she reached out to catch the box as it slid across the highly polished wood, finding it heavier than she expected.

“Don’t open it here,” Cilla said in a rush as Juli toyed with the knot.

“I should make sure it’s okay to take onto the Nebula Zephyr,” she said, working at the tight wrapping, “And have you verify the item is as it should be.”

She had the impression the woman was pushing her chair as far away from the desk as she could go without being obvious. But when Juli removed the scarf and opened the box, she did a double take, “It’s a rock.”

“Yes, from Tahumaroa Two, from the Beach of the Two Goddesses to be exact. He wanted it placed there,” The lawyer swallowed hard, “Anywhere on the beach is fine.”

“Is this one of those cases where the gullible tourists fall for the tour guide spiel about how removing the rocks brings bad luck?”

pets in space 4The blurb:  An unusual bequest….

Juli Shaeffer, the Nebula Zephyr’s cruise director, receives a mysterious bequest from the estate of a longtime passenger – a lump of rock taken from a reef on the planet Tahumaroa. Legend states anyone who steals from the ocean gods will be cursed. The passenger’s will requests the rock be returned to the beach so his heirs won’t be affected by the bad luck he believed he’d incurred. Juli doesn’t believe in superstitions and she agrees to carry out this small favor on the ship’s next stop at the planet in question.

Until the rock disappears from her office…

When the rock disappears and reappears in various locations around the ship, and seems connected to a steadily escalating series of mishaps, Juli turns to Third Officer Steve Aureli as the only one she feels she can trust. Along with Steve and his elderly Aunt Dian – a passenger aboard the Nebula Zephyr for this cruise – she investigates the strange series of malfunctions plaguing the interstellar luxury liner. Steve and Juli enlist his Aunt Dian’s dog, Charrli, a retired Sectors Z Corps canine, to help them track the missing rock as it moves about the ship.

Juli and Steve must find the rock, hang onto it and transport it to the planet’s surface, before the alien idol’s curse turns deadly. The attraction between the two of them grows as the threat to Juli becomes more and more focused. Can she carry out her task while he keeps her safe from the alien curse? Will the capricious alien idol bring them good fortune…or disaster?

Alexis Glynn Latner Talks Unicorns in Space from Pets In Space 4

pets in space 4Veronica: My guest today is USA Today Best Selling Author Alexis Glynn Latner, here to talk a little about her story in the Pets In Space® 4 scifi romance anthology, which comes out October 8th.  (I’m the co-founder of this annual collection and my novel in the book is Star Cruise: Idol’s Curse.)

Alexis: Prince the genetically engineered unicorn first showed up in a story in Analog science fiction magazine. That story is folded into my novel Witherspin, to be published in December 2019.  Prince lives in a nature park inside the spinning interstellar city-state called Wendis. In Witherspin, Wendis holds an annual festival celebrating the Ascendance—the era when humanity left Earth on rockets and finally starships.

The Ascendance Fair is a huge interstellar tourist attraction, held every summer.  When I wanted to write a Pets in Space story set in Wendis, I had the notion of a smaller, warmup fair, something even more like today’s Renaissance Festivals. Winter would be a good time for it, giving the Fair organizers time to solve logistical problems before their big showtime the following summer. (They do end up with their hands full of problems!)  Of course, taking take place five thousand years from now and on the other side of the colonized stars, the Winterfair would have much less to do with actual history than myths and legends.

As soon as I started thinking along these lines, Prince wanted in.

Alexis-Glynn-LatnerCharacters in fiction come alive for the author. If they don’t, they may not come alive for the readers either.  Prince definitely came alive for me. He let me know that, like mythical unicorns, he has a special affinity for women who aren’t pair-bonded.  There’s a Medieval legend about how unicorns would come to a virgin and lay their head in her lap. In Winter’s Prince, he helps two women each find their true love—while our heroines and heroes battle a criminal smuggling ring that has invaded the Winterfair.  Prince is one of the heroes. And he knows it, too!

Prince presented me with a logistical problem.  He lives high up on a mountain in the park, where the spingravity is less.  That suits Prince and the other unicorns.  They are delicate-boned, and they might not even be able to stand up, much less prance and canter, in Earth’s gravity or the spin equivalent.  But the plot in Winter’s Prince had to unfold at lower elevations with heavier spingravity. Fortunately, there are characters in Witherspin who use spingravity braces.  These are humans genetically engineered for low-gravity moons and space stations.  To visit full-gravity areas, they wear special braces. So does Prince, in a paragraph from my story:

Too stunned to keep crying, Sara rose and held out her hand. The unicorn extended its muzzle. She felt its velvet skin and warm breath and smelled its warm hide—like horse smell with a floral note. Its delicate ears tilted toward her. Oh. This creature was not just a silly chimera, something genetically stitched together for no good reason. It was beautiful and horselike. . . . Patting the unicorn’s sides and legs, she found the gravity braces. They were ingenious and well fitted enough not to abrade that tender skin.

Meet My STAR CRUISE IDOL’S CURSE Pet

canva charrli with shipsIn just about two week’s the fourth edition of the scifi romance anthology PETS IN SPACE® goes live (on my birthday no less, October 8th!). Co-founded by yours truly and my author friend Pauline B. Jones, this limited edition collection of all-new, great stories supports Hero-Dogs, INC., which provides service dogs to veterans and first responders in need. More details below.

Each author in the collection writes a scifi romance story also involving  a pet of some kind. This year, my pet is a canine named Charrli, who helps the main characters track down a dangerous alien idol roaming the interstellar cruise liner Nebula Zephyr. He’s a veteran from the Sectors Special Forces Z corps of telepathic animals and their human handlers.

(And there’s a free reader magnet available until October 7th which includes a mini short story from me with some of these characters but alas, not Charrli. A woman with butterfly hair though… https://www.petsinspaceantho.com/sampler/ )

Here’s the blurb for my story, which is a 42K word novel:

An unusual bequest….

An excerpt from the book where Juli and Charrli make a discovery on the ship’s beach deck during a big party:

Juli was traversing the beach venue when Charrli scampered up to her, barking. She craned her head, searching the crowd for Dian but didn’t see her. “Are you lost?” she asked the dog.

Charrli ran a few steps, danced in a circle and yipped as if to demand she follow him.

“I don’t know what you want,” she said. “I can’t play right now—I’m working.”

The dog bounded to her side and carefully clamped his teeth on her hand, taking care not to break the skin as she stooped over to pet him. He growled.

Fearing perhaps Dian was ill, or in some kind of trouble, Juli looked around wildly for Steve, even as Charrli tugged harder. Deciding she could call for help on the senior officer channel if there was a problem but would feel silly if all the dog wanted was to play, Juli said, “All right, I’m coming. Show me the way.”

Charrli released her hand and bolted along the beach as if time was of the essence. Juli pursued him as fast as she could although he got a bit ahead of her. He was barking excitedly and circling an object in the sand as she quickened her pace.

And came to a dead halt, shocked at what lay in front of her.

The excerpt – Broke and alone, Tassia is on the run from assassins and has asked her genie-like companion for a way off the planet.:

She flinched against the padded seat as a vision thudded into her head. She saw the announcement board at the neighborhood dance studio, and as she held her breath, the vision focused in on one message in particular. She’d paid it no attention at all earlier in the evening.

Nebula Zephyr Comettes seeking fill in dancers for cruise to Dyenbachar Five – All expenses paid, union salary, must have experience.

The open auditions were tomorrow morning, in a hotel complex adjacent to the spaceport.

Could escape be that easy? But what did she know about dancing for a popular revue? Her training was classical, with odd bits of folk dance acquired over the years.

As the robo cab deposited her outside the bustling spaceport, Tassia clutched her backpack with trembling hands, determination putting steel into her frame. If the audition announcement was what the vision had shown her, this was her only chance, success not guaranteed.

Is She the #Scifi Anastasia? STAR CRUISE MYSTERY DANCER

Woman in waving dress as a flame dancing with flying fabric. Dar

Adapted from a blog post I wrote this week for Pauline Baird Jones’s blog on “Why I Wrote Star Cruise: Mystery Dancer”, which is my latest 41K Sectors scifi romance novel in the just released PETS IN SPACE 3 anthology.

I love going back to revisit my interstellar cruise liner, the Nebula Dream, for these PISA stories, as the ship cruises through the futuristic human civilization known as The Sectors.  I’ve written a number of books and novellas centered on events aboard the ship now and find the whole cruise setup lends itself to telling a good scifi romance adventure tale. Readers new to my world don’t need to know a lot of backstory to enjoy the events, and for those who have read others in the series, it’s a nice return to see some favorite characters (I hope!).

I started with the concept of the pet because that drives my plot for these PISA adventures. For some reason I kept seeing a mental picture of a Siamese cat, but with a third eye. I thought a Siamese cat would be fairly easy and interesting for our talented artist Nyssa Juneau to turn into an alien feline. But I’ve done a cat and a catlike alien before, for PISA1, although Midorri, the alien pet there actually is kind of a cross between a red panda and a tribble who acts like a cat. So I wanted something very different and I started thinking about what if the cat wasn’t actually a real animal at all? I ended up making F’rrh a ‘jenfellini’, which is something like a genie, living in a beautiful lacquered box. Visualize the gorgeous painted boxes that come from Russia.

Then, the tenuous link to Russia reminded me of the whole tragic story of the last Tsar and his family, and how they were murdered 100 years ago, this year. Rumors always persisted one of the children might have survived. From Wikipedia:

anastasiaThe youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, the last sovereign of Imperial Russia, and his wife, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna.

Anastasia was the younger sister of Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, and Maria, and was the elder sister of Alexei Nikolaevich, Tsarevich of Russia. She was murdered with her family by members of the Cheka, the Bolshevik secret police, in Yekaterinburg on July 17, 1918.

Persistent rumors of her possible escape circulated after her death, fuelled by the fact that the location of her burial was unknown during the decades of Communist rule. The mass grave near Yekaterinburg which held the remains of the Tsar, his wife, and three of their daughters was revealed in 1991, and the bodies of Alexei Nikolaevich and the remaining daughter—either Anastasia or her older sister Maria—were discovered in 2007. Her possible survival has been conclusively disproved. Scientific analysis including DNA testing confirmed that the remains are those of the imperial family, showing that all four grand duchesses were killed in 1918.

Several women falsely claimed to have been Anastasia; the best known impostor is Anna Anderson. Anderson’s body was cremated upon her death in 1984, but DNA testing in 1994 on available pieces of Anderson’s tissue and hair showed no relation to the Romanov family.

anastasia movie posterAs Wikipedia states, various individuals claimed to be ‘Anastasia’ or another of the siblings, and of course, there have been movies and plays written with that theme, including a new TV series this year, entitled ‘The Romanovs’. I always flash back to the movie version with Yul Brynner (such an intense actor) and Ingrid Bergman because that movie was one of my mother’s favorites and also left the answer to the question of “Is she or is she not Anastasia?” somewhat open at the end. Personally, I always wanted it to be true.

My daughters loved the animated fantasy versionanastasia animated of the tale, with the voices of Meg Ryan and John Cusack, when they were growing up.

So I had the heroine – a possible princess on the run – but how could she fit into the Nebula Zephyr? Since the hero would be one of the former Special Forces soldiers who make up the ship’s security force, I had to be able to make the two interact and fall in love in a situation fraught with danger and suspicion.

I’ve wanted to do a story about the Comettes dance troupe which performs aboard the cruise liners since I wrote my very first published scifi romance, the award winning Wreck of the Nebula Dream (a sister ship of sorts to the one I write about nowadays). Dancing is a skill a maybe princess might have at a high level, right? So let her be a new member of the ship’s dancers….throw in a fabulous jewel and we have the PISA3 story!

Here’s an excerpt when Tassia begins to tell her tale to Liam, after some very distressing and dangerous events on the ship, involving her:

“You must have been really young at the time of—well, when your family…” Liam stammered to a halt and searched in vain for a tactful way to refer to the massacre of everyone she loved.

“I was eight.” She nodded. She hesitated before asking, “How much do you know about it?”

“I know it was something to do with an engagement? A wedding?”

“Yes, my eldest half-sister Fenna was engaged to marry the Duke of Gradmirov, a powerful and rival bloodline. It was a strategic alliance, not a love match. Even as a little girl, I understood that. Poor Fenna wept for weeks after my father decided she was the pawn.” She took a deep breath. “There was to be a reception to fete the happy couple, all of our family and all of the Duke’s relatives and retainers attending.”

Liam was concerned about Tassia, how pale she was, coping with the memories. He wasn’t sure this discussion was a good idea, but he kept silent as she continued her account.

“My father had multiple wives, you understand, which was allowed at the time on Ruatsar, and quite a few children. I was one of the youngest. I’d been at dance class, I think, but I was late to the gathering so I decided to slip in by a side door and brazen it out with anyone who questioned whether I’d been there the whole time.” She was quiet for a moment, eyes locked on visions from the past where he couldn’t reach her. “The entire family was dressed up, to do honor to the guests. I had on my finest white dress, with three petticoats and the badges of my rank on a sash, a blue sash. Matching blue shoes with shiny buckles.” Her fingers touched her shoulder as if to finger the long lost brooches once more. “I was just inside the room, only a few steps from the service door, when Gradmirov pulled out a weapon and shot my father at point blank range, then my sister Fenna. His guards targeted our guards and more of his men swept into the room, shooting and stabbing. The screaming was terrible, the blood…” Her voice trailed off, and Liam hugged her. “I saw my mother fall, her throat cut—”

“You don’t have to tell me.” He kissed her forehead gently.

Tassia looked at him, her eyes unfocused at first as if her gaze was directed inward, at the mental pictures she was describing and blinked. “I’ve never told anyone the whole story. I—I’d like to tell you.”

He locked his arms tight around her. “Then I’ll listen. You’re safe here, now, with me. Not there.” Liam’s anger at the monsters who’d slaughtered an entire family was a vicious beast clawing at his gut, but there was no one to kill for her. All he could do was listen and shelter her in the here and now.

“I hid behind a vase taller than I was, but a man ran at me, his face all contorted, like a demon in an old temple painting. I screamed and backed away, but he struck at me with his sword.” She touched one hand to her head gingerly, as if the physical pain throbbed to this day. “The scar is under my hair. We found out later I’d been shot as well, a flesh wound to the arm. My dress was all red. I don’t remember everything. Large chunks of time are blank. I get flashes of memory.”

A blank memory is a blessing. Listening to her, her voice eerie as if she was watching a trideo and narrating the events, he wanted to shield her from all the adverse things in the universe, to take her pain away. But he couldn’t touch this agony.

“Somehow I got out of the room, and I ran to my own bedroom. I hid under the bed. Xandrina’s adult niece was my maid, and she came in, I think intending to steal some of my things in the confusion. But, as a scared child, I didn’t realize larceny was her purpose, so I cried out to her for help. I believed she was searching for me. She was a known, friendly face. I give her credit, she threw another dress over my head, told me to be quiet, swept my shelves clean of my collection of the dragizi, the little jewel encrusted miniatures, putting them in a laundry bag, and took me through a servants’ hallway to her mother’s suite in the far wing. Madame Xandrina bandaged my head wound with scarves.” Tassia smiled. “Beautiful scarves my mother had given her at various times. I remember arguing with her that I’d ruin them with the blood. She told me to hush then she said we were going to go far away from Ruatsar so no one could hurt me ever again.”

Jaw clenched, he reflected on the terrible scenes she’d witnessed and the turn of fate that had saved her life when so many died. “Seven hells, what you endured—”

“Oh, there’s more.”

But is she who she says she is, or someone else who was there? You’ll have to read the book to find out!

How To Get Off the Planet? Weekend Writing Warriors

The excerpt (Tassia’s elderly companion has been murdered, she escaped but  her problems still abound so she asks her companion F’rrh for help. F’rrh is a little like an alien genie.):

What am I going to do? How am I going to get off this damn planet?

She had Sectors citizenship papers, as phony as could be, but perfect forgeries right down to the holo seal. Xandrina had spent the bulk of their funds on obtaining the precious documents for both of them. But their carefully hoarded credits had run out after the flight to this world cost more than expected due to enemy disruption of shipping lanes and Tassia’s ultimate destination lay many lightyears away in the next Sector, out of reach.

When she thought she was far enough from the hotel, she hailed a robo cab and headed for the spaceport. Sitting in the back of the tiny vehicle, she opened the pack a fraction, slid her hand inside and rubbed the top of the shiny, lacquered box, opening the lid a fraction. I need a way to get offworld for free.

For a moment nothing happened as she touched the box, and Tassia’s heart sank.

In my story, the rock star comes from a planet with songs that are sung continuously for a thousand years. Here’s how she explains them to Grant, the hero…(I gave a bit more explanation for what prompted me to develop these on Diane Burton’s blog last month)

The excerpt:

“What’s the deal with these songs? Do generations of people really sing the same tune night and day for a thousand years?”

She nodded. “Sometimes it’s the same song but more often there will be new verses being written daily or weekly, and given to the choirs and soloists. The musical variety depends on the funding and the purpose for the song. But the music never stops, not for anything. There’s a story once of a huge fire and the choir at that time moved outside and continued singing while the building fell. Anyone can commission a thousand year song although as you can imagine it takes massive resources, so typically only the most elite families or temples will do so. I have heard of villages putting all their resources into it, but the village was long gone and forgotten by the time the song concluded.”

“A thousand years? People actually sign up to sing the same song for their entire lives, and never hear the final notes? Their children never heard the final notes? Why?”

She shrugged. “Why do human beings do anything? Why did the people from Terra venture out in their generation ships before the hyperspeed drives were invented? The songs are a part of the Calillia religion. Legend says they bring the blessings of the gods upon the planet and the people. In fact, it was gods who started the first songs, millennia ago. If you believe in myths.” She gave him a shrewd glance. “Nowadays much of the planet’s economy is based on the songs and supporting the needs of the singers.”

Pulling him with her, Karissa ducked into the back of a large song temple, where the choir he’d heard was faithfully singing the chorus and refrain of their life’s work.

“See this?” Karissa pointed at an elaborate, slow moving device beside the door. “This was the style of chronograph when the song started. It’s measuring how long they’ve been singing, and how much time is left.”

“How long?”

She eyed the device. “Eight hundred years, give or take a decade or two.”

The Story Behind the Story: Why I Wrote My #Scifi Rock Star Romance

pets2In case you haven’t heard me making lots of noise and throwing confetti, Embrace the Romance: Pets In Space 2 made the USA Today Best Seller List this week!

I thought it would be a good time to re-blog this post I wrote for my co-organizer on the anthology, Pauline B Jones, about why I wrote this particular story. Pauline loves to have authors come visit and spill the beans on the stories behind the story. I’ll give you the beginning of the post here and then you can jump over and read the rest on Pauline’s blog.

Here’s how I began the post:

“It’s always such a pleasure to visit your blog and explain the influences that contributed to how I wrote a newly released book or story! In fact, this process is so much fun I sometimes find myself thinking while writing a book, “Oh, I’ll have to tell Pauline about this.”

I’ve always wanted to write a rock star romance because I LOVE the genre but if I sit down to write anything, it inevitably becomes science fiction. So when you and I decided to do Pets In Space 2, I thought, here’s my chance to involve a rock star. Among my favorites are Nalini Singh’s Rock Kiss series, J T Geissinger, Liora Blake…plus movies such as “The Bodyguard” and “Beyond the Lights”.  I had also recently read that there are cruises nowadays where bands are featured and do concerts and fan events during the cruise. So that part of the story worked fine if I set this Pets In Space story on board my interstellar luxury cruise liner, the Nebula Dream.

The next question was who would the hero be? I love to write Sectors Special Forces heroes, or recently retired service members from that branch, so I decided Grant would fall into that category and be a security officer on the ship. In that job assignment, it was logical that he’d cross paths with a high profile passenger like a rock star.

As far as a pet….”(and now you can find the rest  of the post here, including an excerpt: http://www.paulinebjones.com/why-star-cruise-songbird  )

Laurie A Green on the Mystery of Flashpoint EMBRACE THE ROMANCE: PETS IN SPACE 2

pets2LargeIn Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2, the tale of Courting Disaster includes some nifty Faster Than Light (FTL) travel that is reached via “flashpoint.” It’s a series-wide concept explored in Inherit the Stars, StarDog and Farewell Andromeda that allows specialized ships to “slip the bonds of 3D” and enter another dimension—the Dark Energy Dimension or DEDspace—as an almost instantaneous way of traveling from point A to point Z in our galaxy.

You could think of flashpoint as a sort of a high tech shortcut around the stars.

In the here and now, scientists aren’t 100% sure that Dark Energy and Dark Matter exist, they only have theories that they must in order for the universe to function the way that it does. Something is keeping the galaxies from spinning apart. The problem is, neither Dark Energy nor Dark Matter can be seen or sensed. And so far, there’s been no proof that either is really out there. All scientists know is that, mathematically, the universe can’t behave as it does without this pair of forces.

Here’s a surprise. Based on scientific calculations, we can only see a little over 4% of our actual universe, with the dark and mysterious components accounting for almost 96%. That’s a whole lot of big and scary nothing!

4 Laurie A Green FlashpointWhen I started researching possible FTL travel, I wanted to avoid using jump gates or hyperspace or any of a number of ideas that had already been explored in science fiction. I needed to create something new. The concept that made the most sense to me is that Dark Energy combined with Dark Matter actually exist in another unknown dimension.  That I could get my head around. (And better yet, my muse seemed to love the idea, too!)

Though up to nine dimensions (or more!) might mathematically exist, our tangible bodies are programmed to function in only three–height, width, depth. Or maybe four, if you consider time itself a dimension. So what if the combined elements of Dark Energy and Dark Matter exist in one of these other, unknown dimensions and it’s a place we could actually enter if we found a means to do so? And once we’ve entered this ‘flashpoint portal’ we might be able to span huge distances in normal space, almost instantaneously.

4 Laurie A Green StarshipFTLflashpointThat’s the science fiction behind the prototype starships in my series. The DEDspace drive was invented by a man named Zaviar Mennelsohn, who is frequently mentioned in the series, and his discovery is touched on in Courting Disaster here:

“…The first ship to prove his theories that DEDspace existed. The first vessel to cross the flashpoint barrier. That was some thirty calendars ago, right here in the Rift.” If Jagger’s memory served, Drea’s father had had some crazy notion that the charged particles in the Bradley Rift interacted with Dark Energy Dimension space. But it was a crazy idea that had proven to be right.

So DEDspace drive capability is a huge advantage. But to balance the laws of nature, there has to be a huge tradeoff. And so there is.

The excerpt:

“I don’t know much about DEDspace…except that it hurts,” Ket remarked.

Jagger turned his head back to the stars. “The price we pay for slipping the bonds of 3D.”

************************

Flashpoint is not fun. In fact, it’s terrifying. It alters the senses and perceptions and distorts time, space and reality, so it’s downright tortuous for crew and passengers to experience. It even drives some unfortunate souls completely insane. So it’s not a practical way to jump around the cosmos, even if it is a necessary and advantageous method for a select few.

Like every “superpower,” this rare ability comes at a price.

Laurie’s story – Courting Disaster: StarDog2

A commander of a spaceship faces the toughest decision of his life when he vows to protect the woman and her StarDog that he is escorting through a dangerous section of space.

Write You Into a Song Weekend Writing Warriors

Warriors logo revisedHere’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

The snippet is from my new novella Star Cruise: Songbird, from the EMBRACE THE ROMANCE: PETS IN SPACE 2 anthology, which released on October 10th.

This will be the final snippet I’ll share from the novella. Grant has taken Karissa the singer to the security office while they wait for an unruly crowd of fans to disperse. Grant has been checking the wall chrono anxiously and Karissa asked if she was keeping him from a date…

The excerpt:

Reluctantly he said, “Not a date. I have a—a pet, who requires exercise.”

“A pet on board the ship? I never expected that answer.  So Fido needs a walk, does he? Let’s go—I could use some exercise.”

“It’s not that simple,” he said.

“Is the pet exercising area open to passengers?”

“Not the one I use.” He admitted. “But—”

“This office is boring,” she said, “Now I’m not a Socialite who’d probably die of boredom if you kept me here, but you can’t dangle a chance to take a pet for its walk in front of me and then yank it away. Too cruel, Officer Barton – be mean to me and I might have to write you into a song.”

pets2The story:

Grant Barton, a Security Officer on the Nebula Zephyr, is less than thrilled with his current assignment to guard an Interstellar singing sensation while she’s on board the ship. It doesn’t help that he and his military war bird Valkyr are dealing with their recent separation from the Sectors Special Forces and uncertainty over their future, with their own planet in ruins.

Karissa Dawnstar is on top of the charts and seemingly has it all – talent, fame, fortune and devoted fans, but behind her brave smile and upbeat lyrics she hides an aching heart. When a publicity stunt goes wrong, Karissa finds herself in the arms of the security officer assigned to protect her – and discovers a mutual attraction she can’t ignore.

Trouble continues to plague the pair, driving a wedge between them and leaving Grant certain that Karissa is in more danger than she realizes, from overzealous fans and her own management. Grant is determined to protect Karissa whether she wants his help or not. Can he discover the truth behind what’s going on before he loses Karissa or is there someone else plotting to keep them apart – permanently?
