We’ve shifted away from Ancient Egypt for a few weeks to my newly released, best selling science fiction romance novel (story blurb below the picture). I’m thinking maybe two more excerpts from this book and then it’ll be time for Ancient Egypt again.
I’m going with an excerpt from a bit further into the book, after the war has broken out and they’re fleeing the burning compound. Andi has been talking with Sergeant Wilson about the events at the house where she’d been staying, how he and a few of his men escaped when the fight started. The sergeant is speaking. Although a little creative editing has occurred today, I’m adhering strictly to the WeWriWa eight sentence rule:
“…We was pretty keyed up. Sure glad you and the captain made it out of the ambush in one piece.”
Andi glanced ahead to where Deverane led the column. If I’d been inside the dance hall when the terrorists attacked, could I have gotten myself out somehow? Would he have been able to rescue me? Having seen the captain in action, she figured he would have found a way, even against dismal odds.
As if the mere mention of his name had conjured him out of the air, Deverane circled back to check on them, saying, “Save your breath, Sergeant, Miss Markriss, we need to make serious time here, not discuss current events.”
I love and appreciate your comments and feedback every week! Go here to find all the other Weekend Writing Warriors and read an amazing variety of terrific excerpts…
And the story blurb:
Andi Markriss hasn’t exactly enjoyed being the houseguest of the planetary high-lord, but her company sent her to represent them at a political wedding. When hotshot Sectors Special Forces Captain Tom Deverane barges in on the night of the biggest social event of the summer, Andi isn’t about to offend her high-ranking host on Deverane’s say-so—no matter how sexy he is, or how much he believes they need to leave now.
Deverane was thinking about how to spend his retirement bonus when HQ assigned him one last mission: rescue a civilian woman stranded on a planet on the verge of civil war. Someone has pulled some serious strings to get her plucked out of the hot zone. Deverane’s never met anyone so hard-headed—or so appealing. Suddenly his mission to protect this one woman has become more than just mere orders.
That mission proves more dangerous than he expected when rebel fighters attack the village and raze it to the ground. Deverane escapes with Andi, and on their hazardous journey through the wilderness, Andi finds herself fighting her uncomfortable attraction to the gallant and courageous captain. But Deverane’s not the type to settle down, and running for one’s life doesn’t leave much time to explore a romance.
Then Andi is captured by the rebel fighters, but Deverane has discovered that Zulaire’s so-called civil war is part of a terrifying alien race’s attempt to subjugate the entire Sector. If he pushes on to the capitol Andi will die. Deverane must decide whether to save the woman he loves, or sacrifice her to save Zulaire.

The captain sounds very hard to ignore. 🙂 Great 8
From ancient Egypt to sci-fi, you sure cover the range. Like the concept of this story. Plenty of opportunity for conflict.
Thank you! Maybe someday I’ll stop in the middle and write a contemporary romance LOL.
Sounds like a good man to have on your side. Nice eight!
USA Today! I’ve been reading about you, Veronica. The urgency in his voice is impossible to resist. Super eight.
I was so thrilled to have my covers appear on the USA Today HEA blog – that was EXCITING! 🙂 Thanks for the kind words!
I love her musings…and his brisk all business (at the moment anyway) attitude!
Your characters are clear-cut and easy to get invested in. Deverane’s a military guy all right but I’ll bet there’s more to him than just that. 🙂
But I like discussing current events! 😀 I’m sure the captain would have found a way to rescue her too. He’s a reliable man that way. Great eight, Veronica!
I always appreciate the comments, thanks for stopping by! I’m about to go out and cruise everyone else’s eights right now…
I love sci-fi romance and this 8 was a real teaser because its the middle of all the action. I need to know more 🙂
Loving the tension in the air. Fast moving 8, Veronica. Well done.
Sometimes a voice of reason is exactly what the situation calls for. Great snippet!
The Captain would have saves her, no doubt, but he should know that discussing current events is important if not essential for survival. How else can you learn about your mistakes? :p
Excellent 8, Veronica. Wow-you made the USA Today HEA blog! Woot! I’m so proud of and so happy for you! 🙂
Nice snippet! And congrats of the USA Today HEA blog! Well done!
Is there anything sexier than a man that you know will rescue you no matter what? I think not!
Nice peek into the action, stakes and characters!
I don’t normally read sci fic but your characters sound intriguing
WOW congrats on the USA thing
Congrats on the release and the USA Today HEA blog! Nice 8. Sounds like a very intriguing story and a great way to introduce us to the characters.
Reminds me just a bit of Captain Mal from Firefly. Very intriguing. Also, your cover art is TO DIE FOR! Glad I stopped by for this eight.
Fiona Jayde does my science fiction covers and I do love them! Thanks for coming to visit and for the kind words….(Ah, Captain Mal, oh yesssss.)
Very nice snippet! So many different emotions flying around. Well done.
Nice teaser 🙂
I agree with Deverane – no time to discuss events, they need to make time. Lots of emotions coming across this snippet.
Hmmm, her mind is wandering…wonder if she’ll manage to make the captain’s attention wander as much as he makes hers wander.
I like the contrast between the two characters: she’s extrapolating scenarios in her mind and he’s practical to the extreme.
All right, I got the kindle version. But to tell the truth, I like Egypt better.
The next Egyptian is out October 15th, coincidentally. I’ll start doing excerpts from it in probably another week. Thanks!
I love how businesslike he is—and how she’s beginning to trust him.
(I really need to buy a Kindle . . . )
Not to be promo-y but it is available as a paperback though Amazon. 🙂 I’m a kindle girl but I LOVE being able to hold my “real” book in my hand too.
Really? ‘Scuse me, I have to go shopping . . .
Love the dynamic between them. Kind of gruff, but the tension is delish. Great work!
I get that he’s trying to keep her alive… but he’s still kind of rude. I wonder what the attitude’s hiding?
Congrats on the USA piece.
I like how she wonders her fate if the Captain hadn’t been there
Excellent dialogue! I love the build up to the action you’ve created!
Loved the snippet! You need a ‘get the job done’ kind of Captain. I’m intrigued and want to know more.
USA Today! Woohoo!
I like the captain, and the contrast between them. They’ve both got their work cut out for them.
As always, thank you all so much for stopping by and commenting! Much appreciated….gotta love the Weekend Writing Warriors!
Great blurb! Si-fi romance is really something different for me to read. I must say I’m enjoying it. You’ve built such a complex world too, yet believable. I do so like Deverane. His last line was great. He’s trying to stay the no nonsense hero guy. He’d be pretty hard not to fall for!
Congrats on your USA Today fame!!!
Very nice snippet. I love sci-fi romance and can’t wait to read more. Thanks for sharing your 8.
Well written, smooth excerpt. I am enjoying this story.
Love that you have such variety to your writing! Egypt to sci-fi…you go girl! Great 8! Definitely pulled me in and now I wanna know more! 🙂
Something seems to be going on on with the captain. At least in her head.
