Moving on to Star Cruise: Outbreak for a few weeks of excerpts….Dr. Shane has been at loose ends since leaving the military and her father’s arranged for her to take a temp job on an interstellar cruise liner. Emily is persuaded to sign on, and now she’s on the ship, escorted by Security Officer Jake Dilon. Moving on from the sick pet incident in sickbay in last week’s excerpt, Jake’s going to report to the captain and one of his staff joins him.
“So, how was the doc? Did meeting your angel go the way you expected? You were pretty excited about it at coffee this morning.”
Wishing he’d kept his mouth shut about the subject of his fascination with Dr. Emily Shane, Jake said, “She’s strung pretty tight. I never even told her we’d met before.” He gave Red a sideways glance. “I’d appreciate it if you don’t mention it to her when you meet her. She obviously didn’t remember, and why would she?”
“Yeah, conditions weren’t optimal at the time,” Red said.
The story:
She saved countless soldiers in the wars … but does she have the weapons to fight an outbreak?
Dr. Emily Shane, veteran of the Sector Wars, is known as “The Angel of Fantalar” for her bravery under fire as a medic. However, the doctor has her own war wounds–severe PTSD and guilt over those she failed to save.
Persuaded to fill a seemingly frivolous berth as ship’s doctor on the huge and luxurious interstellar cruise liner Nebula Zephyr, she finds the job brings unexpected perks–a luxe beach deck with water imported from Tahumaroa II, and Security Officer Jake Dilon, a fellow veteran who heats her up like a tropical sun.
However, Emily soon learns she and Jake didn’t leave all peril behind in the war. A mysterious ailment aboard the Zephyr begins to claim victim after victim … and they must race against time and space to find the cause and a cure! Trapped on a ship no spaceport will allow to dock, their efforts are complicated by a temperamental princess and a terrorist–one who won’t hesitate to take down any being in the way of his target. If anyone’s left when the disease is through with them…

Interesting peek at some back story with them.
He seems like a nice guy with enough self-confidence that Emily’s lack of recognition doesn’t bother him.
Oh, I think it sounds like it hurt his ego a bit that she didn’t recognize him. Not a lot, but enough that he doesn’t want the topic brought up. Now I’m really curious about their back story. 🙂
Oh a little bit of history. Great snippet, Veronica. 🙂
I feel for poor Jake, it stinks not to be remembered
Clever dynamic, Veronica. Obviously their shared experience meant something very different to her. A tad disappointing when your Angel of light has no recollection of
Something which was a big deal to you.
Little backstory … interesting
Ooh, so maybe she doctored him up on some previous occasion? Maybe she doesn’t recognize him with his clothes on. 🙂
Oh , this is interesting. Let the speculations fly, Veronica will pull us through. Hugs to my friend!
Well this looks interesting…definitely intrigued! Nice work!
It’s always awkward when someone doesn’t remember meeting someone — for both parties.
BTW, I’m reading Hostage to the Stars now. I’m halfway through it. It is awesome!
I’m so pleased to hear you’re enjoying Hostage! Yay!
Perhaps she did remember him, but doesn’t want to let on. It sounds an interesting story.
Intriguing hint of past connections.
Oooo so many possibilities here. Hope he builds up the courage to talk to her again soon!
This is sweet- a view of the tough guy’s vulnerable center. Very nice snippet.
Interesting how he wants to keep things from the doctor. Nice snippet!

She didn’t remember him. Hmm, makes me wonder if that stung just a little. 🙂
Yes, there’s quite a backstory with Jake and Emily, and their different perceptions of that first meeting, which she doesn’t remember. I really enjoyed writing this one, some twists and turns for sure, not ‘just’ the outbreak going on. Thanks for all the comments – I love to get the opinions and feedback.
It’s a great but subtle showing of their dynamic, how he feels about her forgetting him. I can’t wait to see how her perception of that meeting differs!
Ugh! That is the worst–when you’re so excited about seeing someone again, and they don’t remember your first meeting. 🙂
Ew, ouch, didn’t remember him. More memorable to him than to her? He has to worry about that, or he wouldn’t be concerned that no one brings it up. Good backstory intrigue.
I loved your heroine. She didn’t want to be a hero even though she was. She knew firsthand what the battlefield was like.
Well, this could get interesting. 🙂
I can see why he doesn’t want to tell her. On the other hand, I can imagine her finding out they’d met before, and wondering why he didn’t mention it. Could be a problem.
Oh how curious. I wonder what the backstory is here between these two and why she doesn’t remember him then.
Hmm…is the backstory something I’ve missed, or something to look forward to?
Sucks when someone doesn’t remember you even when you remember them.
Maybe it would actually do her good to know and have some focus on the lives she saved instead of the ones she lost.
Awww, poor Jake. HIs ego seems to be a bit bruised. It sucks though when someone doesn’t remember you!
I’m wondering if she REALLY doesn’t remember him, or if she’s answering a professional code that prohibits her bringing it up. At any rate, the backstory is compelling, as is this mystery. Looking forward to more! =D
