If you haven’t read any of my Badari Warriors series: Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens.

The excerpt – jumping ahead a little, Aydarr the Badari Alpha has taken a moment alone with Flo to thank her for volunteering. Jill is the alpha’s human mate. MARL is the ancient alien Artificial Intelligence.

“We’re spread so thin on the ground, it’s a miracle we can rescue anyone at all. We’ve been incredibly lucky and I know it, “Aydarr said, “Adding another hundred or so Badari soldiers to my forces will be a game changer as you humans like to say. I have to make the tradeoffs with an eye toward winning the damn war not any one individual battle.”

Flo studied him, astonished the Alpha had revealed so much of his thinking to her, “I have immense respect for you, sir, or I wouldn’t be going on this mission. I’m glad this kind of decision is above my pay grade as it’s obviously a heavy load to bear. If I may say so, I think we’re all lucky you and Jill are here to run the war. You both have the guts and the vision required – it’s an honor to serve under you both.”

He extended his hand, “Thank you and good luck.”

Badari weren’t big on skin to skin contact with humans, except with their mates, so Flo took it as a high honor and shook his hand, “We should probably get going.”

He opened the door to the hall and allowed her to walk out first. There was a small circle of people waiting for them, plus MARL, floating serenely and displaying a soothing set of pink tones washing over his surface.

MARL’s happy he got to shove his toy in my brain. With an effort Flo kept herself from putting her hand to the spot on the back of her head where the AI’s  implant had been inserted.

Ex-Special Forces soldier and mercenary Flo Michetti is bored with her assignment as a pilot for the genetically engineered Badari pack in their fight against the evil Khagrish scientists. She jumps at the chance to take a dangerous undercover mission. She infiltrates a group of human prisoners on their way to a secret lab in the southern ocean, where the Badari believe many more of their own kind have been created and are being experimented on. Once Flo has located the lab, found the Alpha among the Badari there and sent a report back, the plan will be to attack and rescue all the prisoners.

Arriving at the island Flo learns the true nature of the horrific experiment for which the humans have been brought to this remote location. Time will be perilously short to escape before it’s too late for all of them. She has to locate the Alpha of this captive southern pack, who conceals his identity to escape death at the hands of the Khagrish, and get him to join with her and her allies.

Daegan feels an instant attraction to Flo when the Badari and the humans are forced together by the Khagrish scientists, but there are mysteries and questions surrounding her. Before he reveals himself as the incognito Alpha she’s seeking, he wants answers to allay his doubts. He also wants Flo in his bed…but can he risk his heart to claim her as his mate?

Complicating the situation is a dangerous rival for Daegan’s position as Alpha, an oncoming hurricane and Flo’s resistance to abandoning her life as a soldier of fortune…as the Khagrish scientists prepare to initiate the experiment, the clock is ticking for humans and Badari alike.

    • I’ve had fun writing MARL. More surprises ahead regarding him, in LANDON which I’m writing now, as well as in future books in the series. One of my favorite things about him is his unwavering loyalty to Jill, the Alpha’s human mate.

  1. Aydarr commands respect. I like how Flo shows that. She has to be scared out of her mind. If I were her, I’d be touching that spot on her neck. Good thing she has better self-control.

  2. that handshake really solidifies the trust here, really nice touch. Sounds like Flo’s not too comfortable with the AI implant yet, though, and those things do have a tendency to lead to trouble…
