If you haven’t read any of my Badari Warriors series: Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens.

The excerpt, continuing on from where I stopped last week. Mandy is venturing deeper into the lab complex, to check on a person she’s seen on the security console vidscreen, trapped in a medlab.  She’s removed all the sensors and tubes but now ias debating how to move him – he’s seven feet tall and easily 300 lbs.

Her odd state of calm or disassociation or whatever it was her brain was doing to allow her to keep functioning in this charnel house threatened to crack wide open. Whimpering, she leaned on the wall and counted her breaths to regain control.

Regaining her willpower to continue, she forced herself to open the next door, although more slowly, and was pleased to see antigrav litters stacked against the wall. Grabbing the first one plugged into a charging station, she dragged it into the main lab and studied the controls, eventually figuring out how to activate it. The litter hummed and rose into the air on its cushion of antigrav impulses. She steered the device to the table where the man lay, “I wonder how much weight these things can handle?” Hands on her hips, she assessed her unconscious companion.  And how I’m going to move you onto the litter.

Mandy drank another container of nutrient fluids, becoming more energetic and clear headed by the minute, although her body ached from the aftereffects of the experiment on her a few days ago. Chewing the edge of an already ragged nail, she debated whether to go to the storerooms she’d passed and pack herself a backpack with supplies, as well as finding clothes to fit her. Ought she to do those errands before she tried moving the man?

VS: And a bit more to finish the sequence:

But she’d never be able to force herself to return to the depths of the building once she left the area. Her horror was increasing by the passing minute and she was desperate to be out of the death trap. “All right then, we’ll do the foraging together, on our way out the door.” Standing beside the table, she studied the man’s face, observing he seemed to be breathing more easily, so perhaps the drugs were leaving his system. What kind of experiment had the Khagrish had been running on him?

landonThe blurb: When unexpected circumstances give her a chance to escape from an alien scientist’s lab after she’s been tortured, Mandy Rennegar knew she should run for the hills with the other prisoners. There’s one more special captive who hasn’t been freed, however, and she decides to risk everything to help him. Mandy’s not leaving anyone behind.

Captured by the enemy on a scouting trip, Landon of the Badari has been pushed beyond his limits of sanity and strength by the Khagrish experiments and waits to die…until the human woman sets him free and takes him into the wilderness with her on a desperate trek to freedom. If he could only regain his memory, he’s sure there’s a sanctuary on the planet where his people could help them both.

As Mandy and Landon flee the pursuing Khagrish new challenges arise, including secrets from the past which could destroy the growing attraction between them. Difficult choices have to be made, putting Mandy’s life at risk and Landon discovers the Khagrish have left a lasting mark on his mind.

Will they reach the Badari sanctuary in time? Can their love survive Mandy’s revelations? Will the Alpha of the Badari give them a chance to be together or will he allow her to die when Landon risks everything to save his fated mate?

  1. Eek! You always leave me on the edge of my seat with the continuation of this scene! I want them both to make it out of there safely before more Khagrish arrive. Great, as always!

  2. So much suspense! I think her fear is a result of her mind clearing. Those sicko Khagrish must drug them to keep them fuzzy-headed so they don’t resist so hard. Or not. lol. I am rooting for her, but life is never so simple… Great snippet!

  3. She’s braver than I am! Well done! You can feel the churning of her fear against her strong will.

  4. You make me feel her desperation and determination not to leave this man behind yet get out of there. Great snippet.

  5. After what is sounds like she’s been through, I’d be more than anxious to get out of there too! Stopping to rescue someone else must have taken real courage.

  6. I love how her character is being built before our eyes. Weakness with a narrow strip of fine steel running through her that makes her a heroine. Great snippet!

  7. Thanks for visiting and for all the comments! People have mentioned wanting Mandy to hurry up, so I feel like I’ve done my job because that’s what I was going for in this part of the book – that dread when you know you have to hurry because disaster may happen at any moment…and she’s still quite weak and in pain from an earlier experiment the Khagrish performed on her, so she can only move so fast. It doesn’t last forever, I promise!
