VS Note: YAY! Exciting to have a new Icehome tale from Ms. Dixon.
Life has taught me that I can’t trust anyone. Not friends, not family. In the worst, darkest moments, no one can be counted on to have your back. Even a billion miles away from Earth, on a remote icy planet, I still feel alone. The only consolation? I haven’t resonated. It’s not that I don’t want love or children. I just can’t trust anyone, even myself. But then one day, my khui resonates, and it’s to the last guy I ever expected. In fact, I resonate so hard that my chest is singing its mating song before his does. That never happens. So what does a calm, rational, grown woman do when life turns upside down? She runs for the hills, of course. I should have known he’d follow me. Amazon KU
Zetar: After losing my mate to the disease, I promised never to love another. Then I meet Josie. She’s full of fire, and she tests my patience. I can’t decide if I want to storm away from her or kiss her—something that’s completely forbidden. But when she’s kidnapped by the vicious duskhorde, I go after her. I’ll stop at nothing to bring her back to her daughter, though I don’t dare bring her back for myself. Josie: When my thirteen-year-old daughter and I moved to Ferlaern, I had hoped to find love. I don’t expect to fall for a guy eleven years younger than me. I’m a thirty-eight-year-old woman, for heaven’s sakes, not a blushing teenager. But Zetar sure makes my face—and other parts of me—hot. And despite the fact that he irks the H-E-double-hockey-sticks out of me, he also makes me dream of lounging in bed with him on a Sunday morning. Then I’m kidnapped by the duskhorde. If I don’t get free, Zetar and I will never find our happy ending. Amazon KU

Neither is getting rescued by a scorchingly hot dragon that makes her think of an impossible future. But they have no chance together if they can’t first escape a planet full of monsters intent on their destruction.

Then Eve is summoned away to a nearby building site to view more remains—in this case decades old, adorned with gold jewelry and fine clothing—unearthed by recent construction work. Tikkot – My clan had harbored the enemy from the stars. We had something they wanted, so we struck a deal that had turned sour. Now that our end of the bargain was due, we were scrambling for an alternative payment when one, literally, dropped out of the sky. So, I was sent on a mission to deliver our end of the deal. But the more of the truth I learned, the more wrong my mission felt. Then there was her. Isobel. An unexpected and delectable complication who hated the very sight of me.
My mission had changed with the beat of my awakened heart, and now I must convince my spirit mate she was mine, find a way to join the exiles to help save Valose, all while saving my clan from itself. Isobel – There was nothing worse than an arrogant man. Yet, Tikkot wasn’t a man but a Valosian warrior from a rival clan with a cocky smirk and a sultry stare. I had no reason to trust him and no reason to like him. So then, why did my heart flutter every time our eyes met? My goal to return home had never wavered. Yet, the longer I remained on this world, the more unreachable my goal seemed. The planet of Valose was insanely dangerous even before the addition of the gray aliens. Then, just when I thought nothing more could possibly happen to me, Tikkot tossed me over his shoulder, caveman style, stealing me away.

When he sees me, he goes into a berserker rage. But if I want to survive, I have to risk it. I have to enter the cage of the beast. Amazon KU
Wesley: I’ve always loved space. Give me Star Trek over Lord of the Rings any day. Since I was a kid, all I’ve wanted is to explore the great beyond, to boldly go and all that jazz. And with my feet firmly stuck on Earth, the way I reach for the stars is through developing video games. The biggest issue there? Well, I can’t keep a job beyond one project. But all that staring at the night sky finally gets me somewhere when a tractor beam drops down from the sky in the Appalachian mountains and drags me up into an incredible spaceship full of big, scary, delicious-looking alien warriors. I’ve always fantasized about seeing the universe, but the reality—a handsy, grinning warrior—is so much more than I bargained for. Jax: I have a problem—I am the son of Zul the Proeliator, greatest Thorzi warrior, and I have had no chance to honor my legacy on the battlefield. When our people were dying out, they took human mates and produced a generation of hybrid children. But the hybrid sons of the planet Thorzan are protected, privileged, and wasted. All my life, I have been companion and protector to Prince Kaelum instead of a proper warrior. And now my enemies have come to believe that a younger generation of spoiled hybrids makes Thorzan ripe for invasion. When attack comes, it’s closer to home than expected, and I may be forced to choose between duty and protecting the beautiful man whose bright mind has caught my heart. Amazon KU
VS Note: LGBT+. Listed in Erotica. At 25K words I told the author I would consider it to be a novella, not really a short story.
On Earth, we call them the Skyscrapers, or Whalemen. Giant, hundred-foot tall creatures that are generally docile but have a nasty habit of taking people home as souvenirs. I became a whaleman souvenir about, eh, four years ago? Honestly, it’s a great life. We’re like their exotic pets–we’re given fresh, healthy food every day. Hell, our sanctuary is so large it takes almost a full day to walk end-to-end. Toy soldier is a derogatory term for an elven marine. Battles great and terrible, small and bitter, raged across Known Space as the wars of Elves and Orcs played out their legacy of hatred across the stars themselves. Epics would be written, songs would be sung; but wars are fought by real people with loves and families and homes. All Shaundar Sunfall ever wanted to be was a Star-Pilot. Raised on his father’s ship, he has found an affinity for the stars — although as a mixed-race elf and a bit of troublemaker, he often runs afoul of his commanding officers. Now the orcs have returned to once again wage war on their ancient enemies. The fate of his people is at stake. Although he is too young, Shaundar lies about his age to join up. But he is about to learn that no matter what the sagas say, war is no great adventure. A bit like what would happen if Horatio Hornblower met the Honorverse, met Lord of the Rings, met Game of Thrones, A Few Good Elves is part naval adventure, part high fantasy, part space opera, and part war novel.

It is well known that J.R.R. Tolkien published The Hobbit in 1937 and The Lord of the Rings in 1954–5. What may be less known is that he continued to write about Middle-earth in the decades that followed, right up until the years before his death in 1973. For him, Middle-earth was part of an entire world to be explored, and the writings in The Nature of Middle-earth reveal the journeys that he took as he sought to better understand his unique creation. From sweeping themes as profound as Elvish immortality and reincarnation, and the Powers of the Valar, to the more earth-bound subjects of the lands and beasts of Númenor, the geography of the Rivers and Beacon-hills of Gondor, and even who had beards! This new collection, which has been edited by Carl F. Hostetter, one of the world’s leading Tolkien experts, is a veritable treasure-trove offering readers a chance to peer over Professor Tolkien’s shoulder at the very moment of discovery: and on every page, Middle-earth is once again brought to extraordinary life.

But that mission gets more complicated when she meets the dark and alluring Adam Temple, a member of a mysterious order called the Enlightenment Committee. Adam seems to know much more about her than he lets on, and he shares with her a terrifying revelation: the world is ending, and the Committee will decide who lives…and who doesn’t. If Iris wants to learn about her shadowy past, she has no choice but to fight. But the further she gets in the grisly tournament, the more she begins to remember—and the more she wonders if the truth is something best left forgotten.

VS: THe next book in the Badari Warrior backlist is DAEGAN. I had so much fun telling the story of the South Seas Pack and I relished finally giving Flo the kickass mercenary her own chance to shine (and her own Badari mate).

She jumps at the chance to take a dangerous undercover mission. She infiltrates a group of human prisoners on their way to a secret lab in the southern ocean, where the Badari believe many more of their own kind have been created and are being experimented on. Once Flo has located the lab, found the Alpha among the Badari there and sent a report back, the plan will be to attack and rescue all the prisoners.
Arriving at the island Flo learns the true nature of the horrific experiment for which the humans have been brought to this remote location. Time will be perilously short to escape before it’s too late for all of them. She has to locate the Alpha of this captive southern pack, who conceals his identity to escape death at the hands of the Khagrish, and get him to join with her and her allies.
Daegan feels an instant attraction to Flo when the Badari and the humans are forced together by the Khagrish scientists, but there are mysteries and questions surrounding her. Before he reveals himself as the incognito Alpha she’s seeking, he wants answers to allay his doubts. He also wants Flo in his bed…but can he risk his heart to claim her as his mate?
Complicating the situation is a dangerous rival for Daegan’s position as Alpha, an oncoming hurricane and Flo’s resistance to abandoning her life as a soldier of fortune…as the Khagrish scientists prepare to initiate the experiment, the clock is ticking for humans and Badari alike.
LINKS TO RECENT NEW RELEASES POSTS from Veronica:
“New” is generally plus or minus a week or two. I try to catch up on ones I missed in recent months. And I may mention ‘special items’.
I do NOT cover every single new release in SFR/FantasyR/PNR. I never have. That would be an impossible task for any human! I assemble my list by hand every week based on various informal inputs, and I do curate the list to some extent…
Some authors aren’t in KU but still don’t list books with Apple or other platforms. This report is very time consuming to prepare so I’ve always had to limit myself and cannot go and look up every book on all the platforms. If an author gives me their other buy links, I include them here but generally I develop the post on my own, not from author-supplied information. I curate and prepare this post individually every week to help connect readers/books/authors and I have to be very careful not to give it so much time as an activity that I don’t write my own novels! Thanks for the feedback and happy reading!
I check and verify all the buy links at the time I create the post but after that I’m not responsible.
