Here’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central
page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)
I’m now taking excerpts from my recently published book in the award winning Badari Warriors series, REEDE’S MISSION TO THE SECTORS. It can be read as a standalone (mild spoilers for first book, REEDE.)
Continuing with Fallyn’s quest to buy a used spaceship…
The excerpt, as she takes ownership:
Fallyn was surprised at the near anxiety attack she endured once she had the chit of ownership and the required tech to unlock the ship and officially notify the Roxy’s artificial intelligence she was now the authority. Vallington was matter of fact and a bit rushed, with other customers waiting in his office and she supposed once he had the credits in his account, he didn’t care, despite his claims of valuing his reputation for customer service. They shook hands and he dispatched a flunky to drive her to the Roxy, which she appreciated as it was already hot, even in early morning.
The mechanic didn’t wait to make sure she could access her ship, but thundered away in the groundtram as soon as Fallyn had hoisted her kitbag out of the cargo compartment.
Dropping her worldly possessions to the pavement, she stood with her hands on her hips and surveyed her new home. “You certainly are a trim ship.” She made a complete circle of the vessel in a leisurely march, verifying the punch list of tasks Vallington had agreed to complete on the exterior was done. I never felt like this about any of my Survey ships. But they’d been temporary homes, owned by the Sectors military, not her personally and while she’d been fond of her ships, and proud to be part of a two person team on each, this bit of high tech represented her entire life’s savings and her veteran’s acres benefit.
Yeah, we’d better do good things together. I risked it all on this choice.
VS: Next week we’ll actually meet the ship’s Artificial Intelligence. I thought we needed this snippet today for context first.
REEDE’S MISSION TO THE SECTORS: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL (SECTORS NEW ALLIES SERIES BOOK 15) by Veronica Scott
Reede’s people sent him to the Sectors on a desperate mission to beg for help against overwhelming odds in their battle to destroy the alien scientists who created them centuries ago. He knew the task wasn’t going to be easy but as a Badari Warrior, he vowed to do his best. When he’s arrested by the border patrol and thrown in the brig, things go from bad to worse. He faces difficult choices ahead and unimaginable obstacles to making his case to the authorities for help.
Fallyn is Reede’s human fated mate but also the active duty military scout who guided him to the Sectors from his own planet. Reede’s choices after his arrest put her in a difficult spot and his actions threaten their mate bond. Will she give up her career to help him and the Badari succeed in making a treaty with the Sectors?
The desperate attempt to find new allies takes Reede and Fallyn on a wild set of adventures across the sprawling interstellar Sectors civilization and places them, their friends and their love in harm’s way.
Pride of ownership makes a difference, I think. This was a nice snippet, and I hope the Roxy works out for her. Looking forward to meeting the AI next week.
You can almost imagine her kicking the tires. I remember the feeling when buying my first car–a 1968 Toronado that was nearly a block long and went from 0-to empty in 8 seconds – premium! Your first is always the one that gives you the freedom and independence to strike out on your own. Reach for those stars, Fallyn!!
Your first car is such a magical moment- I’m guessing your first spaceship is the same.
Tweeted.
Love how you show all she is going through while taking possession of her new ship! Definitely a big investment, and I hope it gets her where she needs to be.
Buying a first spaceship is just the same as buying your first car or house! It’s a very special feeling to have that place or mode of transport all your own.
Love the parallelism to purchasing a new car. Walking around, only thing that is missing is kicking the tires. 😉 Great snippet.
Fallyn’s excitement (and hints of uncertainty) come through so well here… It was like going through buying our first house all over again.
What a great snippet to convey her feelings regarding the purchase of her first ship. enjoyed the read.
