Alexis Glynn Latner on How SciFi Explores New Ways of Being Human

Veronica sez: Alexis is one of the eight other authors in the Pets In Space anthology (PISA)! So happy to have her as my guest today – I always love discussions that touch on classic science fiction stories.

Alexis: One way to understand science fiction (by which I mean mostly in written form, not media – the traditions of novels from Frankenstein to now, by writers who take science into account) is that science fiction is the genre that explores new ways of being human – mutants, cyborgs, new societies, genetically engineered variants, clones and more.

It also explores new ways of being humans’ pets.

My own contribution to the tradition, so far, is genetically engineered unicorns in a spinning interstellar amusement park.  Prince the unicorn is something of a pet – but possessive enough of the story’s heroine to consider the hero something of a rival.

agl-blog-9bInterestingly, in some classic SF – including 1950’s and 1960’s juvenile or YA SF – I come up with rather a lot of instances where the “pet” is either symbiotic or sentient. For example, there are bouncy, furry basketball-sized creatures that turn out to be the juvenile form of an ancient civilized race on Mars in Robert Heinlein’s Red Planet. The individual the reader meets, the pet a boy has named named Willis, is a remarkably memorable character.  In Battle on Mercury by Lester del Rey, there is an energy creature of a kind called Wispies. It was named Johnny Quicksilver by the boy who befriended it.  It turns out to be intelligent, and an ally against a similar but nonsentient, destructive species called Demons. By the end of the book Johnny is communicating through a robot. There’s an Alan agl-blog-9aNourse book whose hero is a young alien medical doctor, who has a small symbiotic blob that always sits on his shoulder and turns out to be more vital than the reader knew. And there is an alien cat who turns out to be not only telepathic, but a member of an intelligent though predatory race on an alien planet colonized by mankind. This isTick-Tock the Crest Cat in James Schmitz’s story “Novice”.

In addition there are cats or dogs or other species morphed into human form. Some of the memorable first of these were Cordwainer Smith’s Underpeople. Anyone who read his tales may find it hard to forget the beautiful C’Mell, who was genetically engineered from a agl-blog-9ccat, or the saintly D’Joan – who ends up being a version of Joan of Arc in “The Dead Lady of Clown Town.”

All of these stories formed my SFFnal outlook when I was young and led to me finding it easy and fun to write about pets in space.

SF has an enduring fascination for pets that are not pets, more than pets, and more mysterious than they are taken for at first.  What a lot of great stories this implies!  Many of them have long since been written, and done well. Some of them are in our PISA Anthology. And many of them haven’t been written yet!

And the blurb for Alexis’s story, ‘Spike’:

Young Roboticist Ten Jaxdown has to deploy, and possibly sacrifice, the swarm of investigative robots that he has invented and cares about more than anything else in the star system. It may be the only hope for those depending on him and his robots to save them. Yet, even as frantic preparations for the unprecedented deep-space rescue mission are set in motion, it could all be threatened by sabotage.

Musings on HBO Westworld Episode One

teddy-and-doloresI’m not going to recap HBO’s ‘Westworld’ episode one “The Original” in minute detail  but I did have some thoughts, both as I was watching it and later.

The first thing that struck me is how very much like “Jurassic Park” the plot structure is. I guess that’s not surprising since Michael Crichton’s story telling style is at the root of both. Big, elaborate high tech park, with ‘hosts’ instead of dinosaurs, although the hosts are just as deadly and just as underestimated. The elderly, quirky founder-creator, actor Anthony Hopkins character Robert Ford in this case, who maybe loves his creations a bit too much. Luke Hemsworth’s Ashley Stubbs the security chief who thinks the management underestimates the danger but sticks around to collect the paycheck and be involved in the cutting edge situation. Theresa Cullen, played by Sidse Babbett Knudsen, seems like the equivalent of the lawyer in JP but much, MUCH more dangerous. A jaded, cigarette-smoking corporate shark.

But where’s the Jeff Goldblum Malcolm figure to sound the alarm early on?

And a Dr. Alan Grantlike character to inject a few moments of humor (remember his computer issues in JP? And aversion to kids?), derring-do and above all, common sense.

I miss the fact that you can’t tell for sure who’s a host versus who’s a guest. I suppose it’s to heighten the dramatic tension but I think in a way it has the opposite effect. I tend to feel like everyone is a host, running through their stories for the amusement of the creator maybe (ooh). In the old version of the story, the character we followed was a guest, so he was there as us. Now we’re relating more to the hosts, especially Dolores. How much are we going to care when the hosts start killing the guests? Not too much. And so far the WW staff is so unlikable we aren’t going to care when they go down either.

I could watch Evan Rachel Wood all day and I want to be besties with Dolores, the character she plays. They’ve made her so relatable. When she casually slaps that fly in the last scene, oh boy! Serious trouble ahead. Well done foreshadowing.

I do like the new spin on the worldbuilding, that the hosts are slowly becoming self-aware, noticing anomalies about themselves and their world, remembering things…I’m on their side already!

I miss Roman World and Medieval World, although I suppose if this series does well there could be spinoffs. And I can see why HBO wouldn’t spend the money to create those worlds right now.

I think they should STOP having any storyline which includes children. I don’t buy the idea that you can run a family friendly vacation spot where people bring their kids AND also have the violent Wild West scenarios we’ve concentrated on mostly. That’s a big huh? For me.

I get that there are supposed to be layers upon layers upon layers here. As they said in one scene, the guests see one thing, the staff sees another, the stockholders see another and…management evidently has serious PLOTS going on. Total world domination maybe? Jurassic Park had that whole other island where herds of dinosaurs were being created. I’m not convinced as yet about WW and what the plots could be. Mind transfer into immortal bodies maybe?

The actors are doing a marvelous job, especially the ones called upon to play glitching hosts. Wow.

I loathe the gunslinger serial killer conspiracy theory guy. Absolutely loathe him and not for the reasons the showrunners probably want. Yeah he does awful things to the poor hosts but he seems a very grafted-on plot element here to me. I don’t care what he wants to know or why he does what he does.  (Is he a simple psychopath?) And I do love actor Ed Harris, who has played some of my favorite characters in movies over the years, so I’m not criticizing him. Yul Brynner’s  Man in Black gunslinger in the original movie was an unstoppable force and the very fact that he didn’t talk much made him truly scary.

I have a feeling actor Jeffrey Wright’s character Bernard Lowe the chief programmer is probably not as nice as he seems. He’s like a favorite uncle right now but I just don’t trust him.

Raise your hand if you can’t wait for that army of deactivated hosts down on icky level B83 to wake up and start killing people? Probably with Dolores’s unhinged Dad who just wants to protect her as its general. And good old fashioned Cowboy Bill probably gets to kill or at least seriously menace his fond creator.

Why does Westworld have all those abandoned levels?

The guests so far are unpleasant and/or buffoons.  Or seemingly somewhat out of their depth, like the family who met Dolores by the river.

The guest who ended the town shootout scenario early reminded me of the doomed guest in Medieval World who thought he was going to defeat the Black Knight and have sex with…uh, marry the Queen. Yeah, he came to a bad end.

The behind the scenes glimpses are creepy and interesting, like the ones in the original movie were, and I get the advanced 3D printing technology going on but I’m not sold on milk baths. Is that why the one glitching outlaw drinks milk and pours milk on his victims? I’m always more fascinated by the behind-the-scenes than I am what’s happening in those scenarios out in the Wild West Fake town.

I get that the player piano restarting is the beginning of each day. And how effective to use a player piano, one of the first ‘automated’ devices. But I miss the scenes in the original movie where all the hosts stop and the crew comes out to pick up the ones that need repair. We did see a bit of that after the rampage shootout in the village though. I need moar behind the scenes stuff!

Wow, that blond girl sharpshooter is deadly – we’ll see more of her I bet. Perhaps she’ll turn on the clunky guest who shot her? I wonder what her backstory is supposed to be?

Yeah, good idea to give the hosts ‘reveries,’ when the very name implies dreaming or fanciful musing. A subconscious busily thinking its own thoughts below the programmed WW story lines to amuse guests. Interesting choice of upgrade.

I can’t wait for the moment all the verbal controls fail and don’t work anymore. The WW workers are so casual about using them to paralyze a host, and feeling safe in doing so.

The guy playing the scenario writer Lee Sizemore is overacting. Tone it down, dude. I had to grit my teeth when he was on screen. I’m sure the actor himself is a charming person but the character is OVER THE TOP.

Actor James Marsdens’  Teddy Flood needs to man up more, which I have a feeling he’ s working on in his reveries. He’s got the instincts but they’re pretty buried at the moment. Who can’t wait to see him throw down his own ineffective popgun and grab a gun (from somewhere) which does work on humans?

Teddy seems a bit obsessed with chivalry but I like the sweet love story between him and Dolores, although she seems much stronger than he is – unequal partners at the moment.

Who the heck drops a photograph on the ground in a remote Western theme park???  I found that totally unbelievable as a plot device to trigger Dolores’s ‘father’ into glitching. Maybe if he’d found a lost cell phone full of photos…

I have the feeling the character played by Thandie Newton could be really important as the story moves forward. She seems to have an edge to her personality already.

I’m intrigued enough to hang around for more. I’ve read in interviews that the showrunners have a theme for each of the five seasons they hope to have, and this season is all about the hosts waking up to who and what they are. Bring it on!

I’m excerpting Hostage To The Stars, which was released in June. Edited from published version. I’ll do one more snippet from it next week, probably Johnny’s first meeting with Sara, and then move on.

Since so many people were concerned what Johnny would do next, once he learned of the existence of the other kidnap victim, he guides the squad of soldiers he’s with, and Ms. Immer safely to the pickup point in the hills, which was his formal assignment. Then he goes to find everyone’s most hated captain. Here’s that snippet.

“Just fyi, I’m goin’ for the other woman,” Johnny said.

“Who the hell do you think you are, sergeant? You don’t get to change mission parameters to suit yourself – I don’t care if you’re in the goddamn Special Forces or not, I gave you a direct order. We’re not going after any other civilians this trip.”

“No, you’re not, I see that,” Johnny couldn’t keep the contempt out of his voice, “In my branch of the service, we don’t leave people behind. In case it’s escaped your notice, I’m not under your command – Special Forces operates independently.”

Holding his pulse rifle where it could conveniently be considered a threat by Captain Scortun if he was feeling paranoid, Johnny backed away.

“We’re not waiting for you,” Scortun yelled, “When our shuttle lands, we’re gone.”

“Good riddance,” Johnny said under his breath, as he faded into the underbrush and slipped away down the steep hillside.

Hostage ToTheStarsFinal-FJM_High_Res_1800x2700The story:

He rescued her from space pirates … but can he keep them both safe from the far greater evil stalking a deserted planet?

Space travel without Kidnap & Ransom insurance? Not a good idea. University instructor and researcher Sara Bridges can’t afford it, so when pirates board her cruise liner, she’s taken captive along with the mistress of a wealthy man, and brought to a deserted planet. When a military extraction team sent to rescue the mistress refuses to take Sara too, she’s left to the mercies of a retired Special Forces soldier, along as consultant.

Reluctantly reactivated and coerced into signing up for the rescue operation to the planet Farduccir where he once was deployed,  Sgt. Johnny Danver just wants to get the job done. But when the team leader leaves one captured woman behind, he breaks away to rescue her himself.

As Johnny and Sara traverse the barren landscape, heading for an abandoned base where they hope to call Sectors Command for help, they find villages destroyed by battle and stripped of all inhabitants. A lone survivor tells a horrific tale of the Sectors’ alien enemy, the Mawreg, returning after being pushed out …

Searching for evidence to give the military, Johnny is captured. He regains consciousness in a Mawreg cage–with Sara next to him. Death is preferable to what the aliens will do to them… And even if they do escape their captors, can they alert the military in time to prevent another invasion of the Sectors?

Last excerpt from Star Cruise: Outbreak, which by the way, just got announced as a Finalist in the “I Heart Indie” contest! WHEE!

I’ve had another book come out since OUTBREAK that never got excerpted here, plus a new one coming in September, so…we’re going to leave  Emily and Jake after today. Thanks for all the wonderful comments and support!

Quite a bit further into the book than we’ve gone in these excerpts, Emily invites Jake to tell her the story of the time they met on the beach at Fantalar. (Edited from the published version.)

He was so surprised by the change of subject that at first he thought he must have heard her wrong. Distressed, he put his glass next to hers on the table and fumbled for the right words. The last thing he wanted to do was ruin the easy, relaxed mood they had going, “No, really, I don’t need to talk about it. I know you don’t like people thanking you for saving their life. I was just one guy out of what? Hundreds you operated on?”

“Too many, for sure. Sectors Command kept throwing men and women into that battle zone, and the enemy kept chewing them up.” She blinked and focused on his face, her blue eyes sparkling, “I want to hear your story of the time you met the Angel of Fantalar.” She rubbed his arm gently, her touch warm and oddly soothing, “I warn you, I probably won’t remember any of it even when you do tell me because I only recall bits and pieces, flashes of those weeks – sometimes I think I’m lucky I made it home knowing my own name.”

StarCruiseOutbreak-FJM_Mid_Res_1000x1500The story:

She saved countless soldiers in the wars … but does she have the weapons to fight an outbreak?

Dr. Emily Shane, veteran of the Sector Wars, is known as “The Angel of Fantalar” for her bravery under fire as a medic. However, the doctor has her own war wounds–severe PTSD and guilt over those she failed to save.

Persuaded to fill a seemingly frivolous berth as ship’s doctor on the huge and luxurious interstellar cruise liner Nebula Zephyr, she finds the job brings unexpected perks–a luxe beach deck with water imported from Tahumaroa II, and Security Officer Jake Dilon, a fellow veteran who heats her up like a tropical sun.

However, Emily soon learns she and Jake didn’t leave all peril behind in the war. A mysterious ailment aboard the Zephyr begins to claim victim after victim … and they must race against time and space to find the cause and a cure! Trapped on a ship no spaceport will allow to dock, their efforts are complicated by a temperamental princess and a terrorist–one who won’t hesitate to take down any being in the way of his target.  If anyone’s left when the disease is through with them…

Taking excerpts from Star Cruise: Outbreak for a few weeks of excerpts….Dr. Shane has been at loose ends since leaving the military and her father’s arranged for her to take a temp job on an interstellar cruise liner. Moving on again, Jake has repeated his invitation to Emily to attend a crew party on the beach deck of the Nebula Zephyr but mentions his experience in the war, on the beach at Fantalar. (Edited slightly from published version.)

Raising her hand as if to physically fend off his grateful remarks, she shook her head, “Can we please not talk about it?”

As if sensing her distress, he took a step back, out of her personal space, saying, “Of course, Doc, whatever you want. The subject can be completely off-limits the rest of your tenure here, unless you change your mind. Our beach on board is totally different, was all I was going to say.”

“Why does anyone want to meet me anyway?”

“You’re one of us, even if only for this leg of our cruise. We’re a team and teams don’t function as well when there’s a big unknown.” He studied her, blue eyes steady. “It’s a belated engagement party for my second-in-command and his fiancée, but no one expects you to bring a gift. Good low-stress way to meet the people –  the focus won’t be on you.”

Reconsider the Party from STAR CRUISE OUTBREAK SciFi Romance

Star Cruise: Outbreak….Dr. Shane has been at loose ends since leaving the military and her father’s arranged for her to take a temp job on an interstellar cruise liner. Chief Security Officer Jake Dilon has repeated his invitation to Emily to attend a crew party on the beach deck of the Nebula Zephyr.

“I wish you’d reconsider about the party – you wouldn’t have to stay long, just let me introduce you to a few folks, grab a plate of food and a beer, and leave.”

Freeing herself from his light touch with a frown, she retreated a step, “Why do you care?”

“I understand why you aren’t too fond of beaches—”

“We were staging the wounded there, on Fantalar, for transfer to the Cassie,” she said, using the nickname the crew had given the battleship she’d been assigned to. “Until the Mawreg attacked and—”

“I know – I was on Fantalar’s beach too.” His voice was quiet.

Alarm bells rang in her mind. Veterans who wanted to thank her for saving them were the worst. She never knew what to say, and in their well-meant words of gratitude, she always heard the unspoken criticism of her failure to save everyone.

That’s 9 separate prizes, to be awarded to commenters on this blog, via random selection. It is possible for one person to be randomly selected to win more than one of each type of prize.

I’m going to pick a somewhat unusual planet and specify Altair 4, as seen in the movie “Forbidden Planet,” which was released to theaters 50 years go (as of this past March). It was the first science fiction movie I ever saw as a child (on the TV late show in black and white) and absolutely fired my imagination as to what was possible – space travel, robots, ancient aliens, invisible monsters, high tech, heroic (and handsome) space captains and romance…oh yes, I was HOOKED. I discovered Andre Norton’s books around the same time and the scifi movie and the scifi books reinforced each other for me, as far as what genre I was most interested in.

Here was the plot synopsis, from the Internet Movie Database:  A starship crew goes to investigate the silence of a planet’s colony only to find two survivors and a deadly secret that one of them has.

Not to mention a cool robot, ancient alien secrets and more…

Here’s the trailer:

Moving on from the sick pet incident in sickbay in last week’s excerpt, Jake’s going to report to the captain and one of his staff joins him.

“So, how was the doc? Did meeting your angel go the way you expected? You were pretty excited about it at coffee this morning.”

Wishing he’d kept his mouth shut about the subject of his fascination with Dr. Emily Shane, Jake said, “She’s strung pretty tight. I never even told her we’d met before.” He gave Red a sideways glance. “I’d appreciate it if you don’t mention it to her when you meet her. She obviously didn’t remember, and why would she?”

“Yeah, conditions weren’t optimal at the time,” Red said.

Her father switched to wheedling, “It’s the Nebula Zephyr, honey, top of the line. What could be so bad about a couple of months on a luxury cruise? Prescribe headclear to people who drink too much, apply skinseal to kids’ banged-up knees, have fun the rest of the time. You’d be in space.” He said the latter as if the concept was an irresistible enticement.

Now he’d given her something on which to anchor her rejection. “I hardly think a military doctor is the right fit for a civilian ship full of pampered rich people. Even if the captain is desperate for a chief medical officer—”

“Beyond desperate – he can’t sail without one who has active space certifications, and you’ve kept your licenses current.”

            Damn it, she had.

Sadly Unprepared Weekend Writing Warriors

WeWrWa(No new release to report this week LOL!)

Here’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriorscentral page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

I’m going to finish this scene from LADY OF THE STAR WIND today! Then we’ll move on next week because I have two other new releases out there.

Mark and his companions, including the unconscious Sandy, have been rescued by a clan of desert-dwellers. They’ve taken refuge in the underground village to wait out the sandstorm, before attempting to continue their trek to the Lost City. After treating Sandy as best they can for the snakebite, the chief takes Mark to show him the scrolls from the ancient library, rescued from the Lost City, including one depicting  a snake such as Mark has described, but which the chief insists is a myth. Mark is speaking now. Edited from the published version.

“I’m out of my depth here. I’m a soldier, you know? I can take a collection of hard facts and make them add up like a stack of bricks. You want to attack some kind of fortress, I’m your man. You want someone assassinated or kidnapped, I can do it. But what am I supposed to do with this kind of magical construct, how do I use it to help Sandy? Do I go back there and tell her to wake up, quit faking it, because, hey, you were bitten by a mythological snake, not a real one?” He bit his lip against the flood of words. Panic over the possibility of losing Sandy was uncomfortably close to the surface of his emotions.

Jagrahim inserted the scroll into a jar with others and fastened a thin leather cover over the opening, knotting a string around the jar’s neck, “I regret having confused you more than I helped – you and your Lady of the Star Wind are sadly unprepared for what you’ve found upon your return to our world.”

Lady of the Star WindFinal-FJM_High_Res_1800x2700The story:

Are they merely luckless lovers … or a legend come back to life?

Mark Denaltieri, ex-Sector Special Forces, has been hired by the Outlier Empress to rescue her granddaughter, Princess Alessandra, from kidnappers.
