I’m now taking snippets from my newly released novel STAR CRUISE STAR SONG.

The snippet from close to the beginning of the book. Addy is at the spaceport on her way to join her new spaceship, the Nebula Zephyr cruise liner:

Addy passed a robo kiosk selling feelgoods and snacks and gasped as a man stepped out from his position slightly behind the unit, grabbing her by the arm. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said, speaking quickly, right into her ear. “I mean you no harm. I need a favor. You’re on the crew?”

She stared at him, not quite ready to scream and make a fuss yet—Addy avoided becoming the center of all eyes whenever possible. He was tall and scruffy around the edges, and had a battered leather satchel and an oddly shaped instrument case waiting in the spot where he’d been lurking. Under the beard and brown hair caught back in a messy braid, he was handsome and his eyes were breathtakingly blue. She blinked, mesmerized because she’d never seen anyone with such gorgeous eyes.

He glanced past her to the crowd milling around close to the gates and clenched his jaw. “Listen, miss, I’m a passenger—I can show you my ticket if you like—but I need help getting on board without a lot of undue attention. If you’ll walk with me and pretend to be my girlfriend for ten minutes, get me inside the crew shuttle, I’ll buy you the best dinner available on board the Nebula Zephyr tomorrow night. Deal?”

“Oh,” she said, understanding dawning. Addy studied the noisy hubbub nearby. “All of them are waiting for you?” He didn’t look like a celebrity other than when it came to his beautiful eyes. Maybe he’s a famous criminal. Either way he’s a passenger and customer service is our line’s hallmark.

VS: I’m skipping next week due to the holiday but will be back with more snippets in January. Happy holidays!

I’ve Been Bored Weekend Writing Warriors

I’m now taking excerpts from my recently published book in the award winning Badari Warriors series, REEDE’S MISSION TO THE SECTORS. It can be read as a standalone (mild spoilers for first book, REEDE.)

This will be the last excerpt from REEDE’S MISSION TO THE SECTORS as I just had a new release STAR CRUISE STAR SONG (see details at the very end of this post). I’ll be taking excerpts from that after today.

The excerpt (Fallyn meets the Roxy)

Fallyn made her way to the cockpit, sat in the pilot’s chair and inserted the ownership chit in the proper receptacle. There was a chiming sound and Roxy spoke to her in a pleasant midrange tone of voice.

“Enter ownership and authority code.”

A military AI couldn’t have been more matter of fact. Fallyn did as requested and was startled when a noisy fanfare blasted over the coms. A tiny holo suddenly appeared in the center of the flight deck, sending Fallyn’s adrenaline soaring.

“Welcome to my ship,” the woman said. “Well, your ship now, I guess. I’ll miss her but it was time for me to trade up. Roxy never let me down and she’ll have your six too.” One hand on the butt of the blaster at her hip and eyes narrowed, the figure shook her finger at Fallyn. “Treat her right—if I ever hear she’s been disrespected or sold for scrap I’ll hunt you through the galaxy and put an end to you.” The holo gazed around at the interior of the cockpit and sighed. “May you only have clear skies and fair stars to steer by. Lords of Space watch over you.”

And she was gone.

Fallyn blinked.

“I’m Roxy,” the ship said, now adopting an informal tone, voice cheerful. “Welcome. I’ve been bored sitting here waiting for a new owner authority.”

I’m now taking excerpts from my recently published book in the award winning Badari Warriors series, REEDE’S MISSION TO THE SECTORS. It can be read as a standalone (mild spoilers for first book, REEDE.)

Continuing with Fallyn’s quest to buy a used spaceship…

The excerpt, as she takes ownership:

Fallyn was surprised at the near anxiety attack she endured once she had the chit of ownership and the required tech to unlock the ship and officially notify the Roxy’s artificial intelligence she was now the authority. Vallington was matter of fact and a bit rushed, with other customers waiting in his office and she supposed once he had the credits in his account, he didn’t care, despite his claims of valuing his reputation for customer service. They shook hands and he dispatched a flunky to drive her to the Roxy, which she appreciated as it was already hot, even in early morning.

The mechanic didn’t wait to make sure she could access her ship, but thundered away in the groundtram as soon as Fallyn had hoisted her kitbag out of the cargo compartment.

Dropping her worldly possessions to the pavement, she stood with her hands on her hips and surveyed her new home. “You certainly are a trim ship.” She made a complete circle of the vessel in a leisurely march, verifying the punch list of tasks Vallington had agreed to complete on the exterior was done.  I never felt like this about any of my Survey ships. But they’d been temporary homes, owned by the Sectors military, not her personally and while she’d been fond of her ships, and proud to be part of a two person team on each, this bit of high tech represented her entire life’s savings and her veteran’s acres benefit.

Yeah, we’d better do good things together. I risked it all on this choice.

VS: Next week we’ll actually meet the ship’s Artificial Intelligence. I thought we needed this snippet today for context first.

Continuing with Fallyn’s quest to buy a used spaceship…

The excerpt:

With a mental gulp, Fallyn gave her final offer. The knowledge she literally couldn’t pull even one more credit from anywhere stiffened her spine and she hoped Damin was good enough at reading people to realize this truly was her bottom line. She had to keep a reserve to fund her search for Reede.

Slapping the desk exuberantly, Damin said, “Accepted! Ms. Damara, you’ve made a wise choice. Just paperwork and red tape to go through and of course the small detail of you transferring the credits to my business account and you’ve got yourself a ship.” He extended his hand. “Congratulations.”

Nevertheless the process of finalizing the deal took two hours and Fallyn had to remain on guard constantly not to be agreeing to any extras. She read the entire sales contract, lined out a few things, had to threaten to walk away from the deal entirely once and they were done.

She owned her own interstellar ship.

Dazed, she allowed Damin to escort her from the office to the groundtram stop. “We’ll have her ready for you by noon tomorrow,” he said, shaking her hand one more time before he ambled across the pavement to his place of business. “Get her off my lot or pay daily rent after that.”

“I’ll be here early,” she said, wishing she could simply take the ship now and be on her way. Red tape and paperwork was the bane of her existence in the military and as a civilian.

The excerpt (Damin is the salesperson and he’s just named his price for the Roxy):

With relief Fallyn thought she could negotiate his opening number down to a sum she could afford and countered. Damin pretended to be horrified she expected him to basically give her such a prime little ship and quoted his next price with much grumbling and practiced blather about how the fact she was a veteran and he respected her service was making him take leave of his senses. Negotiation was one of her core skills and Fallyn was at ease with Vallington so she ignored his hyperbole.

“Why do you want to sell her to me so badly? What’s the fatal flaw I’m missing?” she asked.

Eyeing her as he considered his answer, Damin nodded. “Fair question. Don’t worry, the Roxy’s not a clunker. Told you my reputation matters to me more than any one sale and I meant it. Honestly? The previous owner made so many damn customizations like the pretty rosebushes you were admiring in hydroponics and a few other much more serious idiosyncrasies—all of which are fully detailed in the information file I gave you access to—that my crew is going to have to spend a lot of time ripping out and redoing. No offense but more experienced mercs aren’t going to give the Roxy a second glance even then. She’s a good ship for a novice in the trade.” He raised one hand in case she was going to protest. “Not saying you don’t have extensive military experience but you are starting as a rookie mercenary.”

Not offended in the least, especially as she actually had no plans to pursue the mercenary career, Fallyn nodded and waited.

“So if I can turn her over right away, as is, it’s a win-win for me. I’ll make my month end sales goals too.” Damin sat back in his chair and waited like a fisherman who knows he’s cast an irresistible lure.

Continuing with Fallyn’s quest to buy a used spaceship…

The excerpt (Damin is the salesperson):

“We can take her up,” Damin offered. “I’ll need a few minutes to get clearance from the spaceport control but you should do a test drive, to satisfy yourself. I assume your pilot’s license is current? I’ll need to see proof.”

Fallyn showed him her credentials as a military pilot and did indeed take the Roxy for a short flight, remaining within the atmosphere. “We don’t allow test drives in space,” Damin said apologetically. “Did I mention we provide a full warranty for the first ten million lightyears at no extra charge?”

Choking on a laugh, Fallyn said, “If anything goes wrong out there it’ll be a challenge to return here to use the warranty but I appreciate the thought.”

Now the salesman acted hurt. “Hey, we have a five star rating with the Mercenary Guild and less than a 1% problem rate. Satisfied customers is what I’m all about. You joined the Guild yet?”

She shook her head. The idea had crossed her mind earlier in the day but she wasn’t ready to jump into another organization yet, not even one as loose as the mercenary association. “I need to be a completely free agent for a while.”

“Too bad. Guild members get a 3% discount.” Damin shrugged, watching her pilot the Roxy effortlessly through the required landing pattern and back to her spot on his part of the spaceport. “Seems like you and this ship were made for each other.”

Keeping her tone noncommittal, Fallyn finished the landing and powered down. “I’ve seen enough.”

Leaving the ship behind was hard but Fallyn made the trip to the sales office in silence, doing mental calculations of what the absolute maximum might be that she could afford today. Damin respected her concentration and forbore to offer any more conversation or sales pitches. He offered her another cold drink when she entered his establishment and fended off a couple of his salespeople who had apparently pressing matters to query him about. He ushered Fallyn into his private office, indicating a chair for her pulled up to the desk and seated himself. Flipping his handheld on, he projected a miniature Roxy and named a price.

Continuing with Fallyn’s quest to buy a used spaceship…Fallyn tours the interior…

The excerpt:

He allowed her to precede him up the ramp once it extended and then gave her a tour. The Roxy was obviously an older model but Fallyn appreciated the efficiency of the design and the previous owner had been ingenious with most of her enhancements. The main cabin’s bedroom was luxurious in the extreme and Fallyn didn’t linger there long at all. She had a mental picture of herself and Reede enjoying the amenities but was uncomfortable to be there with the salesman, although he remained in the narrow corridor and didn’t utter a single offensive word. The bridge was laid out well, clearly meant to be handled by one person, although there was a second chair.

Damin gave her a rundown of the weapons systems—“Recharges and reloads extra” —demonstrated the coms and vids and allowed her a lengthy examination of the engines. She was extremely familiar with the newer model of this power unit, which was used in current Survey ships and had no doubt she could maintain the Roxy at peak performance. It was a good, solid propulsion system, which could deliver bursts of speed and handled hyperspace efficiently. The make and model was a workhorse of the star lanes to this day.

The more she checked out the ship and evaluated its potential versus her immediate needs,  the more she wanted to own it and the more she dreaded being told the price was way out of her budget.

The life support system included a tiny hydroponics garden and Fallyn was enchanted to see a tub of flowering bushes included with the more standard biomass.

The excerpt:

“Hang tight here for a minute and I’ll get the specs and the access code.” He retreated to the office and returned juggling a handheld and a container of cold beverage, which he extended to Fallyn. “I think the afternoon heat has been a bit rough on you—”

“Fallyn Damara,” she said, realizing he wanted her name. It was hard not to mention her former rank, which had been such an integral part of her identity for so long. She took the drink gratefully. “Thanks. Shopping for a ship is thirsty work.”

“I’m Damin Vallington, shoulda come to me first,” he said. “Let’s take my scooter. The ship I want to show you is parked toward the far fences. We keep our bigger stock in orbit but of course you’re not in the market for one of those.”

“Not today.” She liked him, although she was conscious he was a salesman through and through, keeping up an artless stream of conversation as he zigged and zagged through the busy yard, past ships she could never afford. He was obviously trying to find out as much about her as he could so he could sell her the ship he was trying to unload and Fallyn prepared herself for a real disaster.

To her surprise, as the vessel he was headed for came into view, she was a trim, efficient ship, built for speed and battle. The hull was dinged and beat up but the lines were good and Fallyn found herself drawn to the craft. “Roxy,” she said, reading the faded name painted on the bow as Vallington brought the vehicle to a stop.

“Just took her in from a gal—a hot handed mercenary who made a big score, bought herself a brand new ship, traded up quite a few notches. Wouldn’t surprise me if she establishes her own team now she’s getting famous in this quadrant. At any rate, I sell new ships as well so I got both ends of the deal. She had the Roxy customized to her own specifications over the years she owned it, so the appeal is a bit limited.” Damin shook his head as they walked around the exterior, checking out the hull. “I could probably sell it to a generational billionaire’s kid who wanted to play at being badass but anyone that rich would buy a new one. Needs work to strip the customizations if anyone but a mercenary takes her on.”

What Have You Gotten Us Into Weekend Writing Warriors

Here’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

I’m now taking excerpts from my recently published book in the award winning Badari Warriors series, REEDE’S MISSION TO THE SECTORS. It can be read as a standalone (mild spoilers for first book, REEDE.)

I’ve moved on a bit in the novel and Reede and his friend Walt are on the run.

The excerpt:

There was a complicated sequence of knocks on the portal to signal the person waiting was indeed Walt and the door slid aside. He stepped into the room, took in Reede’s battle ready stance with approval and said, “We’ll be leaving in five minutes. I found us a way off the planet tonight but you’re not going to like it.”

Holstering his blaster, Reede was a mix of curiosity and dread. “What have you gotten us into now?”

“The much esteemed society of pirates,” Walt said, crossing to the refresher room and closing the door. He could be heard plainly through the thin veneer of the panel.  “We’ve signed onto a ship with a job and unless we want to miss our ride, we have to go now. Trust me, they won’t wait, even if their captain was shorthanded enough to take on two unknown freelancers.” Drying his hands he came into the main room. “I used some of the contacts and backstory Gabe provided me as a fake identity in case we ever needed one. Convinced the captain to hire us. Of course it helped he’s in too much of a time crunch to do any reference checking.”

“Pirates?”  Reede was attempting to take it in, wondering if Walt had taken leave of his senses and was making a bad joke.

“Sure. I mean, the Sectors already have you pegged as a raider, so why not add piracy?” Walt’s answer was light hearted but the look he gave Reede was dead serious. “Listen, you’re a fugitive, a wanted man with a helluva big bounty on his head—I checked—the fake ID I bought for you is pretty thin—and you’re easy to identify with your trideo star worthy face and being so damn tall. The chance you can get off this planet in any legitimate fashion is nil. Our new ride is parked at the edge of the spaceport, the captain has vouched for you and me to the authorities, and we’ll never be coming back here. We’re working for shares. Actually we’re splitting a share.” Walt grimaced. “I wasn’t in the best negotiating position but our military training impressed him. Ready?”

“A share of what exactly?” Reede asked. “What kind of job is he planning? I won’t be a party to harming innocent civilians, no matter what the Sectors thinks of me. I have to maintain the Great Mother’s commandments so I can face her with honor in the afterlife.”

Don’t Waste My Time Weekend Writing Warriors

Here’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

I’m now taking excerpts from my recently published book in the award winning Badari Warriors series, REEDE’S MISSION TO THE SECTORS. It can be read as a standalone (mild spoilers for first book, REEDE.)

The excerpt: I’ve gone a short way into the book, when Reede’s ship has been intercepted by a Sectors Border Patrol vessel. Fallyn Damara is Reede’s human mate and a Sectors Survey Scout. The not so warm welcome-to-the-Sectors continues. Reede and Walt are in a guarded conference room and Fallyn is meeting the captain of the ship they’re on. Suddenly the captain receives a message, terminates his interview with Fallyn and…

The captain strode away, moving fast as if eager to accomplish a task, and the others fell into formation behind him. Fallyn ended up in the center of the guards, as before, and as she proceeded to move through the decks toward the room where Reede and Walt waited, she tried to send her mate a pulse through the mate bond. She was much better at it than she had been but not being a naturally psychic individual, she could only transmit fairly blunt emotions.

Hoping Reede would get the right message, she tried to convey her general unease.

Fallyn’s concern ratcheted up immensely when they reached the area of the conference room and she found a second squad of armed men and women waiting for them. Heedless of military protocol, she sped up and touched the captain’s sleeve. “Sir, why all the security?”

“You’ll see, Lt Damara. No one’s going to get hurt, I give you my word.”

Distrusting his repressed air of excitement, she could only stand back as the door was opened and the first group of soldiers entered, deploying as if breaching an enemy stronghold. The captain motioned for her to precede him and as she entered the conference room, relief flooded over her to find Reede sitting calmly in his chair, unharmed. Walt had risen and moved to stand beside Reede as if to be a bodyguard. The security forces tracked his movement with their hot weapons.

“You’re under arrest for crimes against the Sectors,” Captain Ballard said to Reede, facing him across the table. “No more of this bullshit about being an ambassador and begging for help. Don’t waste my time.”

VS: Next week I’ll probably skip ahead to another scene because it would get spoiler-y otherwise.
