A Rescue Attempt SFR Brigade Presents WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM

I thought I’d keep going a bit longer with excerpts from my 2013 SFR Galaxy Award winning novel WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM, which is a loose retelling of the Titanic sinking, set in the far future on a spaceliner. Nick Jameson, Sector Special Forces operator, has been awakened  in the middle of the night, thrown from his bed by some violent maneuver of the SMT Nebula Dream, which now seems badly damaged. Crew members are nowhere to be seen. He’s gotten a lifeboat loaded with passengers…but he’s had something else on his mind….Mara Lyrae is a woman he met earlier on the cruise and is more than slightly interested in.

Here’s the 200 word excerpt and the story blurb is below the picture:

“Help! I need help – there are people trapped in a cabin on the next level.”

Mara!

Hoping he was right, Nick craned to see who it was. Sure enough, to his great relief, Mara Lyrae came running up to the ring of volunteers at the LB portal. He’d been prepared to search the entire ship for her if necessary, but now here she was.

Sensibly dressed but disheveled, her hair loose around her shoulders, Mara worked her way through the rapidly thinning crowd, gaze locking onto him. “Please, I need someone to come to Level Two.” His men let her through the cordon and she grabbed at Nick’s arm. “I’m so glad you’re still aboard. It’s the family who was on the shuttle with us? I can hear the children crying in their cabin, but I can’t get the door to open far enough to get in. The boy says his mother is trapped under something.” Mara bit her lip, shoving her hair away from her face. “And they can’t get out of the back bedroom, or won’t try.”

After hearing about trapped children, Nick knew he’d stay on board as long as it took to free them. But first, she needs to be safe. “Tell me exactly where on the Second Level and I’ll go. You get in this LB.” Nick reached out to take her by the arm, intending to guide her through the portal.

“No,” She took a hasty step away from Nick, shak­ing her head vehemently. “I promised that little boy I’d come for them myself, as soon as I found their father, or someone. If you’re going to help me with this, then we have to hurry.”

Here’s the story:

 

Traveling unexpectedly aboard the luxury liner Nebula Dream on its maiden voyage across the galaxy, Sectors Special Forces Captain Nick Jameson is ready for ten relaxing days, and hoping to forget his last disastrous mission behind enemy lines. He figures he’ll gamble at the casino, take in the shows, maybe even have a shipboard fling with Mara Lyrae, the beautiful but reserved businesswoman he meets.

Captain and crew abandon ship, leaving the 8000 passengers stranded without enough lifeboats and drifting unarmed in enemy territory. Aided by Mara, Nick must find a way off the doomed ship for himself and several other innocent people before deadly enemy forces reach them or the ship’s malfunctioning engines finish ticking down to self destruction.

 

But can Nick conquer the demons from his past that tell him he’ll fail these innocent people just as he failed to save his Special Forces team? Will he outpace his own doubts to win this vital race against time?

AudioBook Panel at CoyoteCon Transcript

Wreck-of-the-Nebula-DreamFinalMedThis past weekend I had the pleasure of moderating a workshop on audiobooks as part of the online CoyoteCon, which has been occurring during October weekends. Participating in the panel were my friend and fellow Carina Press Author Dee J. Adams, who is also an Actress and has narrated her own audiobooks. We were also privileged to have my friend and collaborator Actor/Narrator Michael Riffle as a member of the panel. Michael narrated my science fiction adventure WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM, as well as a number of other audiobooks.

Our discussion was wide ranging and fun (if I do say so myself) and if you missed it, the transcript of our remarks can be found right here.

Here’s a snippet of what Dee had to say on the subject of narrating her own books:

“There is nothing better than being able to tell your story the way you want people to hear it. There is no error in interpreting a character’s tone or meaning in a certain or sentence. The reader gets to hear it the way I intended them too. There’s nothing better than that. And as a (former) actor it’s a way to keep that love of mine alive. “

“Characters! I think my favorite part of recording audiobooks is giving each character (no matter how small) their own voice. It’s probably the most challenging part, too, because you want everyone to sound unique, but you don’t want to make them unrealistically different! If there are two male characters with similar backgrounds talking to each other they have to sound completely different, but also very similar. It’s a fun challenge. “

SFR Brigade Presents WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM Lifeboats

I thought I’d keep going a bit longer with excerpts from my 2013 SFR Galaxy Award winning novel WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM, which is a loose retelling of the Titanic sinking, set in the far future on a spaceliner. Nick Jameson, Sector Special Forces operator, has been awakened  in the middle of the night, thrown from his bed by some violent maneuver of the SMT Nebula Dream. He’s ventured into the corridor, to find panic raging. (I’ve done a little editing today to fit the word requirement.)

Here’s the 200 word excerpt and the story blurb is below the picture:

The blaring sirens and recorded emergency warnings cut out, resumed briefly and then died away in a slowly fading gibber­ish. The lights in the corridor flickered, causing gasps here and there in the crowd.

“Are there any SMT officers or crew here?” Nick said.

Desperation, fear, and puzzlement on the faces in front of him. Many sidelong glances, mute head shakes.

Silence.

“All right, then. I’m Captain Jameson, Sectors Special Forces. I’m taking charge of this lifeboat portal. You can’t all get into this LB. No one’s going to make it off unless you keep your heads and we go about this calmly and quickly.” He pointed at some likely candidates. “You gentlemen form a ring. No one gets by until I say so. Watch my back while I open this damn portal.”

The men linked arms and established a peri­meter. Nick gave his attention to the locked access. Damn, there should have been at least one SMT crew person at each LB by now, with the unlock code, getting the civilians safely off the ship as fast as possible. Lucky for all these nice people I know how to open the thing.

Nick scanned the portal info display. “Capacity one hundred sentients,” the label declared in Basic and the other five languages. Okay, Jameson, quick, calculate what the limit really means, what the margin of design safety probably was. How many extra oxygen-breathers can I shove onto the thing without killing them all?

I thought I’d switch gears this week a bit and excerpt my 2013 SFR Galaxy Award winning novel WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM, which is a loose retelling of the Titanic sinking, set in the far future on a spaceliner. Nick Jameson, Sector Special Forces operator, has been awakened  in the middle of the night, thrown from his bed by some violent maneuver of the ship. Here’s the 200 word excerpt and the story blurb is below the picture:

The deck pitched violently underneath him, and Nick was thrown the other direction, fetching up against the bed platform shoulder first with bruising force.

Rubbing his shoulder, Nick glared around the cabin. “Ship, what the hell is going on?”

No answer.

The Nebula Dream pitched to starboard, but not as drastically, and then slowly returned to near vertical. Getting cautious­ly to his feet, Nick Wreck-of-the-Nebula-DreamFinalMedgrabbed for his scattered clothes, pulling them on as fast as possible.

“Ship, I want status.” Nick fastened his blue shirt as the deck wobbled underfoot again. The engines are down again, for one thing. Deter­mined to wrest some information from someone, he made his way to the interface panel.

Just as he got there, clinging to the molded desk as the ship shuddered again, the image of Captain Bonlors appeared. Flickering once, the holo stabilized. Amazingly, the captain continued to project unshakable calm. If I hadn’t met the man, I’d be wondering if he was nothing but a well-designed hologram. Reassuring to the passengers or not, no one should be this serene while in charge of a ship pitching and rolling in space like the Nebula Dream.

“Again, I must apologize to you, my passengers,” the image was saying. “We have experienced a small malfunction –”

“Not from where I’m standing, pal,” Nick said grimly. “Small is not the word for it.”

Cover Reveal ESCAPE FROM ZULAIRE

I’m VERY excited to reveal the cover for my new Science Fiction Romance novel, ESCAPE FROM ZULAIRE, which is scheduled to be released in late August. The cover was created by Fiona Jayde, who did the cover for WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM  last year.  The new book is “A Sectors Novel,” which means it’s set in the same universe as the Nebula Dream, but is a stand alone book, with no connection to WRECK. “The women in Wreck of the Nebula Dream are strong in spirit and character.” I hope you’ll forgive me for quoting from a 5 star Amazon review but this was perhaps one of the comments about my book that pleased me the most.  I’ve always enjoyed strong female characters in my science fiction, from Lessa of Pern to Ripley of Aliens. Even in the original 1951 version of “The Thing From Another World,” the character of Nikki may have been the scientists’ secretary but she had guts and grit and would have been in that final battle toe to toe with the alien if the 1950’s guys would have let her. She did participate in one of the early battles with the creature.

I like to think that if I were to find myself in one of those do or die situations, I’d say “Hand me a pulse rifle and get out of my way while I kick some alien butt.”

So when I sit down to write science fiction (or anything else for that matter), I definitely want my story to feature strong female characters.

Now the story in “Wreck” is told entirely from the main character’s POV and he’s a Special Forces guy of the future, suffering from some PTSD, drinking too much, a bit lost…until the spaceliner disaster strikes and he takes action. But Mara, the heroine, is not there to be rescued by him. She makes that clear early on when she refuses his order to get into one of the few lifeboats, but rather insists he come with her to rescue some trapped children…she’s going to accomplish the rescue with or without him. She’s an intergalactic business executive, who came up the hard way and hasn’t forgotten any of the knowledge she acquired. Mara constantly surprises Nick, the hero, with what she knows, how she acts under pressure and how fast she thinks on her feet. (He’s a good guy, honestly, he just assumes civilians won’t be as effective in a crisis as his former military comrades would have been. By the end of the book, he’s thoroughly convinced otherwise and grateful.)

There are several other female characters who play key roles in “Wreck,” including a three year old. I had fun writing them all. The novel is a very loose reimagining of the Titanic disaster and as I was developing the plot within that setting, I tried to imagine who Nick might encounter on a luxury cruise liner of the future.  I like to think Twilka, the Socialite, is maybe the most amusing character (although she frustrates Nick for most of the book) – she’s pretty clueless but even she has her moment to step up and be the crucial link to saving the day.

Weekend Writing Warriors WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM Afterward

better wewriwaSince today April 14th is the 101st anniversary of the Titanic striking the ice berg (the ship actually sank early on the 15th), I’m finishing off the excerpts from WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM, my SFR loosely based on the Titanic tragedy. My thanks to all of you for hanging in there with me as I’ve been excerpting the book for awhile and my special thanks to everyone who’s read the  novel!

I’m giving you the first five sentences from the novel, as Nick is taking the shuttle up to the Nebula Dream, and then the final three at the very end of the book, where the survivors have gathered for one final farewell at a famous restaurant overlooking the ocean (I HAD to get the ocean into a book based on Titanic)…of course a whole heck of a lot happened in between the two excerpts LOL:

Two hours ago, Nick Jameson hadn’t cared when they would leave, or even whether they got space borne in time to join the cruise ship. He was in no rush to get to Sector Hub. Most likely his military career was going to be ending there, after that last disaster of a mission. So why should I worry about reaching the Nebula Dream before she leaves orbit? The next ship would suit me fine. Or even the ship after that.

Nick took one last glance at the peaceful ocean under the three moons as he slid the door to the balcony shut.

Moving on, moving forward, surviving.

Not forgetting, be­cause that would be impossible, but taking the life that was given back to me, to Mara, that night on the Nebula Dream, and making the most of it, for ourselves and for those who weren’t so lucky, on that ill-fated voyage into Sector Seventeen.

Wreck of the Nebula Dream – How to Survive a Cruise Ship Disaster

TitanicWith all the cruise ship problems in the news lately, I’ve been seeing advice articles for what to do if the ship you’re vacationing on suffers a disaster. I collected some of the common questions and decided to see how my characters on the Nebula Dream did, compared to what experts suggest. It may be a bit of a challenge to do without providing spoilers….

Can you make preparations in advance for a cruise ship disaster, just in case? On the Titanic, most passengers and crew totally bought into the unsinkable advertising. There were a few, however, who had misgivings for whatever reason. Perhaps the most famous was Esther Hart, a Second Class passenger who was so concerned, she stayed awake all night every night of the cruise, fully dressed. When the ship ran into the iceberg, she and her daughter Eva got into Lifeboat 14 but her husband remained on Titanic and was lost.  On my ship Nebula Dream, I have one passenger who has such a terrible premonition that she demands to be taken back to the planet. In modern times, the experts recommend having some cash, a working flashlight and a fully charged cellphone.

Should you worry about pirates? Titanic didn’t have this problem. We know in the modern world, there are very active pirates in certain areas of the world and while they might not tackle a huge cruise ship, you should be wary if you’re sailing in dangerous waters in anything smaller and/or slower.  Speed is the best weapon for evading capture by the modern pirate. And on my Nebula Dream? Let’s just say absolutely, pirates become a VERY big problem.

Can you trust the crew? The officers and crew of Titanic are generally credited with heroism and selflessness above and beyond. In many of the recent incidents involving cruise ships with engine problems, the crew’s efforts in staggeringly bad conditions have been spoken of  positively by the passengers. My novel was written years before the infamous Costa Concordia episode, where the captain abandoned ship well before all his passengers were safe. On the Nebula Dream, my hero Nick becomes highly critical of Captain Bonlors fairly early on, shall we say.

1148243_97586918If your ship suffers a disaster, should you be worried about food and water?  From the research I did, it seems a person can probably last 2-3 weeks without food, depending on their condition at the start of the fast. Not that it’s recommended! But water is a much more serious issue. Humans can only go 3-5 days without water. No one really had time to worry about either issue before the Titanic sank, although some bread was tossed into at least one lifeboat by the crew. On Nebula Dream they took some nourishment at one point but for the most part were too busy trying to get off the ship and dealing with other issues to worry about food or water.

Some final thoughts: Several of the advice posts mention that with thousands of people stuck together on a cruise ship having problems, things could get unpleasant, and therefore you might want to stick to your cabin as much as possible. On Titanic there were tales of people getting drunk toward the end and possibly some looting. On Nebula Dream there was definitely some of that happening and Nick found a way to keep his own small band of survivors moving around the ship without running into too many other people.

Perhaps the best advice I read, in more than one place, is trust your own instincts about what to do. Ultimately the person who is most invested in your survival is you. Speaking only of my fictional Nebula Dream, the captain at first tries to minimize the trouble the ship is in and Nick, the hero, is not buying it. He takes action in the ways that seem best to him, trying to save as many of the civilian passengers as he can. (Nick is an active duty special forces operator, traveling aboard the Dream through a fluke.)

Since the Titanic sinking is a legend in my family, as one Second Class passenger who survived  was allegedly a distant relation, I grew up always asking myself the question, now what will I do if (name the situation – fire, earthquake, plane crash, workplace violence) happens. I know where the exits are, I know I’m not stopping to turn off my computer, I have a cache of bottled water and emergency rations at the office and in the car…Nine times out of ten there won’t be a disaster, your cruise will be pleasurable and trouble-free, the Great Quake won’t hit…but just keep that little inner ear attuned to your surroundings and the situation and be prepared!

Weekend Writing Warriors Why Are The Engines Off?

better wewriwaI’m still doing excerpts from my SF novel WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM until April 14th, the 101st anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking but after that I’m switching off to something else. I appreciate all the comments and feedback! This scene occurs in the middle of the second night out, when Nick awakens suddenly, realizing the Nebula Dream’s engines have shut down. He’s just asked the Ship’s AI what’s going on. (Um, it’s really 10 sentences but they’re short and you don’t mind too much – do you? I’ll go back to being good next week, I promise!)

“There’s nothing to be concerned about, Passenger Jameson – we apologize for disturbing your sleep. Please resume your slumbers now, with no further care.” The AI’s voice was smooth, glib as always. “Do you require a sleep inject?”

            “No, I do not,” Nick said, allowing his considerable annoyance to creep into his tone. “Why are the engines off?”
