AN ALIEN FOR CHRISTMAS (EMPATHS OF LYRIA) by Regine Abel
Meet Kathleen: a thirty-six-year-old Plain Jane extraordinaire, with a Ph. D in Xenobiology and another in Spinsterhood. This year, yet again, her sorry self is stuck working on Mars for the holidays. Aside from dodging the unrequited attentions of a certain cringe-worthy bachelor on the station, she mentally prepares for yet another lonely and boring Christmas. But when her sister sends her an early gift in the form of a drool-worthy alien hellbent on fulfilling her every desire, Kathleen isn’t so sure she wishes to stay off the naughty list anymore.
Ever since the Kalixian warriors rescued us from our Orkun captors, I’ve made no secret of the fact that I think these bronze, horned aliens are hot as hell. I have no interest in the whole “fated mate” thing, but I definitely wouldn’t mind a roll in the sheets with any of these men. Well… one man, if I’m being honest. Tycran. There’s something about the stoic, gorgeous alien that draws me in—even though he’s the only one who seems completely immune to my flirtations. I’m not sure why I’m so drawn to him, or why I’ve set my sights on the most unattainable man on Kalix. Maybe it’s because when I get a glimpse behind his stony mask, the spark of passion I see in his eyes makes my pulse pound. I want to be the one to light that spark. I want to show him how much fun it could be to just let loose for once. I’m playing with fire. I know that. But maybe I want to get burned.
They thought I was dangerous before, but now that I have a female to defend… I’m ruthless. Daisy: I’m a glass half-full girl, but this last week has really tested my outlook on life. First of all, aliens exist. Yeah, there’s a doozy. Second of all, they steal humans from Earth, and they’re not nice about it. Like at all. Anger issues abound in other galaxies apparently. My situation worsens when I learn I’m the prize in some really effed-up alien gladiator games. I’m just going to admit it now–my glass is empty, and this doesn’t look good for me… Rexor: Once I was a proud Drixonian Warrior. Now I’m an experiment gone bad and a former gladiator who can’t control his bloodlust. When I see a human female with sunshine hair in danger, I can’t let her fall into the clutches of monsters who will break her. I steal her with the intention of rescuing her, not keeping her for myself. She’s beauty and happiness. I’m a hideous shadow of what I once was and losing my mind with every planet’s rotation. All I know is that while we’re on the run from our enemies, I’ll do anything to protect her. Even if I have to break myself to do it.
Our colonization ship crashed, stranding us on a strange new world. To make matters worse, my best friend disappeared while scouting the area near our crash site.In my search to find her, I’m stolen by a dragon—a creature straight out of every fairy tale book I’d ever read as a child. He takes me back to his kingdom and I’m shocked when he shifts into a man—a fierce Drakarian warrior. He claims that I am his fated one—his Linaya. Despite my protests, he refuses to let me go—and I cannot deny that I’m drawn to him in ways I do not understand. The more time we spend together, I begin to wonder: what would it be like to be fated to a dragon?
Queen Samara Rani knows she’s likely walking into a trap, but agreeing to meet with Commander Adams is the fastest way to get within striking distance of the Quint Confederacy’s biggest traitor and her sworn enemy. Adams attacked her home and destroyed her ship, and if he’s not stopped, he will ruin the tentative peace between the Kos Empire and the Quint Confederacy—and Samara’s chance at future with Emperor Valentin Kos. Samara is determined to serve up some well-deserved payback, but she is no longer a lone assassin, and despite her protests, her friends and allies refuse to let her undertake such a perilous mission without them. Even Valentin, usually the voice of reason, refuses to stay behind. Samara is loath to put her friends in danger, and taking a team carries its own risks, so she makes plans to keep them safe, no matter what the cost. When Adams threatens that safety, and everything she holds dear, Samara vows to show him exactly how she earned her deadly reputation—and why one should never cross the Rogue Queen. Elyse –Okay, I’ll admit, his angsty attitude doesn’t diminish his white-hot appeal. And since our catastrophic introduction he’s done everything but get down on his knees and apologize–oh yeah, that comes later and . . . wow, that apology was hot enough to melt titanium. At any rate, even if I’m falling for the male who’s already my mate, we need to keep our hands to ourselves, right? VS Note: I can’t even imagine how this plot works. Tempted to put it on my TBR list just to find out. A release of note this week…
It all starts on the morning the letter D disappears from language. First, it vanishes from Dhikilo’s parents’ conversation at breakfast, then from the road signs outside and from her school dinners. Soon the local dentist and the neighbor’s dalmatian are missing, and even the Donkey Derby has been called off. Though she doesn’t know why, Dhikilo is summoned to the home of her old history teacher Professor Dodderfield and his faithful Labrador, Nelly Robinson. And this is where our story begins. Set between England and the wintry land of Liminus, a world enslaved by the monstrous Gamp and populated by fearsome, enchanting creatures, D (A Tale of Two Worlds) is told with simple beauty and warmth. Its celebration of moral courage and freethinking is a powerful reminder of our human capacity for strength, hope and justice.

Destiny gives James Martin a second chance at love. Aurora may prove to be more of a hazard to herself than the Sluagh ever were. He has the daunting task of keeping her away from sharp objects, and from ogling his best friend, Nate. Nate Wagner is shocked when Aurora passes the prophesized shifter smell test identifying her as his mate. Sabine Rembrandt is used to being an object of desire. As a former supermodel and a purebred Arabian Gray shifter, she’s had the world’s most powerful men at her feet. But none of them ever saw the real woman. The one behind the stunning face and exquisite form. They only ever saw a wild thing they wanted to break. She refused to be dominated by anyone and left that false, glittering world behind. Even though it cost her everything. Renkin Jones is a black-haired, green-eyed Siberian tiger from backwater Louisiana who speaks Cajun French like it’s the mother tongue. He is also a man who can see below the surface. Intrigued by the mystery of Sabine, a woman with shields he wants to penetrate and walls he wants to tear down, he’s determined to unravel her. Sabine is equally determined to ignore the tiger prowling around, even if she is tempted by all that raw power and quiet strength, and the words he whispers in the night. But when a predator emerges intent on claiming Sabine, it unleashes the tiger’s fury. That’s when she learns sometimes shields fail and walls crumble, that the one man intent on protecting her is the one man who might break her, and that when a tiger has you in his sights . . . all you can do is surrender.
Year Two at Moonstone Academy… The end of year one had been so rocky, I didn’t think I could recover, but I have.

All I want for Christmas is to feel my legs. Because my mates broke me. After years of adoration and love—and lots of intimacy—my guys have a special holiday request. A little fae baby. Like a fool, I agree, but there’s no way I can choose who gets to be the father. So, my guys have come up with a solution. A series of trials will determine who’ll do the deed; namely, one in the bedroom that has me questioning if my lady parts are really up for this. Right now? Yeah, I can’t feel my legs. Except one look at my mates has me caving. The idea of them as dads melts me into a puddle of Claire-goo. Even if their timing can’t be worse. My dream of opening an Interrealm Fae Academy is just within reach. Then my pregnancy arrives with one hell of a twist. I’m going to have to count on my guys more than ever to get me through this mess. Wish my mates luck. They’re going to need it. Because a pregnant fae with control over all five elements is a challenge unlike any they’ve ever faced before. Something tells me this is going to be one unforgettable holiday.

Noah’s winter holiday seasons tend to be busy but uneventful. Most of his time is spent running his mildly magical gift shop and trying not to obsess over Robin, his much too appealing seasonal employee. When Robin bursts into the back room of the shop to tell him that something is wrong with the mistletoe, Noah realizes this year is going to be a bit more interesting. But it’s fine. All he has to do is retrieve all the spelled mistletoe before it causes kiss-filled chaos all over town while keeping his hands—and lips—off Robin. Simple, right? No problem at all.

If a war between elves and reindeer isn’t shocking enough, it hardly holds a candle to finding out that I’m supposed to be the one person who can save an entire planet. A grimoire with the power of Christmas itself woven through the pages. Without it, Christmas isn’t happening, and Santa himself is in grave danger. Could Winterspell hold the key to saving Christmas?

A mate, children, love. These are the things that are important to most shifters, even Tiger shifters, who are more solitary than most. They certainly once meant everything to Travis Vitrano. This might just destroy us all.

Kalia’s life is all mapped out for her – she is heir to the elven homeland and marriage to a Duke’s son had been arranged before she was old enough to walk. For her, the war in the north is far away and all she knows of it is stories about the fearless Dragoneers. Her life is safe. Idyllic. Until she accidentally bonds with the blue dragon, Farean. Kalia is banished from her homeland and her engagement is broken – the nobility will have nothing to do with dragon riders. And the Dragoneers don’t exactly welcome the former princess with open arms. To gain the respect of these warriors, she must enter the Great Dragon Race and demonstrate her skills. But she’s still a novice, it’s as unlikely as flying without a dragon. The war against the Goblins suddenly close to home, Kalia must find her place in a world very different from the one she knew. A world of fighting and fear – and a place where lovers are chosen rather than assigned. As the challenges mount, she discovers that she’s not the person she thought she was. And that may be a good thing.
Pembroke Black had always had a lot on her plate. As a child, she could not tolerate her father, and Pem had moved in with her grandparents when her mother died. When she was old enough to move out, she joined the Army and served the front lines as a doctor. Stitching people up was what she did best. Coping with her own emotions was another story—Pem found little joy in this world. When Pem’s grandda passed away, Theo Manning was there to help Pem’s grandma any way he could. That included keeping grandma safe. He had no idea until he met Pem that she was his mate. Theo wanted to protect her, too, from what was to come. Pem only had to touch his hand to receive the magic coming to her, but neither had any idea how much magic would flow between them. Pem had always had her emotions take her under at times, but this was nothing like that. She was happy. She felt better than she had in years. Pem only hoped that Theo would not rush her. There was just too much going on for her to deal with a pushy man.
A Dying Lion…Rejected by his mate, Daniel has been on a suicide mission in hopes of avenging her even though he’ll never know her love. When a battle with hunters leaves him in a coma, no one can understand why his animal isn’t healing him. A Broken Tiger…A brutal attack left Ariel with wounds soul deep. Nightmares she’d once locked deep have returned with a vengeance, bringing a rise of questions to her mind. Her pride believes she’s cast off her mate when the truth is far worse. Mate…One with a shattered spirit, sure she’ll never be what he needs. One with a shattered body, tired of walking away. Both in need of the mending only a mate’s love can bring. If only they’re willing to reach out and claim it.
Nevaeh – I bargained with Lucifer. My end of this deal with the devil? Sneaking food into the prisoner’s cell. Raphael, powerful Lord of Court of Sunder, is no less magnificent even in defeat, with burning violet eyes that track my every move. I shouldn’t even be around him for my dreams feel disturbingly like memories of forbidden things I’d done in a life I never lived. If he finds out about my terrors, he’ll know Lucifer can Mark me, and use me to his bidding. But it’s hard hiding things from a male I’ve come to… like. Raphael – Michael risked catastrophe on the realm by taking a Marked one as his soul’s mate. I tried to stop him, and for my actions, he stripped my wings. I don’t know why my brother’s pretty soldier is helping me, but when the chance to escape comes, I take it. And I take her with me. My plan: build an army and wreak revenge on Court of Command. But the moment my lips touch Neveah’s, everything shifts. Until the end of days, I want to lose myself in the pleasure of her mortal soul. But if my brother and I are divided, Lucifer wins, and those days will come to a bloody and violent end.

Nestled between Little St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island, Salix Pointe is not a place that many people know of. As a part of the Golden Isles of Georgia, it’s never mentioned because of all the Weeping Willows that grow there. The surrounding town’s folk call it the Island of Death.
Elisa Hunte never let the old suspicions bother her. Yeah, there had been some strange things that had happened in the town like floating objects and people disappearing in the night, but that happened everywhere, didn’t it? Even though every night, she dreamed of the same faceless man who did things to her body that were carnal sins, she knew most of the talk about Salix Pointe was just old folklore. Elisa also knew that she was different. She seemed to sense things before they happened. That was just good ole instinct, right?
Tasmin Pettiford was a city girl through and through. She hated the country, particularly Salix Pointe. If it wasn’t for the fact that her favorite aunt had recently passed away, and willed her bookstore to her, Tasmin would have never returned to the island that disturbed her on so many levels. There were stories of townspeople practicing magic regularly, others seeming to vanish without a trace, and the bookstore seemed to be the epicenter of all things weird and unusual. Tasmin couldn’t offload the property fast enough. The sooner it was sold, the sooner she’d be back in New York, away from the mosquitoes, the bookstore, and the eeriness of a town that caused many a nightmare during her childhood. Or could it really be that simple?
Not to mention, Elisa couldn’t explain why her body reacted the way it did to the town’s brooding vet, Dafari Battle. And when his even sexier brother Octavian Jerrod stepped into town, dragging otherworldly trouble along, Salix Pointe will never be the same. Elisa and Tasmin may not want to put too much stock into the folklore of Salix Pointe, but there is a reason that the universe has brought the two women together.
The life of an Enchantress isn’t all love potions and seduction spells. For Kiki Beelze, it also involves assuring suspicious women that she won’t steal their men, ordering the exact right brand of Eye of Newt for her witchcraft supply shop, and trying to catch a pesky thief. Thankfully, her bestie offers a solution to the latter that just might work. As a devoted member of his vampire clan, Thayne Nicolaides eagerly agrees when the Master’s Beloved asks him to help her friend catch a criminal. When he learns the friend is an Enchantress, it’s too late to change his mind. Thayne had a bad experience with one in his youth, and that’s all he’s going to say about that. The moment they lock eyes in Kiki’s shop, Thayne’s soul aches for her. As far as he’s concerned, it’s proof she’s cast a spell on him, despite her objections. But that doesn’t stop him from shoving his tongue down her throat…or other things into other places. Can the sexy vamp accept his tie to the enchanting Enchantress or will his past dictate his future?
She’s a wood elf who makes trees bear fruit constantly; he’s a partridge shifter who can’t shift completely. He can’t go all the way, and she’s got wood. She watched the years pass through her leaves and branches, and when a young shifter with partridge wings starts to hang out in her vicinity, she finds out that after all the years of watching the shifters come and go, she can still find a man attractive and want to be with him. He visits her for a few weeks until the longest night of the year. He dresses her tree up and wishes her the best of the season, and in the darkness, she emerges from the trunk of the tree that had held her safe. New day, new year, time to start again.

My father made a terrible mistake. One I’m left paying for. As a wolf shifter growing up in a strong pack, I should be living my best life. But after my father tried to kill our leader, I’m labelled an outcast, traitor, less than dirt.
When I can’t take pack life any longer, I run, but apparently they don’t like losing their punching bag. Torin, the leader’s son, drags me back before my first shift… a shift that will reveal my true mate. I never could have predicted who mine would be, but the moment my wolf looks upon him, I’m filled with hope for a brighter future. Afterall, no one ever rejects their true mate, right? Wrong. Very wrong. When the wolves attack, my soul screams for vengeance, and somehow I touch the shadow world. Somehow I bring him to our lands. The Shadow Beast. Our shifter god. The devil himself. Turns out being rejected by my mate was only the beginning.
The cousin of the High King, Lyndi Chandali has lived with the constant threat of being pawned off as a political prize. A rare, female-born dragon like Lyndi can’t truly mate—not in the way it counts. Which is why she’s kept her distance from a certain sinfully delicious Beta. Instead, she’s built a life for herself giving orphaned dragons in the Americas a home.
As Beta of his team of enforcers, Levi Rowtag is a fighter first, last, and always. His job is to protect—his team, the shifters in his territory, and the stubborn woman hell-bent on fighting with him at every turn. He knows from the moment they first meet what she’ll never accept—they are destined to be mated. But with the kings at war, the enemy is now coming for Lyndi. Worse, he’s coming for her orphans, too. He’ll have no choice but to defy his king and go rogue if he has any hope of protecting them all…and finally claiming his mate.
I love Darik – he’s kind of devil may care and a lone wolf when the book begins, and saddled with a mini version of an alien Artificial Intelligence as a sidekick. I put a few nods to one of my favorite scifi books in the plot – ‘Puppet Masters’. Of course in the eleven or so books since this one, Darik and Nicolle have come to be key figures in the Badari world and both appear as supporting characters in JAMOKAN, which I’m writing now. Sorry, that wasn’t a DARIK spoiler, was it? Since I write Happy Ever After romances…you can kinda figure they find a way somehow to escape the Khagrish in this book, right?
The blurb: Nicolle James is far from her home in the human Sectors, kidnapped by alien scientists to be the subject of horrifying experiments. Her only hope might be a mysterious soldier she’d glimpsed outside the laboratory fence. She’d managed to sneak a few words of conversation with him when her captors weren’t watching but now the aliens were taking her inside the lab to begin the experiments.
Darik, a warrior of the genetically engineered Badari pack, is on a solo recon mission to check out a mysterious new lab high in the mountains. His orders are strict – do not engage. But when he has a chance meeting with the woman who might be his mate, he vows not to abandon her, orders or no orders.
Can he get inside an underground lab, find Nicolle and rescue her without getting captured himself? And when he learns the lab’s deadly secrets, can he get word to his pack about the new dangers?
Because the ruthless alien scientist running the experiments wants to get her hands on him too and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals.
Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens. Some overarching issues do remain unresolved in each book since this is an ongoing series but romance always wins the day in my novels!
LINKS TO RECENT NEW RELEASES POSTS from Veronica:
“New” is generally plus or minus a week or two. I try to catch up on ones I missed in recent months. And I may mention ‘special items’.
I do NOT cover every single new release in SFR/FantasyR/PNR. I never have. That would be an impossible task for any human! I assemble my list by hand every week based on various informal inputs, and I do curate the list to some extent…
Some authors aren’t in KU but still don’t list books with Apple or other platforms. This report is very time consuming to prepare so I’ve always had to limit myself and cannot go and look up every book on all the platforms. If an author gives me their other buy links, I include them here but generally I develop the post on my own, not from author-supplied information. I curate and prepare this post individually every week to help connect readers/books/authors and I have to be very careful not to give it so much time as an activity that I don’t write my own novels! Thanks for the feedback and happy reading!
I check and verify all the buy links at the time I create the post but after that I’m not responsible.
