What if your past wasn’t what you thought? As a child, Linda Russell was left to raise herself in a twenty-acre walled-off property in rural Washington. Then one day Linda witnesses something she wasn’t meant to see. Terrified and alone, she climbs the wall and abandons her home, but her escape becomes a different kind of trap when she is thrust into the modern world—a world for which she is not only entirely unprepared, but which is unprepared to accept her. And you couldn’t see a future for yourself? Years later, Linda is living in bustling Seattle, but she has never felt more alone. With social media more ubiquitous than ever before, she is hounded by the society she is now forced to inhabit. When Linda meets a fascinating new neighbor who might just be a potential friend, and who shows her the possibility of a new escape through virtual reality, she begins to allow herself to hope for more by being sucked into a world that feels safe, but isn’t real. What would it take to reclaim your life? Then an unexplained fire at her infamous childhood home jolts Linda back to reality. She must return to the property for the first time since she was a girl, unleashing a chain of events that will not only endanger her life but challenge her understanding of family, memory, and the world itself.
Holly Roads uses Harajuku fashion to distract herself from tragedy. Her magical girl aesthetic makes her feel beautiful—and it keeps the world at arm’s length. She’s an island of one, until advice from an amateur psychic expands her universe. A midnight detour ends with her vs. exploding mutants in the heart of San Francisco. Brush with destiny? Check. Waking up with blue blood, emotions gone haywire, and terrifying strength that starts ripping her wardrobe to shreds? Totally not cute. Electra Rex, the last human in known space, is broke—worse than broke, deeply in debt and out of options. After a desperate, drunken attempt to fix her faltering life, she finds herself in a deeper hole after stealing the most stylish starship she’s ever seen, but it comes with a massive lien. She’s left with a fast ship, a nearly indestructible debt-enforcement robot named Letterman watching her every move and a lead on a lucrative job with the mysterious organization known as Bi-MARP, which is set to rebuild Earth on the two-thousand-year anniversary of its destruction. Across two galaxies, she struggles to stay one step ahead of space pirates and creditors, all while trying to catch the eye of a beautiful, vivacious bisexual clone named Treasure, who was recently rescued from a top-secret university lab run by academic squids. She succeeds in seducing Treasure—or perhaps it’s the other way around—while they run scams to find earthling relics like the original formula for Coca-Cola, a 1968 Volkswagen Beatle, a mostly complete Monopoly board game and a largely accurate, if not small and green, clone of an elephant. All the while, Electra has to hide the fact that Treasure is actually the most valuable item on the Bi-MARP list—a fertile human female. When the truth of humanity’s demise and the goals of Bi-MARP are uncovered, Electra, the galaxy’s foremost transgender hero, decides that the riches and fame aren’t worth the sacrifices, and she turns on her former employer to rescue Treasure a third time, completing her search for money, what it means to be human without the rest of humanity and, most of all, love.

Clark can’t stop wanting quiet, loyal Van no matter how the electricity between them misfires, and Van craves more than hookups from the charismatic newcomer. Yesterday I was the pilot of a badly damaged ship desperately trying to reach a friendly outpost. Today I am a specimen, naked, helpless, and on display for a huge, terrifyingly sexy alien brute. I knew the risks of leading my crew into the Colbear Quadrant, but we were losing power fast and I had no choice. Now the truth is clear. The ships that vanished in this region were not lost. They were taken. Taken by beasts like the one now examining me to ensure I am ready to be claimed and ravaged. But I can feel him losing control of his instincts. He’s not going to save me for captive breeding. He’s going to take me himself, right here and now, and he’s not going to be scientific about it.

Bedridden and blind, she accepts the order from the Volunteer Project and gets herself reset into a body that can move and skin that isn’t black. She did not think of anything aside from getting her body back under her control, so when she ends up at her assignment as a guardian communicator and tactician for three worlds, she does the job with good cheer until she got the first day off. Having locals trying to seduce her was strange, but knowing that she had been reset with the genes to be one of their queens, she just tried to ignore it. An act of kindness puts her in the path of a guardian who coincidentally also has a day off, and her day in the sun warms up considerably from there.
The next day she meets his teammate, and the next teammate the day after that. The new genes come with new morals and less control.

But Gathos created a genetic failsafe in their Gems—a flaw in their DNA that causes their health to rapidly deteriorate as they age unless they are regularly dosed with medication controlled by Gathos City. When violence erupts across the Withers, Nate’s illegal supply of medicine is cut off, and a vicious attack on Reed threatens to expose his secret. With time running out, Nate is left with only two options: work for a shadowy terrorist organization that has the means to keep him alive, or stay—and die—with the boy he loves.

The powerful novel-in-verse from Safia Elhillo, the critically acclaimed poet featured on Forbes Africa’s “30 Under 30” list. This mesmerizing journey of family, identity, and finding yourself in the most unexpected places is filled with lyrical beauty and stunning strength. Nima doesn’t feel understood. By her mother, who grew up far away in a different land. By her suburban town, which makes her feel too much like an outsider to fit in and not enough like an outsider to belong somewhere else. At least she has her childhood friend Haitham, with whom she can let her guard down and be herself. Until she doesn’t. As the ground is pulled out from under her, Nima must grapple with the phantom of a life not chosen, the name her parents didn’t give her at birth: Yasmeen. But that other name, that other girl, might be more real than Nima knows. And more hungry. And the life Nima has, the one she keeps wishing were someone else’s . . . she might have to fight for it with a fierceness she never knew she had.

How far would you go to satisfy your urges, if all Beta men couldn’t hit the right spot? Would you buy an Alpha at a slave auction? Probably not. That’s a crazy idea, right? Especially if you’re a vulnerable Beta woman. Most Beta women would be petrified with the idea of dating or mating an Alpha, but for Dahlia Mountford, that was all she’d ever fantasized about. Her mother and friends thought she was insane, and tried to convince her to settle down with her gorgeous boyfriend, Jaxon. As appealing as he was to most, Dahlia always felt like something was missing. Whether it was his pathetic growl, or failed attempts at dominance, she didn’t know exactly. All she knew for sure, was that matter no how much he tried to please her, he always fell short. Every Beta man did. A drunken, accidental bid at Algar-din’s slave auction, changes the course of Dahlia’s life forever. The question is, will it be all she ever wished for? Or will it be a deadly disaster?

Twenty-five years ago, five heroes risked their lives to defeat the bone maker Eklor—a corrupt magician who created an inhuman army using animal bones. But victory came at a tragic price. Only four of the heroes survived. Since then, Kreya, the group’s leader, has exiled herself to a remote tower and devoted herself to one purpose: resurrecting her dead husband. But such a task requires both a cache of human bones and a sacrifice—for each day he lives, she will live one less. She’d rather live one year with her husband than a hundred without him, but using human bones for magic is illegal in Vos. The dead are burned—as are any bone workers who violate the law. Yet Kreya knows where she can find the bones she needs: the battlefield where her husband and countless others lost their lives. But defying the laws of the land exposes a terrible possibility. Maybe the dead don’t rest in peace after all. Five warriors—one broken, one gone soft, one pursuing a simple life, one stuck in the past, and one who should dead. Their story should have been finished. But evil doesn’t stop just because someone once said, “the end.”

Such a child – a striga – is considered a dangerous demon, which must be abandoned on the edge of the forest to protect the community. But Salka is headstrong and young, and when threatened with losing everything, she is forced to explore the depths of her true nature, testing the bonds between mother and child.
Whelp, I didn’t see that coming. No pun intended—well, maybe a little pun with special sauce. Somehow I’ve landed in a weird space where I’m not quite dead but not quite alive either, standing on the edge of something incredible—if only I take the chance and dive into the unknown. My mates taught me to jump on in without hesitation. I hope the water is warm. Taking a leap of faith isn’t necessarily the issue, it’s kicking my legs hard enough to break the surface for that first breath of fresh air. Oh, and also avoiding those who would rather see me drown. Dying was easy, but it’s living that may prove difficult, especially when a certain god wants to rip the bonds of fate from my soul. Unfortunately for him, I’ve already claimed my place with my mates and I’m ready to fight like hell to keep them. No matter what.

Graduate student Bree Sanders is failing the one class she needs to get her degree. So when her professor gives her an ultimatum—ace her thesis or risk having to repeat her final semester—she knows she has to pull out all the stops. After scrambling for an idea, she decides to create her own Ghost Club, a club that blames ghosts for unsolved crimes, the same type of club originally founded two centuries ago by Charles Dickens. What she doesn’t expect is to find an original copy of one of Dickens’ early works, or to be transplanted into Dickens’s actual ghost club meeting, circa 1870, the instant she picks it up.
When Bree shows up in nineteenth-century England wearing cut-offs and an old t-shirt, her only option is to hide. The Cambridge of 1870 won’t look kindly on a woman dressed like her. So, when Theodore Keyes finds her tucked behind a bookcase at the Trinity College library and immediately demands to know where she came from, she knows he doesn’t belong here either. Turns out she’s right; the same book caused him to time-travel from 1947 almost three months ago and he’s been stuck in England since. Together, the two vow to work side-by-side in their search for the lost book that will take them home. But as their feelings for one another deepen, Theo and Bree are caught between a desire to return to the lives they each left behind, and the knowledge that if they find the book, they won’t be able to leave together. In the end, they each must decide which sacrifice is worth making—the one that will cost them their hearts, or the one that could cost them their very existence.

Saffron – What do you do when a half naked man lands on your doorstep? Well in this instance, try to stop him from biting you I guess. I live alone in the woods for a reason, so when Peter shows up, bloody and naked, he’s already more trouble than I need. Little did I know, this was just the beginning, and that some trouble can actually be a lot of fun. Peter – I’ve always said I’d do anything for the pack. Anything for my family. But marrying a stranger when I know my mate is out there somewhere? Sorry, I’d rather die. And now that I’ve found Saffron, I have something worth dying for.
They’ve been missing their omega for 40 years…but now the hunt is on to find her. I used to be invisible. A divorced and childless 40-year-old, who hid in the shadows. Now I’m the most wanted woman in the shifter world. I’ve been deceived, kidnapped, and imprinted on more times than I can count. I attract sexy werewolves wherever I go. They think they can claim me. They think they can make me their mate. But what none of them realize, is that I’m infertile. And when danger comes, will my harem protect me if they know the truth?
In the frigid woods at the edge of a storm, I’m going to find myself or die trying. I’m a fugitive of the fae city of Windhelm, framed for a murder I didn’t commit. I only made it out of their dungeons by luck, and now I’m on the run—but so is the Prince. Nobody knows where he is, but my instincts pull me toward the Veridian; a roaring tempest of dark magic that roams the land of the winter fae. Our trip through the forest is cut short, though, by a group of fae that seize our carriage and bring us to their village as their prisoners. The mark on my hand, the mark of the white wolf, is the only thing that keeps them from killing us outright, but if I can’t prove my mark is real, I’m only prolonging the inevitable. I don’t have time for these people. I need to find Cillian before he does something stupid, but I don’t have a lot of options.
I didn’t fear my nightmares. I loved them… and they loved me. I had never been afraid of the dark. Abandoned on the front step of ISS, I’d spent my entire life thriving in the realm of darkness that most humans avoided. I was a woman living among monsters. Arabella was abandoned at the front steps of INSTITUTUM SEQUUNTUR SOMNIA (ISS) one stormy night, only to be found and brought in by the monsters that lived there. An institute of nightmares that housed the most dangerous creatures that walked the plane of humanity. A place that trained and harnessed those abilities for their own use, while defending against the humans that were constantly attacking them.
But what happens when a young human woman grows up among the nightmares? Feeling no fear but instead taking comfort in her team that she surrounded herself by? By all regards, Arabella shouldn’t have fit in at the institute. Nothing like the warrior-like creatures around her, the 5’1’’ young woman with pink hair and a vision impairment was absolutely fundamental to her team. Not just for her strategic brilliance but her soothing lack of fear that seemed to tame the nightmares around her. Arabella is bound and determined to keep her monstrous men safe while they are on their missions. What happens when their most recent mission attracts the wrong type of attention? What happens when ISS comes under attack and everything that she values is destroyed?

Theodore Knight has a curious nature. Ever since he was a child, he’s loved books that are full of danger and adventure. In real life, he’s a simple bookstore owner. But in his imagination, he’s a hero who goes on great quests to save the princess, or in his case, the prince, from evil dragons. Until one day, real life starts to look a lot like his imaginary world. . . and the fate of an entire kingdom rests on his shoulders. The world is more magical than he ever thought, and he will have to learn to accept the impossible as possible, if he and Samuel are to succeed. Samuel Day had never journeyed to the human realm, and he sure didn’t mean to get stuck there. That said, he’s found it all incredibly fascinating. Especially Theodore, the adorable human who holds a piece of the puzzle necessary to stop an evil immortal and save the magic realm known as Evorea. His loyalty is to his king, but it doesn’t take long for Theodore to become equally important. They come from different realms and are as different as night and day, but together they have everything they need to save Evorea from ruin. They just have to find their way back there.

Emma – A sliver of light in the back of my mind. A hint of day, of warmth, of something familiar. A king with a bright crown of pure sunlight. But these are all just dreams, ones that needlessly haunt me. I know they are lies. Eraldon is my true king. He is my life, my dark heart. My wings and my fangs—they are his. Whatever memories I have of light, those are falsehoods , ones forced on me by my enemy. By my greatest hate—King Solano. A monster wrapped in sunshine, a liar who killed my friends and my mother. Together, Eraldon and I will end his evil and take his realm.
Solano – A soft touch of a warm hand. A hint of laughter, of wit, of a clever tongue. A changeling who was made for me. Who is my mate. But I didn’t protect her. She is gone, stolen by the wretch who seeks to take all of Arin, to rule over it and turn it into a wasteland of bloodthirsty seekers. Eraldon took my mate and poisoned her. This time, as the rightful queen of day.
VS: Continuing on through my ancient Egyptian paranormal romance backlist, I wrote a direct sequel for Nima, my dancer, entitled RETURN OF THE DANCER OF THE NILE. Nima and Kamin are one of my favorite couples and I’d had a scene in my head forever, where Nima is screaming at Pharaoh that Kamin is not, cannot be dead. The plot goes from there. I always challenge myself to tell a fresh story each time, so Renenutet the Snake Goddess appears, but briefly, and I had the best time bringing another member of the pantheon into the mix. I also added in a member of the Medjai, Pharaoh’s police and the goddess Ma’at’s enforcers of justice.
RETURN OF DANCER OF THE NILE
Nima, formerly a tavern dancer in the land of the Nile, has settled into the leisurely life of her dreams as the pampered, beloved wife to a high ranking general who’s also a member of Pharaoh’s court. She’s sworn never to dance for anyone else but Kamin, the man she loves. All is fine until one day news arrives that her husband has been killed in a chariot accident while on a trip to a remote city on Pharaoh’s behalf.
But as a reward for their previous service to Egypt against a dangerous enemy, the gods had promised Nima and Kamin they’d die at the same moment…so if she still lives, so must he.
Why is the ruler of the city lying to Pharaoh about Kamin’s death? What is the woman covering up? And where is Kamin?
Time for Nima the elegant lady to vanish from Thebes and Nima the skilled dancer to make her way in disguise to the far distant province and fight for Kamin’s life. She’ll have to deal with angry gods, black magic, an enemy prince and a deadly ghost along the way.
Nima is the only one who can rescue her beloved from the dark fate planned for him by Egypt’s enemies…
LINKS TO RECENT NEW RELEASES POSTS from Veronica:
“New” is generally plus or minus a week or two. I try to catch up on ones I missed in recent months. And I may mention ‘special items’.
I do NOT cover every single new release in SFR/FantasyR/PNR. I never have. That would be an impossible task for any human! I assemble my list by hand every week based on various informal inputs, and I do curate the list to some extent…
Some authors aren’t in KU but still don’t list books with Apple or other platforms. This report is very time consuming to prepare so I’ve always had to limit myself and cannot go and look up every book on all the platforms. If an author gives me their other buy links, I include them here but generally I develop the post on my own, not from author-supplied information. I curate and prepare this post individually every week to help connect readers/books/authors and I have to be very careful not to give it so much time as an activity that I don’t write my own novels! Thanks for the feedback and happy reading!
I check and verify all the buy links at the time I create the post but after that I’m not responsible.
