VS Note: SciFi with romantic elements maybe. I liked this author’s previous novel Contagion very much…on my To Be Read list.
Delta of Dead River has always been told to hide her back, where a map is branded on her skin to a rumored paradise called the Verdant. In a wasteland plagued by dust squalls, geomagnetic storms, and solar flares, many would kill for it—even if no one can read it. So when raiders sent by a man known as the General attack her village, Delta suspects he is searching for her. Delta sets out to rescue her family but quickly learns that in the Wastes no one can be trusted—perhaps not even her childhood friend, Asher, who has been missing for nearly a decade. If Delta can trust Asher, she just might decode the map and trade evidence of the Verdant to the General for her family. What Delta doesn’t count on is what waits at the Verdant: a long-forgotten secret that will shake the foundation of her entire world.

When a human sees his true form, he has no choice but to take her back to his ship. But at the touch of her soft skin, his blood ignites like it has with no other female. When the Herkleian government orders Meredith transferred to a lab for study, Kyrix will do anything to save her. Is it possible a human could be the fated mate to an alien royal? Along with the heat in his gaze. Daxis can say he doesn’t want to touch me, But that lie is just as transparent as the wind he controls. With no water, no air, and no native life, the planet Gora is unremarkable. The only thing it has going for it is a chance proximity to more popular worlds, making it a decent stopover for ships traveling between the wormholes that keep the Galactic Commons connected. If deep space is a highway, Gora is just your average truck stop. At the Five-Hop One-Stop, long-haul spacers can stretch their legs (if they have legs, that is), and get fuel, transit permits, and assorted supplies. The Five-Hop is run by an enterprising alien and her sometimes helpful child, who work hard to provide a little piece of home to everyone passing through. When a freak technological failure halts all traffic to and from Gora, three strangers—all different species with different aims—are thrown together at the Five-Hop. Grounded, with nothing to do but wait, the trio—an exiled artist with an appointment to keep, a cargo runner at a personal crossroads, and a mysterious individual doing her best to help those on the fringes—are compelled to confront where they’ve been, where they might go, and what they are, or could be, to each other.

Neither life or love is easy in a broken and dying world. The Earth is divided, stripped, and abused. The human experiment was an utter failure. From across the stars came a superior race to heal a broken and desolate world. Man, however, in his fear and bigotry, turned from them and instead incited war. There is a safe zone. Where the patriarchy is resisted, and others strive for Utopia. Where humans and aliens coexist not only in harmony but in symbiotic love. Echo’s only dream is to take her son and escape. To leave behind the pain and humiliation of her life. Little does she know of the trials that await- the legacy of her birth or what it means to have not just Dhun’ai but also Sin’aeth, mates.
VS Note: I went and read book one of the series. This is scifi with mild romantic elements. I’ll be reading book two next and then this one. It’s kind of like a soap opera with the small town life where the action is set but I got drawn into it sort of despite myself and found book one an enjoyable read (all plastic dissolves in that one).
In Breath by Breath, book three in the trilogy, the residents of Sycamore River have weathered the Change and the nuclear war it provoked. They emerge to try to build a life from the shattered remains of their town. But for some, the very air has become toxic. The people of Sycamore River have to survived the unthinkable. Can they build something new from the ashes? Llywelyn blends her signature character-driven portrait of small-town life with the appeal of William Fortschen’s One Second After.
VS Note: Not a romance; scifi release of note.

Halfway across the galaxy, I’m happy to have finally escaped and found more humans…well, I was. But now, I’m not so sure that people are so much better than pirates. Ever since a vicious enemy destroyed our planet, I have labored in the bowels of this solport.
My family, my betrothed, everyone I knew was savagely murdered. All that remained were a few of my fellow warriors, a handful of ships, and the trade goods in our cavernous hold. As quartermaster these have been mine to protect. Primarily from the admiral’s human mate, Trina, who was determined to deck out every inch of our craft with the last of the precious goods produced on Arythios. After the slaughter, our captain declared that no color would be displayed. We were in mourning. Once his Terran female arrived, that changed. I tried to hold my tongue, but she’s stripping away all that we have left, trying to decorate an entire planet. Instead of validating my concerns, the admiral fired me as quartermaster. My new job is to find the resources on Centauri to recreate as many Arythian products as possible. We’ll need furniture, fabrics, household goods… everything. Unable to call an end to my grief, I set about my task still clad in the grays of mourning…(more blurb on ebook seller page…)

Most of the town that is, except for some mundane folks who think the magical backstory is all folklore. Joke’s on them. But to keep ourselves under the radar, we mainly mind our p’s and q’s. Most of the time. Nana and I run the local bakery….she’s the brains behind the baked goods and I’m the brawn. Someone has to haul those hefty cookie sheets on the racks. But now I have a murder to solve. I may not be a licensed detective, but a little badge never stopped me. Much to the chagrin of the local warlock/sheriff, Cody. It’s okay, he’ll get use to my perseverance…maybe. Although there is one being who might like me to stick to baking him treats only is my familiar, Sir Jasper Jones. Poor fellow was a knight in a former life until he tangled with a dark witch. Now he has to settle for licking his privates and the occasional tuna treat. I think he likes both rather too much.
Ten years ago, I looked my mate in the eye, and I lied to him. I told him he wasn’t my mate and that I never wanted to see him again. I did it to save his life from my father, the alpha of the pack. Now Saint is back, and he’s the king of all alphas, with an entire pack created of other alphas he saved from what my father did to them. The thing is, Saint is back for revenge against those who wronged him, and I’m at the top of his list. I did it to save his life, but the cost will be my own. Ten years ago, she broke my heart and ripped out my soul. Her father sent me away to a place worse than hell.
I escaped the fate he chose for us and built a pack that couldn’t be broken. I’m the King of Alphas, and I’m heading straight for her. Braelyn broke me, but I intend to break her apart until there’s nothing left but her worthless soul, and when I reach it? I intend to rip it apart too.
My name is Lottie Lemon, and I see dead people. Okay, so I rarely see dead people, mostly I see furry creatures of the dearly departed variety, who have come back from the other side to warn me of their previous owner’s impending doom. A dispute at the local church leaves someone in need of their last rites, and Lottie is caught in the middle. The mystery woman stalking Honey Hollow has been revealed, and Lottie suspects something wicked lies beneath the surface of that familiar face of hers.
Lottie Lemon has a brand new bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors, and she has the supernatural ability to see the dead—which are always harbingers for ominous things to come. Throw in a string of murders, and her insatiable thirst for justice, and you’ll have more chaos than you know what to do with.
I’m struggling with my evil side—the demon known as Lilith—and only Samael can help me. Unfortunately, he thinks we’re dangerous for each other—just because we murdered each other in past lives. And even worse, he believes he has to marry a mortal to keep me safe. A genuinely terrible mortal woman, I might add. But with the Free Men growing in power, we must join forces to stop their evil army. As we journey through Albia searching for them, we are drawn even closer together, bound by desire and our twisted love. As far as I can tell, one of two things will happen: either we will overcome our past, and defeat the Free Men together. Or our dark history will have us turning into monsters and tearing each other to pieces. I’m hoping for the first one.

Twenty-five years ago, my life was decided for me and I’ve been lied to ever since. I never questioned being an orphan. Father Kaden just told me I couldn’t live in the monastery anymore when he moved me in with Lady Cerise and her son. I was just grateful for the roof over my head and the friendly company. This was my life until a black swan started speaking to me in my head. She tells me I’m not an orphan at all. My family is quite alive and I have a twin sister. I don’t even have time to process any of this because she also tells me I have a destiny. Something that has been promised to my twin sister since birth. Lodestone-peddler Melaine is desperate to stop hustling her raw magic for a tuppence. Her rare gift of infusing her magic into a lodestone to sell for another’s use and never keeping any for herself is nothing but a degrading path to an early grave. Yearning for a better life, Melaine turns to her unconventional childhood idol, the powerful but sinister Overlord, sorcerer-ruler of the Centara. When she achieves an audience and arrives at his reclusive retreat of ancient Highstrong Keep, she finds that the compelling, handsome man who conquered a kingdom by the age of twenty is now a weak, shadowed husk, and he needs her lodestones to give him strength. In exchange, he will take her on as his apprentice. Trapped in Highstrong with a half-crazed prisoner, a strict servant, and the Overlord, Melaine learns that they may all be prey to far more malevolent forces than the Overlord’s black-magic experiments. Faced with menacing apparitions, ancient curses, and an even greater horror that could threaten the entire kingdom if unleashed, Melaine’s penchant for survival is contested by her growing feelings for the Overlord and her path toward finding a deeper meaning to life than the pure power she once craved.

A queen needs an army, and when we travel to Eden Park, the shifter theme park, I am in for a surprise. It starts to feel all too real when people want you to kiss their babies for good luck, you know? Luckily, I have the two sexiest, dearest men in the world at my side, my loyal wolf shifter musician Ian and sharp tongued but sweet lynx-shifter Waylon, who keeps revealing new talents… But where is my third consort? At least, that’s what the distractingly good-looking Inspector Short advises. But Liz isn’t so sure. No one deserves to be executed and revivified as one of the undead policemen that terrorise Europe—and if that wasn’t enough, the bomber, Anton Lupei, claims he and Liz were once lovers. If only she can gain his trust, Anton could be Miss Sharp’s only link with a past and family she has forgotten. As the Orient Express steams from Paris to Hungary, Liz’s search for her past threatens to uncover a continent-spanning conspiracy. Why are the anarchists targeting Princess May? Who was Miss Sharp before she lost her memories? And how do you avoid being drained by a very hungry vampire? It’s just as well Liz thought to bring a set of lock-pick hairpins.

I’m a woman of action, and waiting isn’t my strong suit. But knowing Jasper and Conah are on the case helps. It’s the smart choice, right? But when my connection to Jasper suddenly dies, waiting around is no longer an option. The Sons of Adam have maintained the upper hand for too long. It’s time to take the fight to them. I just hope I’m not too late.
VS Note: Combining two genres she does so well.
When demons threaten London, even ladies must answer the call…Lord Gabriel Thurston returns home from war to find his fiancée much changed. She’s grown from a sweet girl into a mysterious woman who guards her dark secrets well. When he sees her sneaking away from a ball, he’s convinced it’s for a lovers’ rendezvous. Following her to London’s slums, Gabriel watches in horror as his fiancée ruthlessly slays a man. Lady Belinda Clayton’s only concern was her dress for the next ball—until demons nearly killed her, and a group of Demon Hunters saved her life. Now, a lady by day, and a demon hunter by night, she knows where her duty lies. Ending her betrothal is the best way to protect Gabriel from death at a demon’s hands. Gabriel soon realizes, like him, Belinda has been fighting for her country. He joins in the fight, determined to show her that their love can endure—even at the gates of Hell.
When Demons threaten Regency London, only a Lady can stop them…Lillian Dellacourt is beautiful, refined and absolutely lethal. She’s also the most feared and merciless demon hunter in The Company. She’s come a long way from the penniless seamstress’s daughter sold to the highest bidder, and it wasn’t by trusting a man, let alone an exiled Marquis with more on his mind than slaying the hellspawn…For Dorian Lambert, Marquis de Montlambert, being sent to keep track of Lillian is no mean task. He’s wanted the fiery vixen since he first heard of her five years ago. But wooing the lady while fighting the demon uprising is difficult, especially when the lady’s tongue is as sharp as the Japanese sai blades she favors the hunt. These two will have to learn to trust each other fast, because the demon master is back, and he’s planning to turn Edinburgh into a living hell.

We finished my ancient Egyptian paranormal romance backlist so I’m moving on to my alien empaths series, which actually started with STAR CRUISE: STOWAWAY,a novella where I challenged myself to set up a stowaway situation on board the Nebula Zephyr, which mean figuring out why the woman was locked in a cargo container, who would come to her rescue…and it was my first Pets in Space anthology novella, so there had to be pets as well!
STAR CRUISE: A NOVELLA WITH STAR CRUISE RESCUE AND GOLDEN TOKEN SHORT STORIES
In this volume I’ve gathered three stories set in the Sectors which have previously only been available in anthologies (which are no longer on sale), plus a bonus Sectors short holiday story that I originally wrote for my blog.
Star Cruise: Stowaway: A novella of 22K words, previously in the ‘Pets In Space’ anthology.
Cargo Master Owen Embersson is shocked when the Nebula Zephyr’s ship’s cat and her alien sidekick, Midorri, alert him to the presence of a stowaway. He has no idea of the dangerous complications to come nor does he anticipate falling hard for the woman whose life he now holds in his hands. Life aboard the Nebula Zephyr has just become more interesting – and deadly.
Star Cruise: Rescue: A short story of 9K words, previously in the ‘Romancing the Stars’ anthology.
When a shore leave excursion goes terribly wrong for Mira Gage, a member of the Nebula Zephyr’s crew, Security Officer Clint Miltan races the clock to find her before the ship leaves orbit and abandons Mira to her fate. Clint’s got more than a professional interest in Mira, but will he be able to save her from the aliens holding her prisoner?
The Golden Token: A short story of 13K words, previously in the limited edition ‘Dealer’s Choice’ paperback anthology handed out at the 2016 RT Booklovers Convention Interstellar Bar & Grille event. Edited by Linnea Sinclair. Sectors Special Forces operator Charlie McBrire had a few days to kill on a layover at Space Station 47. He never expected to find himself in the middle of a miners’ rebellion, fighting to save the life of a casino dancer he just met but can’t imagine living without.
BONUS: Star Cruise: Thanksgiving: A short short story of 3K words, originally published on my blog
The crew of the Nebula Zephyr arranges a holiday feast for one of their members.
LINKS TO RECENT NEW RELEASES POSTS from Veronica:
“New” is generally plus or minus a week or two. I try to catch up on ones I missed in recent months. And I may mention ‘special items’.
I do NOT cover every single new release in SFR/FantasyR/PNR. I never have. That would be an impossible task for any human! I assemble my list by hand every week based on various informal inputs, and I do curate the list to some extent…
Some authors aren’t in KU but still don’t list books with Apple or other platforms. This report is very time consuming to prepare so I’ve always had to limit myself and cannot go and look up every book on all the platforms. If an author gives me their other buy links, I include them here but generally I develop the post on my own, not from author-supplied information. I curate and prepare this post individually every week to help connect readers/books/authors and I have to be very careful not to give it so much time as an activity that I don’t write my own novels! Thanks for the feedback and happy reading!
I check and verify all the buy links at the time I create the post but after that I’m not responsible.
