FRANKLIN IN PARADISE by John Patrick
VS Note: Another post apocalyptic book! I also have a family member on the spectrum so I one clicked this and found it to be a very enjoyable read. It’s not as dire and full of adventure as a typical post-apoc but I enjoyed the inner journey of the two main characters. I’m up for a sequel if there is one someday.
Life is good for eighteen-year-old Franklin. He lives on the spectrum, structuring and organizing his days, avoiding messy situations and ambiguity. But what he really wants is a boyfriend. Twenty-one-year-old Patrick has a past he can’t seem to shake, and a sexual identity that’s hard to describe—or maybe it’s just evolving. When a manmade virus sweeps the globe, killing nearly everyone, the two young men find themselves thrust together, dependent on each other for survival. As they begin to rebuild their world, their feelings for each other deepen. But Franklin needs definition and clarity, and Patrick’s identity as asexual—or demisexual, or grey ace?—isn’t helping. These two men will need to look beyond their labels if they are going to find love at the end of the world.

A group of belligerent protestors, they claimed that portals were a human variant and therefore not subject to the rights and privileges of humanity. They should be locked up and studied like the freaks they were. Her greatest priority, however, had to be learning how to control her power. All she needed was the right key – and the right team to support her.She was so screwed.

VS: My featured backlist book this week is TRAPPED ON TALONQUE. I was intrigued by the idea of having one of my Sectors Special Forces heroes actually meet a woman who might have been an Ancient Observer and what I came up with was an alien ‘sleeping beauty’, left behind by her own people, now worshipped by the planet’s tribes…but the tech which keeps her alive is failing…and the galaxy civilization she knew is long gone…it was fun to think through how she’d react when she was awakened and fun to write. I also invented a life or death ball game the imprisoned soldiers have to play to survive…
