Try Not to Fall In Weekend Writing Warriors

I’ve skipped ahead a bit and now we’re meeting Mateer himself. I tried to find a more upbeat excerpt for a change of pace since the previous ones have been on the grim side, with Megan waking up as a prisoner in the aliens’ lab. Mateer will soon be going on a mission to the lab where Megan is being held and they’ll meet for the first time, but for now he’s enjoying a bit of peace. His strictly platonic companion today happens to be Megan’s twin, who was rescued in the first book.

The excerpt:

“And that’s how you clean a fish,” Mateer finished his training session, showing off the filets he’d made from the good-sized fish he’d caught earlier.

The cadets crowded him, clamoring to try their own crude poles and nets.

“All right, try not to fall in, although I’m sure all of you swim better than I do.” With a wave of her hand, his companion for this outdoor lesson today, Lily Garrison, the lead teacher, dismissed the excited youngsters.

As Mateer watched the enthusiastic cadets move to their own fishing holes and likely spots along the lake’s edge, he reflected how astonishingly different life had become for his people, now living in this secluded and peaceful sanctuary valley. Only a few weeks removed from captivity, the youngsters were blooming, freed of the threat of being experimented on by the heartless Khagrish scientists. The transition was more of a challenge for the older soldiers, like himself, who’d grown to maturity under the harsh rule of their alien creators.

Megan Garrison, a doctor at the Sectors Amarcae 7 colony, goes to sleep one night as usual only to wake up in her nightgown, strapped to a table in an alien lab, destined to be the subject of terrifying experiments. Granted a brief reprieve, Megan and the other kidnapped humans are released in the middle of a forestlike enclosure on this unknown world and told to survive as best they can for now.

Her only hope is Mateer, the genetically engineered alien warrior imprisoned with the humans. He knows more than he’s sharing about this planet, their captors and the fate of other humans, including perhaps her own sisters. Turns out everyone from her colony has been kidnapped by the Khagrish, a ruthless race of alien scientists. Working for enemies of the human-led Sectors, the Khagrish have created the Badari to be super soldiers.

Mateer, a tough Badari enforcer, now a rebel, is captured while infiltrating the lab to help his pack bring it down. He’s also been ordered by his leaders to search for Megan and save her life at all costs. Tortured by the enemy, he’s offered one chance at survival – convince Megan to become his mate and assist the Khagrish with further experiments.

As the situation at the lab grows worse, Megan struggles against her deep attraction to Mateer, while she does her best to shield the other humans from the terrible Khagrish experiments. For his part, Mateer knows she really is his fated mate and despairs of being able to keep her safe, as the rebel attack is delayed and she fights the truth of their bond.

Will they be able to work together to defeat Khagrish plans and preserve human lives until the promised rescue happens? And what of their future together – will Megan accept Mateer as her true mate, or walk away if she’s freed?

Why I Wrote MATEER My New #SciFi Romance Novel

VS Note: Today I’m visiting author Pauline B. Jones’ blog to talk about why I wrote Mateer, the second book in my Badari Warriors series. I’m also sharing an exclusive excerpt. Here’s the beginning of the post – you can hop over to Pauline’s blog to read the rest, including the excerpt!

“As with the first book, Aydarr, I’m enjoying working with the concept of genetically engineered soldiers, the Badari, created by an alien race to help them in a war against the humans in the Sectors. I love Lora Leigh’s Breeds series and Laurann Dohner’s New Species books and it’s creatively exciting to have my own take on the trope embodied in this new series.

The enemy has kidnapped the population of a human colony and brought the people to a planet set aside for special research projects (the nastier the better according to the alien scientists). So, of course, the Badari warriors and the humans team up against their mutual enemy. Romance inevitably happens between these brave, fearless soldiers and equally strong and determined human women from the colony.

I’m trying not to do too many spoilers for book one here!

With Mateer, I wanted to keep the series arc moving forward, advancing the overall plot, but I wasn’t done with the idea of a Badari warrior trapped in a lab and the human woman who helps him. There’s such a huge story potential inherent in the situation, which seems hopeless at first glance, but the hero and heroine will find a way out (this is romance – happy endings!). I pondered how Megan, a doctor, would react to being awakened and finding herself a prisoner under threat of really despicable alien experiments – she’d naturally want to use her medical skills to help her fellow humans survive, but not get drawn into offering the enemy even the slightest assistance. And then there’s Mateer, the chief enforcer from the Badari pack, who’s been recaptured, much to the glee of the scientist running the lab. He has plans for Mateer and Megan together….”

A Terrifying Nightmare Weekend Writing Warriors

The excerpt:

What in the seven hells did I eat for dinner? Drowsy as if waking from a deep dream, stomach churning, Megan Garrison attempted to sit up and found herself lying on a metal table, restrained at the ankles and wrists. She was in her nightgown and robe, and she vaguely remembered curling up with a good book and falling asleep. Next came jumbled memories of floating in the air, paralyzed – a terrifying nightmare she’d assured herself. And now this. “Please, someone help me,” she said, turning her head from one side to the other, “I’m going to throw up.”

She stifled a scream as an alien with pink hair, wearing a drab green coat that made him look like a lab tech to her, stepped to the table. He was shadowed by a guard in full black battle garb, face concealed by the visor of his helmet, weapon drawn and aimed at her.

“Eat this,” the tech said in passable Basic, thrusting an open packet toward her lips while activating the table to tilt up at the head. Clenching her jaw, she twisted to avoid the forced nutrition until a second guard intervened to make her hold still while the tech broke off a chunk of the energy bar and forced it between her teeth.

Am I Free To Go? Weekend Writing Warriors

I’ve skipped ahead a bit from the last excerpt. Jill nearly died from the poisonous bite she received while in the pit. Aydarr and his men took her to their shelter, had their healer treat her bite wound and then he personally nursed her through the after effects of the bite. Now she’s feeling better and wildly curious to know more about the planet she’s suddenly been dumped on. And about Aydarr. Jill is speaking.

“Am I free to go then?”

Aydarr eyed her, “Why would you wish to venture into the Preserve unarmed and unaware of the dangers here? After what you just went through?”

“Merely testing the limits of your hospitality.”

“I would have to risk my men to save you again. You’re in my territory, I’ve declared you mine, you will stay safe with the pack.”

Eyeing his muscular frame and undeniably handsome face, she thought maybe in another time and place she might not have minded meeting his possessive claim. The two of them could have battled this out until they got a few things straight between them and most likely ended up in the bedroom because he was flat-out hot. But the situation here wasn’t like anything she’d ever encountered. It felt like she was in an adventure trideo, and she had to walk carefully, “I belong to myself, for your information.”

The excerpt:

As the unseen predator made a stinging bite on her calf, Jill nearly toppled over. Unable to see below the surface of the roiling water, she hurled her handful of rocks a foot or so away from her body, hoping to drive away this new menace.

Before she could find more rocks to use as weapons, another man lowered himself into the pit on a rope, reaching for her and speaking urgently in Basic as he gestured, “He can’t fight them off forever – we need to get out of here. More beasts will arrive soon, attracted by the vibrations signaling prey.”

Figuring whatever might happen later, getting out of the trap was the best plan in the short term, she stepped closer. The newcomer grabbed her by the waist, and unseen comrades above hauled the two of them out of the hole at a surprising speed. Her second rescuer handed her off to another man and hastened back into the pit.

She sank to the wet grass, shaking in reaction and feeling the pain now from her cut foot, the mysterious bite, and the effects of the fall. With a fresh rush of fear, she glanced at the strange men surrounding her.

Jill moved along the pit wall as the man and the beast fought. Mud dripped from the sloping side of the hole. Resting her palm on the damp dirt, she felt vibrations. There’s another one tunneling towards us. No matter how brave and strong this guy was, he couldn’t defeat two of the animals. Frantically, she searched for more rocks, trying to pry a likely candidate out of the wall with her fingernails.

“Incoming – there’s another one about to pop out of the wall,” she yelled. Hefting the rock she’d dug from the muck, she took a few steps forward, waited for the right moment and threw the stone at the first beast’s remaining eye, striking a glancing blow on the brow ridge above the glowing orb. The warrior took advantage of the animal’s distraction to open more gaping wounds along its upper body with the lethal claws he bore.

Something in the rapidly rising water brushed against her leg. She jumped sideways, but not fast enough.

Were Those Talons? Weekend Writing Warriors

The excerpt:

The creature watched her and moved forward a bit from the tunnel, the front segment of its body sinking onto the ground, while the rest remained in the tunnel. The segmented body expanded like a child’s toy as the predator closed the space between them. Opening an outsize mouth, revealing a yellow, forked tongue, the animal hissed and reared as if preparing to charge at her.

Jill shouted defiance in a combination of rage and fear, and threw the rock hard, striking one glowing eye in the center, shattering the facets. She dodged as the predator made a high pitched sound like an exploding generator and lunged toward where she’d been. As she scrambled in the slick muddy water at the bottom of the trap, she searched for another rock, finding only small ones. She gathered a handful of them as better than nothing and spun around as the half-blind animal tried to locate her.

With a hoarse yell, a man jumped into the pit from above and landed between her and the predator. He didn’t seem to have a weapon but, as the lightning flashed, briefly illuminating the scene in stark white light, Jill gaped. Were those talons? He glanced over his shoulder at her briefly as if to see how she was doing then made a dash at the animal, slashing its neck before dancing away.

The excerpt:

She teetered on the edge of the sinkhole or pit, but her precarious state of vertigo betrayed her. Screaming, she half slid, half fell into the deep hole, debris raining down with her.

Scrabbling at roots embedded in the wall as she fell, the flimsy vegetation snapping off in her hands, Jill managed to partially break her fall. Landing in a substantial mud puddle, she rose to her feet, staring upward, realizing there was no easy way to climb from the pit. At least the rain was tapering off.

A rumbling sound like an engine behind her made her pivot, to find two huge, faceted glowing eyes staring at her from a tunnel opening into the hole – a giant body lurked in the gloom. Jill retreated one step at a time to the opposite wall of the pit and snatched a loose rock from the small debris pile at her feet. Whitened bones were mixed in with the rocks on the pit floor next to the rainwater puddle. She shuddered and gripped her rock hard enough to make her hand sting.

Am I Dreaming Weekend Writing Warriors

The excerpt:

She remembered eating dinner in her small modular house on the edge of the colony, falling asleep watching an adventure trideo she’d seen a hundred times then…nothing.

“And now I’m here,” She took a closer look at her left arm and did a double take. A black bracelet she’d never seen before was solid against her skin just above the wrist, with no visible hinge or fastening. As she gawked at it, prying at the edges in an increasingly desperate attempt to make the band move, flickers of red and yellow pulsed inside the cool, hard surface. The bracelet and what it might mean scared her more than the loss of short term memory or even the unknown sun above her.

The roar came again, closer, and was answered by another. Something hunting me maybe? Distracted from the ominous mystery of the bracelet, she was briefly tempted to try climbing the tree, but the lightheadedness persisted. She pushed off, realizing she was barefoot, wearing her short, pink-and-black nightgown, molded to her body by the rain. Lingerie was her secret luxury after a day spent in technician’s coveralls, but certainly not suited to this experience.
