I’m now taking excerpts from my recently published book in the award winning Badari Warriors series, REEDE’S MISSION TO THE SECTORS. It can be read as a standalone (mild spoilers for first book, REEDE.)

The excerpt: I’ve gone a short way into the book, when Reede’s ship has been intercepted by a Sectors Border Patrol vessel. Fallyn Damara is Reede’s human mate and a Sectors Survey Scout. The not so warm welcome-to-the-Sectors continues. Reede and Walt are in a guarded conference room and Fallyn is on her way to meet the captain of the ship they’re on.

The Ariadne was a full size battleship, which surprised Fallyn. She didn’t remember ever hearing a whisper of Border Patrol maintaining its own fleet. She marched behind the other lieutenant through crowded corridors and as she went she assessed the crew and the conditions and was impressed. The captain she was going to see ran a tight ship. Fallyn approved. She hoped he’d be reasonable about Reede and his mission. This was only the first step in a long process of obtaining help for the Badari in fighting their mutual enemies. As she ascended the final gravlift to the captain’s wardroom on the bridge level, Fallyn checked the mate bond as best she could and was relieved to find Reede as centered and calm as always.

So he’s not being mistreated or in any danger. On Ushandirr when she’d been arguing with him to become claimed mates, she’d minimized his doubts about the fact she was on active duty. Now she was in the midst of her own kind, Sectors military, and about to report to a superior officer, tendrils of unease began creeping in. If only they’d made it to a regular ship of the line or even better to a base with a unit of her own service.

But she had to work with what she had.

VS Note: It’s not going to go too well for Fallyn…

REEDE’S MISSION TO THE SECTORS: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL (SECTORS NEW ALLIES SERIES BOOK 15) by Veronica Scott

Reede’s people sent him to the Sectors on a desperate mission to beg for help against overwhelming odds in their battle to destroy the alien scientists who created them centuries ago. He knew the task wasn’t going to be easy but as a Badari Warrior, he vowed to do his best. When he’s arrested by the border patrol and thrown in the brig, things go from bad to worse. He faces difficult choices ahead and unimaginable obstacles to making his case to the authorities for help.

Fallyn is Reede’s human fated mate but also the active duty military scout who guided him to the Sectors from his own planet. Reede’s choices after his arrest put her in a difficult spot and his actions threaten their mate bond. Will she give up her career to help him and the Badari succeed in making a treaty with the Sectors?

The desperate attempt to find new allies takes Reede and Fallyn on a wild set of adventures across the sprawling interstellar Sectors civilization and places them, their friends and their love in harm’s way.

May be edited a bit from published version.

I’ve switched to my new release STAR CRUISE: TIME LOOP,  which is in the Pets in Space 6 anthology.

Excerpt: From the beginning of the novella. I’ve skipped ahead a bit from last week and Raelyn and her pet are back on the ship, with the odd glass bauble. She was warning Eyn not to push the orb off the table…

She hadn’t even finished her sentence when the moyed ducked, trying to avoid her and as he moved with his usual sudden speed, the ornament rolled in the opposite direction, plummeting to the deck. The cabin was carpeted but as if in slow motion Raelyn saw the bubble land on a stack of other items from her shopping trip and shatter into dozens of pieces.

A burst of oddly scented air struck her, smelling of hot desert and vanilla and other pleasant things she couldn’t place. For a moment she was dizzier than ever and actually staggered a step or two as the room whirled around her. Chirping, Eyn jumped onto her arm and scurried to her shoulder, rubbing his head against her chin.

“I’m fine but that piece of old glass isn’t. Twenty credits, totally wasted. When will I learn not to give in to impulses? Maeve,” she said, addressing the Ship’s AI, “Can you have a robo clean this up? I’m running late today.”

“Of course, although if decontamination is required there will be a small charge to your account.”

“Fine, although I don’t think there’s any issue with a chemical spill. There was nothing but air inside.” She sat Eyn on top of his shell, stepped carefully around the mess and rushed into the bathroom. It’d be worth a credit or two not to have to start her day cleaning up a mess.

VS: So Raelyn thinks it’s a mere minor problem of a mess and a few lost credits but….many more events will unfold…there’ll be one or two more excerpts from this book but then I’ll have a new release and we’ll move on. You can get the story in the Pets in Space 6 anthology now though!

The book blurb:

Raelyn Cantorini, senior stewardess on the interstellar cruise ship Nebula Zephyr thinks the alien artifact she bought on the last planet the ship visited was just a pretty glass orb…until her pet Eyn knocked the ornament off a table, shattering it and sending her into an infinitely repeating time loop.

Stuck reliving the same day over and over, Raelyn has only hours to try to save the ship and everyone on board from dying in a terrible catastrophe. As she tries to solve the mystery of what happens to the ship right before midnight each time the day repeats, Raelyn meets Kev Stevens, the former Special Forces soldier turned actor and finds herself falling in love with him. Each time the day repeats, she learns more about him while he has no memory of her. Can she persuade him they’ve met before? Will he trust her enough to help stop the Nebula Zephyr’s destruction?

And if they do save the ship, will that reset time for Raelyn?

The excerpt from close to the book’s beginning, where we met Dr. Saffia Mandell at a colony social event. I’m skipping ahead. She’s decided to walk home from the gathering:

A groundcar slid up beside her, powerful engine thrumming as it idled, and Saffia startled as the window slid aside. Adrenaline rising, she tried to think where she’d bolt to if the driver had less than neighborly motives for accosting her. She might be able to lose a pursuer in the underbrush and trees off to her right but she was afraid she’d get lost as well.

“Didn’t anyone warn you not to go hiking alone at night?”

The voice belonged to Micah, the ranger and the next moment she saw his concerned face in the light from the car’s instrument panel. He leaned across the seat to stare at her, eyebrows raised, “It’s not safe.”

“The colony has a low crime rate,” she said, hating to sound defensive over what she understood too late wasn’t a wise choice. She’d been regretting not asking any of her acquaintances for a ride home for the last fifteen minutes. “No one said anything to me otherwise.”

VS: The rest of the excerpt:

He laughed and the door swung open. “The wildlife wouldn’t consider it a crime to dine on a wandering human, trust me. Get in, doctor, and I’ll drop you off at your place, safe and sound.”

Saffia studied the undergrowth, terrified she’d see something looking back at her. The dark night suddenly seemed even more menacing and every sound full of deadly import. “Wildlife?” Hating the telltale squeak of fear in her voice, she slid into the passenger seat, grateful for the warmth of the vehicle’s cabin.

Micah extended his hand. “I’m Chief Ranger Navonn. I’ve seen you around but we haven’t been introduced.”

colony under siegeThe blurb: Newly graduated from a prestigious interstellar medical school, Dr. Saffia Mandell has been assigned to the Haven Two colony on the galaxy’s outer rim as the only doctor for some 2000 human residents. She’s counting the days until her five years there is up, trying to adjust to rural living after life in the crowded Inner Sectors and fighting her attraction to Chief Ranger Micah Navonn. She’s dreading the upcoming tourist season when the rich and pampered will descend on the planet for the scenic wonders and novel sports opportunities and no doubt inundate her little clinic but the colony depends on the seasonal income to survive.

As the senior official for his people, the Calinurra, the indigenous inhabitants of Haven Two, Micah enforces the treaty, regulates the tourist permits, patrols the forests and resists his fascination with Dr. Mandell. He never expected to be involved with a human woman and doesn’t want to believe in the concept of a fated mate. He wants to keep his life simple and isn’t ready for any long term commitment. Besides Saffia keeps proclaiming she’ll be leaving when her appointment is up in four and a half years so why should he risk his heart?

Then a ship arrives unexpectedly carrying a very ill little girl and soon the deadly virus is spreading through Haven Two. The colony authorities are desperate to cover up the problem to preserve the all-important tourist season and Saffia and Micah have to work together to battle the outbreak, the local administration and their undeniable feelings for each other.

Can the colony survive? And will Micah and Saffia be able to move past their fears about entanglements to act on the mutual attraction?

The excerpt from close to the book’s beginning, where we meet Dr. Saffia Mandell at a colony social event:

It seemed as if the entire colony was here tonight, including the children, who ran around excitedly, playing games and generally being supervised loosely by everyone and no one. She knew all two thousand people couldn’t possibly squeeze into the confined area but most of the acquaintances she’d made in her first six months on the planet were indeed here.

She was trying to decide if she wanted to wade into the crowd to reach the food stand and order fried fish battered with crumbs and a side of crispy tubers with spicy dipping sauce. Her stomach growled, audible to her even over the tune and she rose to her feet. Might as well have her dinner here and then wander home. I put in my appearance as the Colony Administrator not so subtly suggested I do, paid my credits for admittance to support the local charity, showed I’m trying to be a good neighbor…and no one is going to notice if I leave, not in this crowd.

Large social gatherings weren’t her comfort zone. She preferred the quiet and control of the clinic, where she was undeniably in charge and didn’t have to make more than token chitchat. No need for her to open herself up to questions, well intentioned or not. She was going to do her five years here, pay off the med school loans thanks to the Sectors government and then be on her way without a glance in the rearview scanners.

And a little more after the ten sentences…

Inner Sectors underprivileged neighborhood medicine was her goal, had been all her life since she escaped one of the slums herself on a charity grant to higher education.

Not ministering to hardy colonists living on an outer rim world, making their living surrounded by the beauties of Haven Two, living in relatively well-to-do circumstances.

If you haven’t read any of my Badari Warriors series: Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens.

The excerpt, continuing on from where I stopped last week. Mandy is venturing deeper into the lab complex, to check on a person she’s seen on the security console vidscreen, trapped in a medlab.  The man is now lying on an antigrav litter and it’s time to get out of there.

Mandy was energized now, grabbing a blanket from a nearby counter and throwing it over him, tucking the edges in securely. She took a second blanket and placed the rectangular piece of gray fabric at his feet, thinking it might come in handy outside, when the sun went down. Hastily, she took his boots and clothes off the stool where she’d parked them and placed them between his legs on the litter. She was dubious about how much more the litter could carry, guessing his immense bulk was probably straining the generators as it was.

Now she was ready to leave the lab. Escorting the litter to the door, she had to struggle a bit to open the panels wide enough and then bracing them open with a pole laid across the opening. The power to the doors was off now, which sent a shiver down her spine and she was glad these could be opened manually.  Drawing her pulse gun, because anxiety was creating all kinds of tremors in her gut, she checked both directions before guiding the litter into the corridor and setting off in the direction she’d come. As she went, she began to notice flickering lights and darkened panels. It seemed the building was shutting down in places. The cleaning robo had gone silent and she hurried past it. She kept expecting to run into someone—a human, a Khagrish—and a few of the doors she’d passed were now open which she could have sworn were closed before or vice versa.

landonThe blurb: When unexpected circumstances give her a chance to escape from an alien scientist’s lab after she’s been tortured, Mandy Rennegar knew she should run for the hills with the other prisoners. There’s one more special captive who hasn’t been freed, however, and she decides to risk everything to help him. Mandy’s not leaving anyone behind.

Captured by the enemy on a scouting trip, Landon of the Badari has been pushed beyond his limits of sanity and strength by the Khagrish experiments and waits to die…until the human woman sets him free and takes him into the wilderness with her on a desperate trek to freedom. If he could only regain his memory, he’s sure there’s a sanctuary on the planet where his people could help them both.

As Mandy and Landon flee the pursuing Khagrish new challenges arise, including secrets from the past which could destroy the growing attraction between them. Difficult choices have to be made, putting Mandy’s life at risk and Landon discovers the Khagrish have left a lasting mark on his mind.

Will they reach the Badari sanctuary in time? Can their love survive Mandy’s revelations? Will the Alpha of the Badari give them a chance to be together or will he allow her to die when Landon risks everything to save his fated mate?

Her odd state of calm or disassociation or whatever it was her brain was doing to allow her to keep functioning in this charnel house threatened to crack wide open. Whimpering, she leaned on the wall and counted her breaths to regain control.

Regaining her willpower to continue, she forced herself to open the next door, although more slowly, and was pleased to see antigrav litters stacked against the wall. Grabbing the first one plugged into a charging station, she dragged it into the main lab and studied the controls, eventually figuring out how to activate it. The litter hummed and rose into the air on its cushion of antigrav impulses. She steered the device to the table where the man lay, “I wonder how much weight these things can handle?” Hands on her hips, she assessed her unconscious companion.  And how I’m going to move you onto the litter.

Mandy drank another container of nutrient fluids, becoming more energetic and clear headed by the minute, although her body ached from the aftereffects of the experiment on her a few days ago. Chewing the edge of an already ragged nail, she debated whether to go to the storerooms she’d passed and pack herself a backpack with supplies, as well as finding clothes to fit her. Ought she to do those errands before she tried moving the man?

VS: And a bit more to finish the sequence:

But she’d never be able to force herself to return to the depths of the building once she left the area. Her horror was increasing by the passing minute and she was desperate to be out of the death trap. “All right then, we’ll do the foraging together, on our way out the door.” Standing beside the table, she studied the man’s face, observing he seemed to be breathing more easily, so perhaps the drugs were leaving his system. What kind of experiment had the Khagrish had been running on him?

With a shaky laugh she got off the stool and went to explore the cabinets and drawers, not sure what she was searching for, although she did find what had to be his clothes, with a jacket and boots, all thrown together in a deep drawer at random so she fished those out. For sure nothing else was going to fit him, if he ever woke up. She studied the cabinets full of chemicals, injects and other medical items, all neatly labelled in Khagrish. So much gibberish to her eyes,  “I bet the antidote to whatever they gave you is in here but I have no idea what to look for.”

Continuing on, she placed his clothes in a jumbled pile on the stool and checked his pulse, mostly to make sure he was still alive, not having any idea what a normal count would be for a person of his species. His skin was warm but he didn’t act feverish. Mandy stared helplessly around the lab, frustrated. She wasn’t going to leave him but unless he was awake and co-operating, there was no way she could transport him to the dubious safety of the outdoors.

“Transport—that’s it., She remembered she’d been taken back to the humans’ cell on an antigrav litter and she’d seen others moved the same way.

VS: End of the ten sentences but here’s the rest of the excerpt:

Surely if the Khagrish brought him here to experiment on they’d have had some method of moving him. In her time of observing them, she’d noted how lazy the techs especially were about manual labor. Feeling hopeful, she approached the doors on the other side of the room and opened the first one. Instead of the equipment she sought, there was a dead Khagrish, curled up on the floor in the midst of ominous stains and she slammed the panel shut, trembling.

The excerpt, continuing on from where I stopped last week. Mandy is venturing deeper into the lab complex, to check on a person she’s seen on the security console vidscreen, trapped in a medlab.  I’m skipping over some of the details of the medical setup. He’s unconscious and restrained, with machines delivering nutrients and drugs. She’s now removed the sensors and other tubes.

Pausing for a moment, she shook his shoulder gently, which was like moving a rock and made no impression on him, “Can you hear me? I’m trying to help here.”

With determination she kept her panic at bay. If she let herself think too far ahead, the pending anxiety attack would cascade and neither of them would be functional. I can do this, one step at a time. Her next challenge was to get the cruel metal binders open. Pulling out one of her nutrient drinks, she sipped slowly and studied the table, trying to remember the procedure when she’d been held down for the grisly experiment the Khagrish conducted on her. The details were blurry and she was wary of remembering too much, but she did recall where the controls were located on the side of the table and managed to open the man’s restraints on her second try. Expectantly she watched him, hoping for a response, but he lay as motionless as ever.

She touched his wrist, where he wore a neurocontroller, “I’ll have to get this off at some point. I wish I’d kept the removal device handy. We’ll get the bracelet off before we go out the front door, I promise.”

VS: That’s the ten sentences for Weekend Writing Warriors but here’s the rest of the excerpt below:

Mandy dragged a lab stool away from a nearby desk and sat close to the table. She ate a ration bar and studied her oblivious companion. “I wish you’d wake up because I have no idea how to get you out of here and we are not staying.”

The lab was giving her the creeps. Any small sound made her flinch and she was acutely conscious of all the dead Khagrish in the building. She knew she couldn’t force herself to remain here for the night, even if she barricaded the door and slept with the gun in her hand. She’d reached her limit. “Hell, right now I want to run screaming out the damn door as it is.” And am I crazy for talking to myself? Maybe I can pretend I’m talking to him.

He didn’t open his eyes and seemed to be unconscious as she circled the table, deciding how to approach this set of problems. The first order of business was clearly to turn off the inputs, especially the stuff she was sure was a drug. She hoped it was the latter keeping him sedated.

Mandy leaned against the table and closed her eyes as vertigo hit her, “I’m not a nurse or a doctor—what do I know about this kind of thing? I could do more harm than good to this poor man.”

Of course no one answered her. And he couldn’t be left here to die. As a fellow sentient and a prisoner of the Khagrish, she owed him her best effort.

The sensors were growing agitated, beeping and blinking.

“No one’s coming,” she said to them, shaking her head.

She heard scrabbling sounds ahead…

She peeked past the corner and found a cleaning robo whirring impotently stuck in a corner. With a laugh at her fears, Mandy put the gun away and hastened through to the next area. She was having flashbacks of the day the guards had brought her here for the experiments and bit her lip until she tasted blood as she forced herself to keep walking, going more and more slowly. There was a person in need of her help up ahead and she couldn’t turn tail and run.

When she got to the medlab annex, one door was ajar, so she entered cautiously, ready for anything. The room was dimly lit but as she crossed the threshold the lights came up, revealing the prisoner she’d come so far to rescue.

Mandy stared in disbelief, clinging to the door as she was dizzy from dehydration.

The man was humanoid but clearly not human, judging by his immense size. His chest rose and fell slightly, showing he was alive so Mandy moved closer, astonished. He had to stand seven feet tall in his bare feet and was so big she figured he must weigh over three hundred pounds.

Where did the Khagrish find this guy?

VS: And how is she going to rescue him?
