If you haven’t read any of my Badari Warriors series: Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens. 

The excerpt, continuing on from where I stopped last week. On the building’s security vidscreen Mandy has seen a person strapped to a table in the medlab:

Sinking into the chair, she rolled the cool water bottle over her forehead and sighed. She’d have to go investigate or she’d never forgive herself, even if there was a high risk the Khagrish would show up. What if it had been her, restrained in the medlab? She could not leave someone else in those circumstances. Taking a deep breath, Mandy forced herself to approach the dead guard, who’d fallen between the console desk and the wall and died there, curled up. The weapons had already been looted so she double-checked the building floor plan at the side of his desk, ignoring the flashing red lights she assumed were dying calls for help from Khagrishi in their rooms or offices, now days old. Those callers were long past any help. The medlabs were in the wing opposite the cells, so she set out, wondering how much longer the automated systems and the power would continue to operate.

Passing through the main portion of the complex, she saw signs of hasty looting everywhere and at one point stopped to check out what was obviously a storeroom, where she grabbed ration bars and nutrient drinks and stuffed her pockets. The other humans had left a wealth of food and gear behind but she understood how driven they were by fears of the Khagrish rescue party arriving. She was too but she was realistic about her own physical weakness. Besides, she had a mission. Leave no one behind sounded damn good to her, worth running a risk.

The excerpt, continuing on from where I stopped last week where Mandy was asking a group of fellow prisoners to delay their departure so she could get her strength back:

He was shaking his head, exchanging grim looks with the others, “No can do. Unless they’re all dead all over the planet, the bastards will send someone to check on this lab, see why it went silent. We’re not going to be here when the reinforcements arrive, not taking the chance. I like my odds out there, in the forest a hell of a lot better, especially armed with this,” He tapped his finger on the pulse gun at his hip, “All right then, I wish you well, but we’re leaving.”

He stepped over the threshold, broke into a trot and moved east, the others filing past Mandy silently, not meeting her eyes, she noticed, and set out after their leader. She watched them go, sipping her water and savoring the liquid sliding down her parched throat.

“I suppose he’s right, I ought not to linger either,” she said out loud, wanting to hear a voice, even her own. Resolutely she pivoted and strode to the guard console. The vids were active and she scanned them, checking to see if anyone else was still imprisoned or if there were any Khagrish alive. The feeds flickered past fairly rapidly before repeating their cycle and she was on the third viewing before she could verify what she thought she’d seen—a person strapped to a table in the medlab.

Five more humans emerged from the core of the building, armed with Khagrish stunners and pulse guns and wearing bits and pieces of Khagrish uniforms, including boots. Each was carrying a makeshift backpack, which she supposed were filled with survival bars and nutrient drinks.

The man in the lead paused beside Mandy.  Rojair, a colonist, as she remembered hazily as he said, “Thanks for getting us out. Where are all the others?”

She pointed to the door, “Running.”

“Listen, you’re welcome to come with us but we got no time to carry you,” He tried to tug her outside, “If you can walk, you can come. I don’t like leaving people behind.”

“What’s the rush?” she asked, twisting her arm in a frantic effort to get free, “My head is still spinning. I haven’t recovered from the stuff the scientist did to me in the medlab a few days ago. But they’re all dead here, right? Can’t you—can’t you stay here tonight, let me get my strength back and then—”

VS: But this guy isn’t our hero….

The excerpt, continuing on from where I stopped last week where Mandy asked another woman “What did you see?”:

“They’re all dead and it ain’t pretty,” She yanked hard, tearing the fabric from Mandy’s fingers, “Lots of people panicked and ran away. Couple of the guys are organizing the group, grabbing what we can carry and we’re heading for the hills. You have to be able to walk though. Better hurry up,” And then the woman was gone, running away as fast as she could travel, feet flying and arms pumping.

“Wait,” but Mandy’s voice was thin and clearly the other human believed she’d done her good deed and didn’t look back. She drank the water slowly, in little sips and began to feel stronger so she stood shakily; waiting for the spots in front of her eyes to clear up, and followed the corridor out of the cell block. She didn’t see any other prisoners trapped but she did pass several deceased Khagrish. Covering her nose and mouth, she moved faster, into the main building, where there were more dead bodies. She walked unimpeded to the front portal, which stood wide open and stared toward the horizon. She could make out a group of people moving fast, rushing away from the complex and knew she could never catch them.

A sound from behind had her spinning around, pulse racing.

VS: Now what?!

This is a re-release of the 42,000+ word novel I included in the Pets in Space® 4 anthology, which is no longer available. No revisions or additions have been made to the original novel for this re-release but I have also now included a 4,000 word prequel story Butterfly Hair, in which the interstellar diva Azlaya arrives on board the Nebula Zephyr cruise liner. This short story was a free reader magnet originally available only in the time before the anthology was published.

Juli Shaeffer, the Nebula Zephyr’s cruise director, receives a mysterious bequest from the estate of a longtime passenger – a lump of rock taken from a reef on the planet Tahumaroa. Legend states anyone who steals from the ocean gods will be cursed. The passenger’s will requests the rock be returned to the beach so his heirs won’t be affected by the bad luck he believed he’d incurred. Juli doesn’t believe in superstitions and she agrees to carry out this small favor on the ship’s next stop at the planet in question.

Until the rock disappears from her office…When the rock disappears and reappears in various locations around the ship, and seems connected to a steadily escalating series of mishaps, Juli turns to Third Officer Steve Aureli as the only one she feels she can trust. Along with Steve and his elderly Aunt Dian – a passenger aboard the Nebula Zephyr for this cruise – she investigates the strange series of malfunctions plaguing the interstellar luxury liner. Steve and Juli enlist his Aunt Dian’s dog, Charrli, a retired Sectors Z Corps canine, to help them track the missing rock as it moves about the ship.

Juli and Steve must find the rock, hang onto it and transport it to the planet’s surface, before the alien idol’s curse turns deadly. The attraction between the two of them grows as the threat to Juli becomes more and more focused. Can she carry out her task while he keeps her safe from the alien curse? Will the capricious alien idol bring them good fortune…or disaster?

She had no idea who had saved her—the others were running down the corridor toward the main building and the exit to the outdoors. Mandy knelt by the lab tech who was now clearly dead, grabbed her ID card, whispered, “Thank you,” and then moved along the hall.

The cell a few doors in the other direction also held a few people and she fumbled with the controls while the desperate occupants screamed at her, begging and imploring her to let them out. “I’m trying to remember the sequence,” she said, rubbing her forehead where a headache pounded, “Please just shut up.” Closing her eyes she struggled to recreate what symbols the tech had touched and then she entered the short sequence of taps on the colored keys.  The barrier made the same nasty buzz and flickered completely out of existence.

Mandy was bowled over as the prisoners pushed their way out.

She sat down, being dizzy and not thinking clearly. How long she sat, she had no idea but then someone was shaking her.

She opened her eyes with much effort, to see a woman who’d been in her cell, thrusting a water bottle at her, “Here, take this and drink slowly. It’s every person for him or herself but I figured I owed you.” Her reluctant benefactor rose to leave and Mandy grabbed the leg of her jumpsuit.

“What’s going on? What did you see?”

The Khagrishi teetered back and forth as she slowly extended her right hand toward the controls on the exterior of the cell and pushed one button after the other in a slow motion effort, mouthing the symbols with cracked lips as she touched the corresponding part of the pad.

Holding her breath, Mandy was only a few inches away from the tech now, separated by the shimmering force barrier, “So far so good, open the cell and take me to the lab with you.” The faint cognizance she’d seen in the woman’s eyes before was gone and she stared at Mandy as if not really seeing her at all. The next breath rattled horribly in the tech’s chest and she fell forward.

As she did so, her hand pushed against the long orange button at the bottom of the console. There was a harsh buzz and the force barrier retracted about half way, leaving an opening.

In utter disbelief, Mandy stood frozen for a moment.

Her fellow prisoners didn’t hesitate, surging forward with oaths and cries, shoving and pushing to get out the opening. Several fell, sprawling in either the cell or the corridor and people trampled over them before they crawled or were dragged away from the open space.

“Come on!” A frantic man grabbed Mandy’s sleeve and pulled her toward the opening, “The barrier might reactivate any second.”

She was the last person out of the cell.

The scuffling sounds of the Khagrishi’s faltering steps came closer, audible over the faint buzz of the force barrier. There was a thump and Mandy’s eyes flew open, to see the tech crumpled on the floor outside the cell, “Oh, no, no, no!” Her voice rose with each syllable and she reached out instinctively to the fallen tech, “You have to help us.” She wanted to cry but her eyes were too dry.

The alien woman convulsed and her eyes flew open, staring directly at Mandy, who held her breath. A faint glimmer of intelligence shone deep in the feverish eyes but then the other fell into coughing, rolling onto her back and lying limp.

Mandy sensed her fellow prisoners coming toward her. She turned her head, “Stay back,” she said in a low hiss, making feeble hand gestures, “Let me handle this.” Focusing on the tech again, she leaned forward toward the dangerous barrier. Making her voice calm, encouraging even, she said, “Is it time for the experiments? Did the scientist send you to collect me? I’ve been waiting right here the way the guards told me to.”

The tech coughed again, rolled over and grabbed at the wall. “Time. Tests,” she muttered in Basic. She clawed her way to her feet, Mandy rising slowly inch by inch with her as if to lend the woman strength.

If you haven’t read any of my Badari Warriors series: Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens. 

The excerpt – from the opening of the book, continuing on from where I stopped last week:

A scraping sound echoed down the corridor. Mandy shook her head. Great now I’m having hallucinations.

The sound came again and she heard a protracted cough. She pulled herself to her knees, trying to see more of the hall, “Please, is anyone there? Can you let us out? We’re dying in here!”

Silence.

More coughing, which sounded as if the person was hacking up their lungs.

Shuffling footsteps.

VS: That’s 10 sentences but here’s the rest of the snippet (since you’ve been waiting so long to see any hope for Mandy and her fellow prisoners):

“Lords of Space, there’s someone out there,” she whispered. Mandy glanced into the rear of the cell, where her fellow humans were lying in their cots or sitting at the table and decided not to arouse hopes which might be false. Please, please, please let this be real. Raising her voice, she yelled again. “Hello? Who’s out there? Will you help us?”

A Khagrish lab tech staggered into view, literally holding herself up by clutching at the wall. Her green coat was stained and she was barefoot. Her pink hair was lank and hanging to her shoulders, framing a shockingly pale face where her eyes burned like coals, sunken into her head. Mandy held her breath. This woman had been in the lab when she was taken for bizarre surgical tests, done without anesthesia and then reversed after the scientists made their notes and Mandy screamed and screamed.

Surely this Khagrishi wouldn’t use her dying breath to help the humans. Was she here to taunt them? Or worse?

But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens. 

A group of human prisoners is in dire straits after the aliens who kidnapped them stopped patrollig the cells and there’s no food or water. Could all the Khagrish have died? Could the guards, technicians and scientists have just decided to walk away from the whole place, leaving their human captives? This snippet is from the POV of  Mandy, the Female Main Character.

THE EXCERPT:

The aliens were certainly despicable enough to commit such an act but the fact the guards had been ill argued for the first scenario.

Either way, we’re doomed.

Numb inside, with increasingly confused thoughts, Mandy shuffled perilously close to the barrier, craning her neck and trying to see the end of the corridor, where Peter on the night shift swore he’d seen a body but she couldn’t see anything. Maybe he was having hallucinations. No one was exactly in their right mind here in the cell—captivity in the Khagrish lab system seriously messed with a person’s reality. Dizzy, she slid down the wall and sat. She was supposed to be yelling but she doubted anything would make a difference. Her throat was parched anyway.

They were all going to die, a miserable, painful death.

Yesterday the prisoners tried to either short circuit the force barrier or draw the Khagrish to respond, hurling chairs and pieces of the beds at the glittering energy field, but to no effect. She could count the days because the lights went on and off as normal, signaling the day and the night, which she guessed meant the automated systems still functioned. Too bad the Khagrish hadn’t cared to automate any failsafes for their prisoners’ survival in case of disaster.

No guards had come to check on the prisoners in three days.

Seven days ago, the situation had been normal, as far as anything was normal for a human captive inside a Khagrish lab.

Six days ago one guard had been coughing but the three daily meals of mush and moldy bread showed up on time and two humans were taken away in the mid-afternoon for an experiment. The prisoners never returned.

Five days ago only two guards made the rounds instead of three and one of those Khagrish had been pale and coughing. Three meals were delivered, one late.

Four days ago there was only the morning meal provided, brought by one guard and the robos. There was no bread.

And then…nothing.

Two days ago the water stopped running in the cell’s sinks and bathroom.

Today people were dehydrated, desperate and terrified of dying.

All the scraps of food were long gone.

Mandy Rennegar staggered to the front of the cell to take her shift as a watcher, ready to scream for help if anyone showed up. The humans had been yelling and pleading for help through the force barrier for days with no response.
