Last snippet from STAR CRUISE: TIME LOOP,  which is in the Pets in Space 6 anthology. Next week I’m switching to my new release KYDEN: BADARI GLADIATORS SERIES BOOK ONE (details below excerpt).

Excerpt: I’ve jumped ahead to the end of the first time Raelyn lives through the day and then the first morning when she awakens:

She was buffeted by a force so powerful she couldn’t stand, couldn’t think, couldn’t breathe—heat enveloped her, light blinded her…and the Nebula Zephyr blew up. There was no time for a final thought…

CHAPTER THREE

Five perfectly modulated crystalline notes, designed to bring the deepest sleeper to consciousness with no disruption…

With a gasp Raelyn sat upright, heart pounding. Hand on her chest where she felt her heart beating way too fast, she took a deep breath and stared wildly around her cabin. Eyn chittered at her from a precarious perch atop the door frame, evidently frightened by her dramatic awakening.

“Oh thank the Lords of Space, I must have been dreaming,” she said, collapsing into her pillows. “What a nightmare!”

Carefully she coaxed Eyn to come sit on her arm, which he did eventually and then she got up to have her morning synthcaff and get ready for the day. As she went past the table she saw her carryall was open and various items were strewn around the surface.

“You’ve been searching for treasures again, haven’t you?” she said to the pet, stroking his head gently. “Sorry, nothing for you this trip.”

Raelyn took one more step and stopped, pivoting to survey the mess on the table again. Where was the glass globe? She pushed aside the various items without finding what she sought and knelt carefully on the deck to search under the table, also to no avail. “I did buy the damn thing, didn’t I? I know I did. Of course in my dream you broke it and I had to pay Maeve to decontaminate because of the weird smelling air inside it.”

Eyn hopped from her shoulder and made a circle on the table where Raelyn had expected the glass ornament to be. He uttered small anxious trills and seemed to be looking for something. Watching the moyed, she got goosebumps but shook them off.

Realizing she was going to be late, Raelyn rose to her feet and proceeded into the bathroom but the issue of the globe bothered her. She was positive she’d paid the vendor twenty credits but where was the damn ornament? Had there been sleight of hand? Or a pickpocket? But why would anyone steal a quaint glass ornament? “Because for sure it wasn’t any Ancient Observer relic,” she told Eyn. “Lucky for you, since you broke it. Well, only in my dream apparently.”

VS: I hate to tell her but this is not a dream or a drill. If you’re curious to know more, the book is avaiable on all major ebook platforms!

The book blurb:

Raelyn Cantorini, senior stewardess on the interstellar cruise ship Nebula Zephyr thinks the alien artifact she bought on the last planet the ship visited was just a pretty glass orb…until her pet Eyn knocked the ornament off a table, shattering it and sending her into an infinitely repeating time loop.

Stuck reliving the same day over and over, Raelyn has only hours to try to save the ship and everyone on board from dying in a terrible catastrophe. As she tries to solve the mystery of what happens to the ship right before midnight each time the day repeats, Raelyn meets Kev Stevens, the former Special Forces soldier turned actor and finds herself falling in love with him. Each time the day repeats, she learns more about him while he has no memory of her. Can she persuade him they’ve met before? Will he trust her enough to help stop the Nebula Zephyr’s destruction?

And if they do save the ship, will that reset time for Raelyn?

KYDEN: BADARI GLADIATORS SERIES BOOK ONE by Veronica Scott

Kyden is the top ranked gladiator in the Five Systems but he’s hardly there by choice. Unscrupulous guards faked his death in the lab where he was created and sold him into slavery in the galaxy’s hinterlands. He has no idea where his home is or how many years have passed since he was condemned to a life of endless combat. Kill or be killed is the rule and a Badari never gives up. He’ll fight to stay alive until the Badari goddess sees fit to decree his death.

Elara Vasclavian is the daughter of a senator, as far removed from the life of a gladiator as a noblewoman can be until through the machinations of a political enemy, she ends up in terrible jeopardy. Abducted and given to a group of drunken gladiators for their amusement the night before the games, Elara vows to put up a fight but there’s no real hope of saving herself. Until Kyden steps in, responding to the goddess’s commandment to protect those who are smaller and weaker. And discovers she’s his fated mate.

Rescued, Elara returns to her life of privilege but she can’t forget the man who saved her life. The gulf between their places in the Five Systems is unbridgeable, no matter how much Kyden longs for even a glimpse of her in the arena audience. No matter how much she feels the pull to be by his side. As matters stand, they cannot be together…Or can they?

KYDEN is the first book in a new series, spun off from my ongoing Badari Warriors series. Kyden is a Generation Five Badari whereas the main characters in the long running series are from a later time and are Generation Eight. This new series stands alone and you don’t have to have read any of the other books to enjoy this one. I couldn’t resist the temptation to tell a few other Badari stories, set in the galaxy’s Hinterlands, and who can resist gladiators?

The Alien Turtle Is Naughty Snippet from STAR CRUISE TIME LOOP “Groundhog Day in Space”

Eyn the alien turtle (or moyed)

May be edited a bit from published version.

From  STAR CRUISE: TIME LOOP, my “Groundhog Day in space story)

Excerpt: From the beginning of the novella.  Raelyn and her pet are back on the ship, with the odd glass bauble that may or may not be an ancient alien artifact. Her alarm wakes her…

Five perfectly modulated crystalline notes, designed to bring the deepest sleeper to consciousness with no disruption…

In the morning, Raelyn ignored the gentle chimes from the Ship’s Artificial Intelligence even though she’d selected the sound of the alarm specifically. In a futile effort to deny reality she tried to stay in bed. Her head ached from overindulging a bit at the crew party the night before. She asked the Ship for headclear and once the inject popped up on the bedside table, promptly took the full dosage. As the ache in her temples stopped pounding, and her thinking became clearer, she took a look at the time and swore.

“Damn it, I’m going to be late.”

Rising to her feet, she was a bit dizzy but headed for the bathroom. As she went she noticed her carryall was open and various items were strewn around the table. “You’ve been busy and naughty,” she said to Eyn, clucking her tongue. The moyed loved glittering objects and was known to haul small things away to secret caches.

Eyn was standing with his front paws on the odd glass bubble she’d bought on impulse at the end of the trip. He was staring fixedly into the misty center and his tongue flickered in and out as if he was trying to taste the captured air inside. Disconcerted by how intent her pet was, Raelyn reached for him. “You’ve seen your reflection before for star’s sake. Be careful or you’ll push it off—”

VS: So what do we think will happen next?

NOTE: The turtle was a tribute to my brother, who has always had pet turtles and who does turtle rescues where he lives today.

This is a lightly edited rerelease of my novella from the Pets in Space 6 anthology. No new material has been added.

We Meet the Alien Turtle STAR CRUISE TIME LOOP Snippet

Eyn – the alien turtle

VS: From STAR CRUISE TIME LOOP (“GROUNDHOG DAY in space…”)

Excerpt: From the beginning of the novella – an alien glass orb has caught our Female Main Character’s eye while on shore leave:

Stressed, Raelyn wanted to set the orb down and walk away but found the idea of relinquishing the item was more than she could deal with. “All right, you win.” She found another ten credit token and placed them both on the table. Ignoring the profuse thanks from the vendor, she tucked the expensive impulse item in her carryall and sprinted to the shuttle. Her friends pulled her aboard as the large groundcar began to move and she heaved a sigh of relief as she fell into a seat.

This is not the week to come to the captain’s attention in a negative way.

Back in her small cabin aboard the luxury cruise liner, in orbit far above the planet, Raelyn craved a shower more than anything. The weather on Mabann Two had gone from balmy to humid and hot in a few hours while she was there. She could examine her purchases later, after dinner maybe. Stripping out of her casual clothes, she paused at the side table next to the bed and extended her arm. “All right, Eyn, we’re home.”

The red-and-purple spotted bracelet around her wrist twitched and uncurled, becoming a moyed from her home planet, blinking at her sleepily from three eyes for a moment before leaping from her wrist to the large, ornate shell which was its home.

Pets weren’t allowed on the ship ordinarily, although exceptions were made, but Eyn was more than that, being a symbol of Raelyn’s clan and emblematic of the deity to which her tribe prayed. The goddess she worshipped was believed to use the moyeds to transmit messages and to observe the human activities, and the oldest folktales said the planet itself was carried on the back of a giant moyed.

She’d had Eyn since she was a girl, acquiring the creature in a special ritual which she barely remembered anymore. The cruise line for which she worked was accommodating to crew members’ special needs and it pleased Raelyn to have a companion from home. She’d roamed the Sectors as a stewardess for the CLC Line and loved her travels but Eyn was a nice tie to her place of origin and her family.

The Ship’s chief hydroponic officer allowed her to raise a special variety of insects for Eyn to eat in a small enclosure on Deck Nine.

Now, the little creature scooted into its shell and snapped the front flap shut.

With a chuckle, Raelyn took herself into the bathroom and a relaxing shower.

I’ve switched to my upcoming new release STAR CRUISE: TIME LOOP,  which is in the Pets in Space 6 anthology, releasing October 5th.

Excerpt: From the beginning of the novella, continuing on from last week when a glass bauble at a vendor’s stall caught Raelyn’s eye:

She was surprised to feel warmth against her palm rather than the cool surface of a glass object but it had been in the sun. Gazing into the orb, she saw what looked like iridescent mist floating. Everything about the object was pleasing and she thought maybe she’d keep it for herself. “Ten credits,” she said.

A passerby in a hurry jogged her elbow and she nearly dropped the glass knickknack. Juggling it, she managed to avoid the disaster.

The seller hissed between jagged, discolored teeth. “Careful, honored visitor. Bad things will happen if the orb shatters.”

“I’d have to pay you for nothing, you mean,” she said in good humor. Digging in her purse, she came up with a ten credit token. This planet dealt in metal money, which was a charming throwback and a bit inconvenient.

“Twenty.”

Oh no, now she wants to bargain. Frustrated at being drawn into the negotiation she’d hoped to avoid, Raelyn ground her teeth, loathing the idea of leaving a unique find behind.

“Hey, Cantorini, we’re leaving.” The shouted admonition came from one of the Nebula Zephyr’s other stewards. He stood beside the ground shuttle, holding the door and gesturing to her urgently. “The captain said not to be late getting back to the ship, remember?”

‘Eyn’ – the alien turtle

Taking excerpts now from my new release, TRATUS, a scifi romance novel.

I’ve jumped ahead to where we meet Katrin, who is a prisoner of the Khagrish scientists along with many other humans. She trying not to be noticed by the enemy or by the three handsome alien soldiers. Drawing attention is never a good idea in the labs. The ‘third man’ is of course TRATUS but she doesn’t know him yet.

Now the Khagrish and the men were inside the cell, walking slowly along the line of women. The alien leader passed her by without a second glance, which left her with an odd sense of relief.  The way he held himself made her think of a dangerous predator and she caught a whiff of what smelled like a high priced alcoholic feelgood as he walked along.

Could he be drunk this early in the day? What in the seven hells is going on here?

The leader indicated a woman and then another. The Khagrish guards dragged them out of line and bound their hands behind their backs. Now the man was making his second trip along the line, rubbing his chin and making remarks to Dr. Sheyall in Khagrish, which Katrin didn’t understand..

The third man stopped in front of her and she raised her head to stare into his eyes, which glowed slightly golden.

“I’m sorry,” he said in Basic, so quietly she could hardly hear it.

Next thing she knew he’d taken her by the arm and pulled her away from the other prisoners, holding her close to his side.

TRATUS: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL (SECTORS NEW ALLIES SERIES BOOK 14) by Veronica Scott

Katrin Rodgerr, ex-Space Navy, was perfectly happy as Third Officer on a tramp freighter in the Outer Sectors, until the day she and everyone on board the ship were kidnapped by alien scientists to become subjects of gruesome experiments. Far away from home or help, Katrin does her best to bolster the other prisoners’ morale and look for a way to escape.

Until one day she’s chosen for an experiment of another sort – given to a pack of alien supersoldiers as a prospective breeder.

Tratus, senior enforcer of the Tzibir pack, never expected to find his mate, much less to meet her among the human prison population of the labs. But there she is and there’s no denying the instincts. Despite his Alpha’s objections, Tratus manages to convince the alien scientists to give Katrin to him and he vows to protect her. Deeply unhappy with the way his leader runs the pack as he disobeys all their goddess’s commandments and refuses to ally with other Badari packs to fight the scientists who created them, Tratus plots a revolt.

Despite herself Katrin is drawn to the giant humanoid warrior with alien predator DNA who treats her so respectfully. His scales and other differences from human males only make him more attractive in his own way. But the Alpha distrusts her and Tratus, and time is running out for them both…Can Tratus defeat the Alpha leading his pack to inevitable doom? Can he and Katrin survive the consequences and find their way to claiming each other as true mates or must he let her go?

Taking excerpts now from my new release, TRATUS, a scifi romance novel.

I’ve jumped ahead to where we meet Katrin, who is a prisoner of the Khagrish scientists along with many other humans.

There was a rumor among the various prisoner populations about a group of people who’d escaped the Khagrish labs and returned on occasion to save others. Some of the rebels were said to be large aliens, which three of the men standing outside her cell certainly were. She herself had seen equipment in several medlabs sized to fit humanoids much taller and heavier than humans, which gave credence to the story but Katrin assumed if the escapees came to break humans out, they’d launch a military style attack, not stroll in on good terms with the Khagrish.

The trio were easily seven feet tall, frames filled out with massive muscles and the handsomest faces she’d ever seen outside of a trideo. As the soldiers moved and the lights in the corridor shone on their bodies, she saw the faint glimmer of scales on their cheeks and forearms. Her attention was repeatedly drawn to one in particular, standing behind the other two. Something about him drew her eye, until she realized he was looking at her and then she swallowed hard and hastily studied the scuffed floor as if the answers she sought were written there.

Best not to draw any attention in the lab, if possible. She’d had the lesson drummed into her head by others who’d been held much longer than she had.

They Lie Snippet from TRATUS Badari Warriors SciFi Romance

May be edited a bit from published version.

…from TRATUS, a scifi romance novel.

From the beginning of the novel. I’ve jumped ahead a bit and now they’re in Dr. Ghazhing’s ( the head scientist) conference room, waiting to begin their meeting. Briator is the Alpha of the pack, to whom Tratus reports.

“Gentlemen, meet Commander Martinggleer, newly arrived from Home World,” Ghazhing said as the officer gave Briator a curt nod and sat down without invitation. “He’ll soon put this small problem of your escaped comrades to rest, I’m sure.”

Briator lolled in his chair, apparently unconcerned. “I don’t care what happens to them as long as you honor the agreements with my pack. We were the chosen DNA line after all.” His words were a bit slurred but he held himself well. The new security chief assessed Briator with an expressionless face and squared his shoulders as if readying himself for a fight.

A battle the Badari would win, even if the Alpha was drunk. Tratus knew they could easily take everyone in this room but fighting their way out of the entire complex was dubious. He habitually made and discarded contingency plans constantly while he was inside the Khagrish walls, just in case. Cerodan, the other enforcer did the same.

“I’m afraid I have bad news,” Ghazhing began. “Three of your men didn’t survive the last field exercise. Killed in combat by the enemy. We were unable to retrieve the bodies.”

They lie. The words crept into Tratus’s head, along a tight beam from Welner, one of the other pack soldiers who’d been sent on the same combat mission. Every word he’ll speak is a lie. Nothing happened as they say. Ondre was executed by the Khagrish, on Ghazhing’s orders. Ragle and Hagiro died trying to defend him. Briator requested the elimination of the other Alpha. Don’t trust the Khagrish or Briator.

Tratus feared his knees would give out from the weight of the shock. With a tremendous effort he kept his outwardly calm demeanor. This was a true disaster, not only because of the death of pack brothers, but because Ondre, the dead Alpha was the man he’d sworn to follow if he defeated Briator in a confrontation which was to have occurred when Ondre came back from this mission.

Taking excerpts now from my new release, TRATUS, a scifi romance novel.

From the beginning of the novel, continuing on directly from last week:

Tratus rubbed his chest, where the pack bond tying him to all his pack brothers ached. He tried to reach out along the link to discover what was wrong but could only detect two of the five men he was expecting to sense. Despite being a highly dominant enforcer, he was too far away geographically to link to the men left behind at their new settlement but he should have been able to connect to the squad of five they were here to pick up after a deployment.

He lectured himself as he walked behind Briator and Ghazhing. Now wasn’t the time to let his mind wander. A Badari needed all his wits about him when dealing with the Khagrish. Briator was half drunk already on his day’s ration of human feelgoods and liable to agree to anything Dr. Ghazhing wanted from this meeting, to ensure the supply of his intoxicants was uninterrupted. With a suppressed sigh, Tratus paid more attention to the discussion.

“Yes, the home world sent us a replacement security chief,” Ghazhing was saying. “Knows his place, knows how to work with scientific authority in the proper style.”

By which he means, knows how to be a yes man to the scientists, Tratus thought. Which thankfully will make him less effective.

Taking excerpts now from my new release, TRATUS, a scifi romance novel.

From the beginning of the novel:

Tratus always questioned his own sanity when he voluntarily walked into a Khagrish lab complex. Of course he was following Briator, the Alpha of his Tzibir pack and therefore really had no choice. The Alpha’s decrees were not to be challenged and Briator had gambled the lives of his entire pack on the alliance he’d made with the alien scientists who created them.

Watching his Alpha greet Dr. Ghazhing, the Chief Scientist, like an old friend, turned his stomach but Tratus was good at maintaining a stoic expression and giving away nothing of his true feelings. How could Briator disregard the years of experiments, torture and death the Tzibir had been subjected to, along with the other two Badari packs, to make common cause with the Khagrish now?

Not for the first time, Tratus wished they’d made an alliance with Jill Garrison the day she freed them from the original lab. Life would be very different.  Briator had assumed the human and her mate Aydarr would fail in their rebellion and quickly be recaptured so he refused to ally with them. Instead of proving him right, the other Badari were doing a creditable job of destroying labs, freeing human prisoners and remaining out of the reach of the Khagrish. All of which added up to victory in Tratus’s mind. Those other Badari were free…and he was still tethered to their masters.

May be edited a bit from published version.

The snippet – the POV of Senebkai, the heroine’s 9 year old brother. He’s just taken his oath to Pharaoh and now General Marnamaret re-enters the situation.

…the man who stepped forward was young like Pharaoh. With a cheerful face, the skin around his eyes crinkled as he smiled. He was tall and walked with the carriage of a warrior. He rested his fist on the golden falcon badge over his heart. “What is your command, Great One?”

“I assign this new soldier to you. Go with him now to his home and see the mother and sister are properly cared for.” Pharaoh leaned closer to Marnamaret and murmured, his voice carrying only as far as Senebkai’s keen ears. “There must be more to this story. Find out if this was a miscarriage of ma’at and justice under the Usurper. He mentioned her role in his father’s death and their family’s problems. I expect a report.”

Marnamaret saluted. “With pleasure, sir.”

Pharaoh turned to Senebkai. “I’ll see you again, no doubt. Go with my general. He will oversee your education and training, and will set your future assignments once your family issues have been resolved.”

Senebkai stepped aside, General Marnamaret drawing him out of Pharaoh’s path with a gentle tug on the sleeve.

Nat-re-Akhte rose. As the assemblage bowed, he walked away, exiting through the private door at the rear of the dais

Marnamaret and Senebkai regarded each other silently for a moment. The general held out his hand. “Allow me to be the first to congratulate you on your enlistment.”

VS Note: I’ll do another one or two snippets from this book but I’ll be releasing my next scifi romance TRATUS soon so then we’ll change books.

The book blurb: 1550 BCE – Forced by a vengeful Pharaoh to flee for her life and hide in the poorest section of Thebes, Lady Pebatma has scraped and struggled to support her ailing mother and young brother for the past two years. Now, out of funds with the rent to pay and no possessions left to sell, she begs the goddess Hathor for help. With a new pharaoh taking the throne, surely something can be done…

A powerful general in command of the army and best friend to Pharaoh, Marnamaret has everything a nobleman in Egypt could desire…except for true love. He refuses to settle for less. On a whim, he prays to Hathor to send him the woman of his dreams. Will the goddess answer these heartfelt petitions? And if she does, will Shai the god of Fate allow the course of two lives to be changed by love? For none can deny Fate….

Author’s Note: This is a connected series. Heiress of the Nile can be read as a standalone. Although it’s my newest novel, the story falls between Priestess and Warrior timewise and is set in the early days of this Pharaoh’s reign.
