Sharing excerpts from JAMOKAN: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL.

The excerpt – I’ve skipped ahead a tiny bit. Rosemari is still gathering her wits after awakening in Jamokan’s tent and demanding to be allowed to go outside:

She shook her head, annoyed at herself for having a scatterbrained mind and thoughts skittering like demented butterflies right now. Stepping from the tent into the bright sunlight, she blinked and took in the majestic beauty of a mountain forest all around the campsite. The sky was a gorgeous blue and she heard birds singing. Relief was powerful force running through her .“There, by the fire, please. I want to enjoy the sunshine. Being free is so wonderful.”

As she moved slowly toward the blazing fire, leaning on his strong arm, Rosemari tried not to feel self-conscious as the many men moving about the area stared at her, pausing in whatever they were doing as she passed. Until suddenly the group was all busy again and pointedly not looking at her.

“I could tell you weren’t comfortable with all the attention,” Jamokan said. “The soldiers are happy you survived. It’s hard on everyone when we neutralize a lab and aren’t able to rescue anyone so the entire pack is invested in your well bring.”

Did he give them a command telepathically? The others had obviously responded abruptly to something. Rosemari felt adrift, not knowing anything about her rescuers. They seemed to know a lot about humans. “Are there others of my kind here?”

JAMOKAN: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL (SECTORS NEW ALLIES SERIES BOOK 13)

The story: Badari Alpha Jamokan and his pack are growing discontented in the sanctuary valley, tired of coming in second place to the pushy new South Seas pack when it comes to assignments and everything else. On top of the discord within his pack, Jamokan is distracted by the search for the right woman to be a proper Alpha’s mate to partner with him in combat and in everyday life. Even the Badari goddess is warning him in visions that he and his pack are on the wrong path for a happy future. In desperation, he receives permission to take his entire pack north to the mountains for a two week hunting expedition, where he hopes to use the time and rugged surroundings to settle the soldiers down and restore order and discipline.

And figure out his own future.

When his men unexpectedly locate a hidden Khagrish lab, he goes to investigate and see if there are humans to be rescued. Little does he suspect he’ll be called upon to break one of the highest commandments of the Badari packs and bring a new disaster to those who look to him for leadership.

Before she became a Khagrish prisoner, Rosemari Parcher was a hydroponics technician on a gritty colony world, who unexpectedly won a planetwide contest. Tapped to receive her heart’s desire and move to a totally different life in the luxurious Inner Sectors, her life had become a happy dream. Kidnapped in space by enemy aliens and given to the Khagrish, she and other humans are the unwilling subjects of a bizarre medical experiment where a quick death seems to be her only hope. Rescued by Jamokan and his pack, she finds herself deeply attracted to the Alpha but the devious Khagrish aren’t through with Rosemari or the experiment.

Sharing excerpts from my new release, JAMOKAN: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL.

The excerpt skips ahead from last week. Rosemari has dreamed once again and now she’s waking up:

She was lying on a pallet of some kind, apparently in a tent and the man seated beside her was clearly not human, but oh so handsome. His face was set in lines of concern, eyes narrowed as he watched her.

“Your eyes are glowing.” Which was a nonsensical thing to remark upon but the warmth of his gaze was reassuring, comforting in some undefinable fashion. Without thinking she raised her hand to touch his cheek briefly, drawn in by the golden aura.  Overcome by anxiety about what had happened to her and who this person was, Rosemari struggled to sit up. Vertigo rolled through her and she dreaded being ill in front of this man. Throwing up on the person who rescued you isn’t a great way to express gratitude.

“Thank the goddess you’re awake,” he said in Basic. “Don’t be afraid, you’re safe. We rescued you from the Khagrish lab.” He supported her with a strong arm behind her back and a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Don’t overdo things yet,” he said. “Would you like some tea? Maybe a slice of bread or a cup of broth? We’re not set up to do intravenous life support but I’ve been able to get you to sip water and nutrition drinks over the last few hours.”

“And you are who?” Head tilted, she eyed him, unnerved to find he was the person behind the face she’d sketched in her dream. Reality and fantasy were mixing entirely too much for her liking right now. She needed all her wits about her to navigate whatever was going on.

She Decided to Stay Weekend Writing Warriors

Sharing excerpts from my new release, JAMOKAN: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL. I’ve introduced the heroine. The goddess told Jamokan previously that the woman is a prisoner of the Khagrish.

The excerpt, continuing on from last week, in Rosemari’s dream as she’s unconscious during an experiment conducted by the alien scientists. I skipped ahead slightly:

The new arrival had taken the place where Rosemari had been sitting on the massive boulder and was now examining the sketch pad.

Annoyance made Rosemari walk faster. She didn’t like to share her drawings before they were complete and done to her exacting standards.

“Ah, so you decided to stay,” said the woman, whose face she couldn’t see for some odd reason.

It’s a dreamthere’s no logic in a dream. Poised to run if she had even the slightest sense of the Khagrish activity beginning again, or indeed if she seemed close to regaining consciousness, Rosemari stopped a few feet away from the rock. “That’s mine, if you don’t mind.”

Her new companion laughed and a somewhat befuddled Rosemari realized the notebook was in her hand now without having any memory of taking it from the lady. A picture of a man had appeared on the page, obviously drawn by her in her unique style, although she was sure she’d never seen him before. A strong, handsome face, staring boldly out from the page, eyes narrowed slightly as if assessing whoever he was looking at. Not quite human but charismatic. Someone she’d like to know better.

“You’re not at all what he thinks he’s expecting,” the puzzling visitor said. “Sometimes the outcomes in these situations surprise even me.”

VS Note: A recurring theme in the book is that Jamokan had certain expectations for an Alpha’s mate and no one, including him or Rosemari thinks she’s what he expected. But is she what he needs? We’ll have a few more snippets from this book but then I have to move on or get spoiler-y.

The excerpt, continuing on from last week, in Rosemari’s dream:

Several more girls waved goodbye and disappeared into the soft gray mist now beginning to drift from the forest, obscuring part of the meadow and dimming the sun a bit. Alarmed, Rosemari set her drawing aside and slipped from the boulder, realizing she was barefoot as she landed in the soft grass and ran after the last two women remaining.

“Wait, please stay. Things will get better soon—I know they will,” she called out. “We have to hold on and have hope. Someone will come, you’ll see.”

The pair, neither of whom she knew, paused and one spoke harshly over her shoulder to Rosemari. “Don’t kid yourself, no one is coming to rescue us. There’s no hope on this cursed planet. Leave while you can, before the experiment gets worse. Come with us.” She reached out a hand and instinctively Rosemari took a step toward her. The idea of being left completely alone was terrifying.

There was a sound of soft singing, in a language she didn’t recognize, echoing from across the glade and Rosemari turned, to see a woman entering from the fringe of trees in the distance. Another victim of the Khagrish? Will there be more?  “We can’t leave her alone,” she said to her companions but received no answer. Pivoting on her heel and nearly falling in the process, Rosemari saw them walking into the forest without a backward glance.

VS: Our heroine is about to have her own encounter with the Badari goddess. Of course she doesn’t know that yet…and has never heard of the Badari…

The excerpt:

She knew she was dreaming but Rosemari preferred the peaceful false reality to what was actually going on. Sketching pad in hand, she sat on a giant boulder in the middle of a beautiful glade.  The battered notebook where she loved to draw was a familiar, reassuring  note in the world currently gone mad and bleak.

She smoothed the old fashioned paper with her hand, admiring the strokes she’d made so far on this new work of art. Disquieting thoughts flitted through her mind. Where did I get this? When the Khagrish released me from stasis I had nothing but my clothes, which the lab techs then took. Shaking her head, she banished the intrusion of reality. Ah well, the joy of a dream.

The sun was shining, flowers were blooming, birds were singing…and best of all there was no sign of the cruel alien scientists who’d kidnapped her and so many other people. She had company in the meadow, the nine other women who’d been selected for this phase of the experiment.

Inspired by their presence, she allowed her pencil to fly over the blank page. She didn’t have much time to capture the faces of her companions. Already three of the women were strolling toward the shade of the giant trees bordering the space on all sides. Arm in arm, they were leaving.

Right, three died from the first procedure…

The excerpt:  Jamokan wakes up.

With a groan, holding his aching head, Jamokan opened his eyes and sat up. He stared at the messy camp, his soldiers sprawled everywhere, worn out after their night of celebration. Ronan and Yonn were brewing Badari tea, none the worse for the wear. Darik was building up the fire, the silver alien Artificial Intelligence unit MARL12 at his side, floating in midair as usual. Jamokan wasn’t surprised these three individuals revived first. Two alpha-borns and a mated man rising in the combined pack hierarchy. Three Badari doing what the goddess desired them all to do, evidently—applying their will and discipline to an improved future, the one Aydarr was trying to build.

Regretfully he heaved himself off the cold ground, knowing this was the last time he’d be care free. The goddess made it clear there was no true vacation from the new life and its demands on him and on his men. No matter what was required of him, he was determined to avert the future where he and his pack devolved into wilderness hermits and the canid DNA Badari died out. How could he call himself their Alpha and do anything less?

What Will Have Changed Snippet from JAMOKAN SciFi Romance

Excerpt from JAMOKAN: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL, which can be read as a standalone.  Jamokan received permission from the Supreme Alpha to take his pack on a hunting expedition in the far northern mountains. Once there, during the night of the three full moons, he and the pack celebrated. Now it’s the next morning and Jamokan falls asleep, only to have a vision of the Badari goddess. She’s giving him a hard time. “Where do you see yourself in ten years?” she asked:

“What will have changed for you?” She didn’t wait for an answer. “The pack takes its lead and signals from the Alpha. Yet you wonder why your men rarely find mates, why the others outside your pack rise in dominance, why you are so often left to guard the valley. You aren’t a simple commander of soldiers merely struggling to stay alive any more, Jamokan. Raise your sights.” Then she shrugged. “Or don’t. The choice is yours. Life holds many possibilities, yet the doors close eventually. I tell you this—in many of the possible futures Aydarr will give you the mountains you crave so much to rule but you run the risk of devolving into a group of disconnected individuals, hermits howling at the moons, rather than growing into a new destiny. Few indeed are the futures where you manage to meet my expectations and hopes.”

Her voice was cold, flat, the warning clear. A tremor ran through Jamokan’s frame and he locked his knees against the force of her clear displeasure.

“Life has purpose beyond simply surviving the lash of the Khagrish but perhaps not for your pack. Creating a vibrant community, ensuring the opportunities for future generations. Leaving a worthy legacy. These take work, dedication, attention to details.  Pursue the wrong path too long and your kind die out.”

She rose and Jamokan had only seconds remaining to throw himself on her mercy. The most important matter pounded in his head, pushing aside her grim prediction of possible futures. “I’ll ponder your words, my lady. But what of the woman? My—my mate?”

The Great Mother paused, even as the mists swirled in more closely between them. “We’ll see how well you listened.”

And she was gone.

Sharing excerpts from my new release, JAMOKAN: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL. I’ve jumped ahead in time from last week. Once there, during the night of the three full moons, he and the pack celebrated. Now it’s the next morning and Jamokan falls asleep, only to have a vision of the Badari goddess. She shows him a woman who could be his mate and says she’s near death.

“Tell me where she is and I’ll go to her immediately, wherever the Khagrish have her held prisoner.” He was on his feet without conscious thought, heart pounding in his chest at the ominous news.

The Great Mother seemed unimpressed, not sharing his urgency. “But do you deserve her? Are you Alpha enough to claim and be claimed, to truly love? To set an example for your pack? Are you what they need now?”

Confused, he was finding it hard to breathe under the merciless assault of her questions. “I—I don’t understand, my lady. I have been open to mating, tried to identify the right woman—”

The goddess leaned forward and shook a finger at him, although he was unable to bring her face into focus no matter how he blinked and strained his eyes. “Not for the right reasons! A mate isn’t a tool to elevate yourself in the dominance hierarchy. I give my Badari the blessing of potential mates to have partners to work toward the future together, to build something lasting and true. To be a foundation for the new life. Aydarr has the vision. Daegan has the vision. You want to take your pack out and run. To enjoy the moment and carouse, when you aren’t fighting the enemy.”

Since he couldn’t deny her accusation about why he’d decided to search for a woman to mate, Jamokan focused on the last comment she made in her scornful tone. “It’s an Alpha’s task to look out for his pack, to make sure the men are healthy and well trained, ready for combat or anything else which may arise. I’m doing my duty as best I know how, my lady, and we—all of us—needed to feed the predator in our souls, to allow our beasts to run, especially under the three moons. We feel our connection to the beast differently than the cats do.”

“Where do you see yourself and your pack in ten years?” she asked after a brief, charged silence. “What will have changed for you?”

Sharing excerpts from my new release, JAMOKAN: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL. I’ve jumped ahead in time from last week. Jamokan received permission from the Supreme Alpha to take his pack on a hunting expedition in the far northern mountains. Once there, during the night of the three full moons, he and the pack celebrate:

It was one of the best nights of his life. Even better than their first night as free men outside the lab. Able to run tonight and savor the sights and smells of the ancient forest, no cares or worries, Jamokan allowed the energy from the three moons to course through his body and push him to new levels of exhilaration. He was drunk on moonlight, he freely admitted and threw back his head to howl a challenge to the entire damn planet. He plunged into an icy lake he came across and then emerged dripping wet to run again and give voice to his wild emotions. The predator entwined in his complicated DNA was more than halfway in charge and he thought briefly of Kierce, who could transform into the alien predator in his DNA—a huge ‘tiger’. Tonight was probably the closest he’d ever come to knowing how Kierce felt when he actually was the beast.

At times Jamokan believed he saw a shadow pacing with him, the reflection of the great canine from which some of his attributes had come, courtesy of the Khagrish perverted ‘science’. He relished being across the line tonight, immersed in his predator self. He’d welcome the dawn and a return to manhood because the Badari prided themselves on not being the mere animals their creators named them, but for now the sheer power he commanded was too intoxicating to relinquish.

As the moons finally began to descend, leaving the sky one by one, he made his way to their camp, where he found most of the pack either there already, or just straggling in.

Yonn brought out his drum and beat a rhythm that got into a man’s blood as the moons’ rays had done and Jamokan danced around the camp fire with his soldiers, the whole group singing songs the ancestral memory served up, melodies their long ago ancestors must have chanted after a hunt or a battle.  The words came to mind easily tonight, as if the men were all suddenly healers with their extra gifts. He wouldn’t remember a word of the defiant glorious lyrics in the morning sun but for now he was as unified with his humanoid ancestors as he’d been linked to his alien predator previously. Eventually he fell to the ground from sheer exhaustion, the last in the pack to collapse, which was fitting since he was their Alpha.

VS Note: All well and good but Jamokan’s about to receive a sharp reminder of his responsibilities….tune in next week as they used to say…

JAMOKAN: A BADARI WARRIORS SCIFI ROMANCE NOVEL (SECTORS NEW ALLIES SERIES BOOK 13)

Badari Alpha Jamokan and his pack are growing discontented in the sanctuary valley, tired of coming in second place to the pushy new South Seas pack when it comes to assignments and everything else.

I’ve skipped ahead a bit. Jamokan wants to take his pack out of the sanctuary valley to spend time away from all the other Badari. (There are three packs in the valley and Aydarr is the Supreme Alpha over all Badari.):

“I need to pull my pack together and take the men out of this damn valley for a bit. The pack bond is… fraying.” Jamokan searched for the right words. “Not to the point where it would ever break of course.” A flare of dominance prickled through his nerve endings at the mere idea of his pack dissolving. “I wouldn’t permit a rupture. I can hold a pack together. But maybe it’s our special canid mix of DNA—we need to run as a pack. Just us. Take a breather from all this forced togetherness in the valley and undertake a task or mission on our own.”

“I think the Khagrish unfortunately had a few grains of sense built into their so-called science,” Aydarr said, unperturbed. “I think all three of our packs needed time loose in the Preserve which we were given between experiments. To be ourselves, as much as we could be under the circumstances. To not interact with the other two packs for an extended period. What kind of sortie do you have in mind?”

Jamokan had come prepared. “I understand the kitchen is running low on protein stocks, since we increased the human population with the last group of people we rescued. I was thinking the pack and I could go up north, to where the giant horned faleker roam, and do a few weeks of serious hunting. My enforcers and I could design simulated maneuvers to run as well, sharpen everyone’s senses. I have to think through the details, once I know for sure where we’re going.” He tilted his head ever so slightly, knowing he needed to signal his willingness to accept Aydarr’s decision. The other Alpha’s strength pushed against his own and of course Aydarr would win. Jamokan always had to be mindful to steer clear of confrontation with the man, which chafed. In the old days, in captivity, he and Aydarr squared off fairly often. “Assuming you give permission.”
